How to Figure out Oxidation Numbers

How to assign oxidation numbers to the atoms in a molecule.
1. Elements have oxidation number = 0
2. Hydrogen's always +1 (except in "hydrides")
3. Oxygen's always -2 (except in "peroxides")
4. Other atoms get the charge they prefer, as long as the sum of oxidation numbers for all atoms = the total charge on the atom.

@Tclack
@Tclack 9 жыл бұрын
Lydia Myers It's not usually a matter of looking at the periodic table. It's more of a common rule of thumb given in chemistry textbooks: The 5 rules: -F is -1 -O is -2 -H is usually +1, but it's -1 if bonded to a more electronegative atom (electronegativity of H is between that of B and C, so the elements to the right of C are more ectronegative) -The sum of the oxidation numbers of the atoms in an ion will add up to the charge of the ion -the sum of the oxidation numbers of the atoms in a neutral molecule will add up to 0 Since these elements are commonly found, we can easily assign these oxidation numbers then figure out the rest.
@joshm3779
@joshm3779 9 жыл бұрын
+Lydia Myers The periodic table is organized into ionic charges for the main-group elements: 1A is +1, IIA is +2, IIIA I +3, IVA is 0, VA is -3, VIA is -2, VIIA is -1, and VIIIA is 0.
@Tclack
@Tclack 9 жыл бұрын
Josh Moeller That doesn't help. If it were true, we should "know" that N will always have a -3 charge.... But that's not true. Just look at the Nitrogen in ammonia, where we know the formal charge is 0.

There are chemicals called "hydrides" where hydrogen is bonded to a metal: NaH, LiH, RbH... The electronegativity of H is HIGHER than it is for these metals, so it gets the "-1" oxidation state and the metal gets the "+1" oxidation state. This is RARE.

Ha. That's one of the "rare" ones I talked about. If it's H2O2, Li2O2, Na2O2 (first column) or you're explicitly told it's a "peroxide", then O gets -1 by default. It's just another way oxygen can be bonded and it gets a different oxidation state.
