A 'How To" on the GoPro cameras I use to film our garden birds. Concentrating on 2 birdbaths, I experiment with different setups and capture the action in close up. GoPro4 Silver & GoPro7 Black cameras were used.
During lockdown, I've turned into a wildlife photographer and will likely now, continue with my new found discipline for quite some time. Of course, I'm still shooting with my Fuji cameras and telephoto lenses to capture the birds and there will be more videos to come featuring these too.

I go to the park and find a picnic table. Throw out a small amount of birdseed and put my GoPro Hero 5 Black about a foot away from the birdseed. Go to a different picnic table or to my truck and activate the GoPro with the GoPro-branded Remote Control. Thanks for your video. Always nice to see how others do it.

Nigel, just found your channel and subbed. Can you recommend a camera for film that i can also get stills from. Looking at starting a new hobby for the visitors to my patch. Total novice this end. I do have gopro 3's which i use for fishing on a kayak but looking at something bigger (handycam size) i can mount on a tripod and use remotely.
@NigelHarperPhoto
@NigelHarperPhoto 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for subbing! Hmmmmm! There are so many cameras out there and a lot of it depends on how much you want to spend. But mirrorless cameras are probably your best such as Fuji (which I use) Panasonic Lumix (I also have an old G7) Sony etc. There are also numerous bridge cameras with long ranging zoom lenses built in and most cameras now shoot 4k video too. Also many models can be remotely operated via an Ap on your phone. So, probably best to Google and see which model best suits your needs. Cheers!

I use a trail camera with a macro lens for close ups. The quality is not as good as a iPhone 14 pro max but its acceptable. 512gb, 12v 12amp lithium battery and only recording when triggered means I can leave it for three months undisturbed.
@NigelHarperPhoto

You must have a good quality trail cam and it's certainly a great way to capture wildlife. I have a relatively cheap trail cam which after a couple of years is no longer recording? Do you have your captures on KZfaq? It would be interesting to see them! Cheers👍

What a great video, thank you. But boy do you make it look easy! I’m an RN by trade, now a stay-at-home-mum with my two little boys. We are always learning about birds, feeding them, and logging what we see. My father happens to have a GoPro and we want to get a family project going by recording and posting to KZfaq. It’s a little intimidating. Have you done a “for beginners”series?
@NigelHarperPhoto
@NigelHarperPhoto 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Katie, Thanks for your kind comments! I suppose the photography side for me is relatively easy as I've been a professional for many years (people) not birds as my main subject. Anyway, photography aside, bird behaviour goes a long way to getting results and I'm very much an amateur as far as that goes! As I say in my video, persistence eventually pays off and placing a GoPro either near or in a bird bath will get results eventually. I haven't done a beginners guide, but if you watch through again there is a lot of technical info there on setting up cameras and exposure etc. To upload to KZfaq, you need to obviously to set up a channel, it's very easy (there's lots of vids on how to do this) and once you have some video, edit it in whatever computer software you have - Actually, you're right, as this is going to be a very long reply! Maybe I should show the process from capture to presentation on KZfaq. Anyway, I hope some of my ramblings are useful and good luck with your project Cheers!

I've found and watched this video - I would like to do similar. Question: Do you simply let the video run, ie. huge video files, and then patiently scan through them all the videos looking for results? Many thanks...
@NigelHarperPhoto
@NigelHarperPhoto Жыл бұрын
Hi, Basically yes! The GoPro runs for about an hour, so I go out retrieve a card, replace the card and battery and leave it running whilst scrolling through the footage on the computer. The video clips are in several 4GB segments. So, don't skim through too quickly as it's easy to miss something. Anything captured is then edited, backed up and the card deleted ready for more filming. So, extra cards and batteries make this a lot easier. Cheers and good luck!👍

Any object detection software to help with reviewing all that video?
@NigelHarperPhoto
@NigelHarperPhoto 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Robert, Not that I no of! However, as I mentioned I don't actually download any footage unless I've captured something of interest. So just skim through the footage on the desktop! The GoPro 7 splits the (approx 1-1.5 hour clips) into 12 minute clips. So yes, it's laborious, but really only takes a minute or so for each clip. Auto detection software (I'll have to Google it) would save time if reliable? Skim too quickly though and it's easy to miss something. Anyway, I'll probably be trying new things this Spring. Cheers!

thank you very, very much! How to to get and save the little footage at a time that you do get?
@NigelHarperPhoto
@NigelHarperPhoto 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment! I skim through the footage captured and only download the sections I need. Then using Quicktime Player I edit the clips and save to a folder. Once named and numbered (using bridge in Photoshop) I archive onto several drives. Once safely backed up I delete the memory card and continue. Fortunately storage is cheap these days, but it soon mounts up! Hope that helps? Cheers!

@@bryanhouse6811 The cameras I use for close ups are GoPro 7 and GoPro 4. There are later versions of these cameras now. However, any action camera will do as long as it's of good quality! You will need at least 2 batteries and a charger. It's all down to how much you want to spend! Cheers!
