Amazing video, Zach! I started composing about 2 and a half years ago with the DAW Studio One and improvising on the piano since the beginning of my twenties. Now I'm 29 and I want to level up my composing skills (I just subscribed to the platform Scoreclub, if you're familiar with it, to learn more and to be able to grasp the traditional concepts and classical notation)... I really want to be able to have my pieces be played by real orchestras and I want to inspire and uplift people with my music, but to reach an audience I need to transcribe what I'm doing in the Daw to classical notation, which is a challenge... And like you say, the feeling of not being ready or good enough is very deep... I've always felt this overwhelming imposter syndrom, so networking is super-difficult... Most people in the past, even friends, always indirectly tried to talk me out of the artistic path, but I just can't help but paint, write, make music and share my creativity! This video is very timely for me, I will try my best to get out of my comfort zone. Thank you for sharing your authentic voice! 🙏 Much love, Michael

Zach, honestly your story about playing for your class is one of the most profound stories of understanding the power of your gift I have heard. Gave me chills man. Thank you for all that you do. Though I have a different career I’m very happy with, I have always been passionate about writing and playing music and want to expand into film scores (my favorite genre) purely for enjoyment. Looking forward to diving into your Orchestral Mockup Fundamentals course.

I'm an aspiring film-maker and composer, so I have a bit more on my plate. Your videos and stories are better at inspiring me than most others, so good job. Unfortunately, I can't use any of my software right now (long story), so I may have found you at the wrong time. But I'll keep you updated for no reason whatsoever :)

My music has always been super personal to me which is why I've been scared to share it for so long. It's like a private journal. I've eventually started putting myself out there in the music business more and it's done wonders for my confidence. I've also grown to LOVE creating music with other musicians and creators. The people are what make music fun for me :) (also if anybody ever wants to create some music together, hit me up. I'm always looking for new music friends)

Thanks for the video Zach. My main issue is that I have zero confidence in my compositional ability. I know how to compose. I know I do. But I have no confidence in the final product for anything that I do. All my projects, no matter how proud I may be of having finished them, sound to me like garbage or like they're total amateur work which isn't representative of how much I know or what I know I should be able to do given my background in Recording Arts and Music Production. I compare my work to that of others all the time. And having social anxiety and general anxiety disorder don't help much. Lol.

It's super common - I definitely recommend connecting with a community so you can get other ears on your work. We often have the most bias towards being critical of our work just because we've spent the most time on it. I'll probably make a video on this!

If your goal is to make music that other people love, you just have to put it out there. Then you'll know the truth. Most likely people will love it and you will get more confident making music. It's a win for all 😊

My full time job as an international successful muralist is still ' holding me back' to achieve the same as a composer. BUT... that is completely as planned. Such as everything is. Set goals. Achieve goals. Dot it, did it. Done. Next. ♥

I believe that my music currently sounds like the video games that I like, and the people I know who play these types of games say it’s great. However, the truth is that it has been impossible for me to find jobs of that kind. Thanks for the tips!!

I'm very introverted and it's hard to work with other people. Recently I joined a patreon group of a music producer I admired and it was the best decision ever. I get feedback from other music makers, which has lead me to realize I am actually pretty good and I'm slowly less judgemental towards myself. Major confidence boosts. I've been so excited it's hard to sleep sometimes 😂

Unfortunately I do still compare myself to others. Recently I've been doing better due to much more encouragement and compliments, but It's been a thing I've felt for a couple of years now. I'm always inspired when I come across a composition I love, but there's always that thought in the back of my head just doubting that I could ever reach a point like that. This prevents me from learning new things, even if I want to. Although the support helps a lot, I still feel this way

I totally get it - try listening to music of yours from when you were just getting started. If you feel like you've made even the TINIEST bit of improvement since then, you know you're heading in the right direction. It's just a matter of time 🙂

@@ZachHeyde That's a very good point. I definitely have improved, but I seem to completely ignore my past music and just focus on the things I can't currently do. I think i'd have to change my mindset, but that's easier said than done haha

Honestly to this day, it's a bit sad and very generic to say, but i mostly lack of money 😅. I'm confident in my skills as a composer, but i still need to pay my bills. Which i do, with my work as a sound engineer, but i don't really have time to build up myself a reputation as a composer and find serious and paid project. I'm "old", and i don't have the confort to wait for making confortable money, like when i was student as a sound engineer. So yeah i don't know, i guess maybe it will take just more time for me, i just hope i don't "miss" something...
@ZachHeyde
@ZachHeyde 28 күн бұрын
Definitely takes time, but I'm not a believer in "grindset" or all-nighters to get there! I wonder if you've got any connections through your work as a sound engineer worth tapping into?

Mine is lack of confidence and in wrong place 😅 I'm a drummer and was a full time musician in my country. Then I moved here in Canada 4 years ago and my music life just ended. It's so frustrating. I just started composing last year in June and went into music production school. Total newb in piano. I most rely on my ears. Had my first 3-min film rescore a few days ago. I posted it in my channel. I want to do more and I want this to be my profession. Tired of these non-music related jobs. Feels like I'm wasting time in my life.
