Scotty Kilmer hi Scotty I have a question about my car I have a Nissan Altima 2014 and the other day I was driving it it just shut off the battery light went on the engine light went on they diagnosed it as a cam shift sensor they replaced it in the problem was still going on so I was wondering if you had any ideas of what it possibly could be

Scotty Kilmer Hey Scotty, big fan. I'm having this issue and wanted to see if you had an idea of what may be the problem. So I have a 2007 Chevy Trailblazer with 190000 miles. Was driving it nice and smooth until it started to shake and the engine light with the arrow pointing down came on which reduced my power. Also my traction control came on with my regular engine light. I've had a guy take a look at the car and he saying that the car is saying it's a circuit b open which could be anything. When I try to start the car it has a trouble time doing so. I can crank it once and it will start but I have to crack it for already 5-6 second. Please help me

Been watching your vids on how to find a short in break lights checked everything I could I can not find the problem I unhooked the break switch and nothing fuse didn't blow I plugged it back in and fuse blew but it's a new switch what am I missing

if old fuses are blown, and you put in new ones, and they blow immediately, they are shorted out. Then you have to do this video or pay a mechanic to do the testing to find what is shorted beyond the fuse

start by checking the wiring from the battery to the fuse box, and the wires from the fuse box to the devices that don't work to find where power loss occurs. Tedious, but that's electrical work for you.

Love your videos! One time I had a cam sensor go out in my 1996 2500 V10 Dodge Ram and not one mechanic could fix it or find the part anywhere. I looked around at junk yards but no one had it. Finally, a friend named fast Eddie fixed it in a day using a boat part. These other supposed professional mechanics either were inept or just did not want to spend time trying to fix it.

bulbs generally burn out because sockets are corroding and shorting out, or the wires feeding them have shorts and are touching metal on the body, check those first

I bought a "cable tracer" like that last summer from Harbor Freight. It was $32. Way cheaper than the name brand one called "the fox and hound."

Using a lan toner test kit to find shorts in a car is pure genius....I use the same method (with way different equipment) to find shorts on printed circuit boards. Works like a champ.

@@trainman1209 Lan stands for Local Area Network. A toner is basically a quick and dirty way of sorting out wires when connecting Local Area Network's together. You put a signal in on one side, and detect the signal (usually a single frequency tone) on the other end so you can figure out which wire is which. A similar method is also used to detect shorts in PCB's, which was developed by Huntron for use in the US Navy. Scotty is way smarter than you realize. 🤗🤗

I always am upfront with my customers. I tell them what's wrong, what can be replaced vs what can be repaired, and I try to save them money when it's cost effective for them and time effective for myself.

If the alternator is good, and many rebuilt units aren't, then the wiring has a problem. Check the wires going to the alternator for corrosion or loose connections first

@TheWarmplate just find the ground wires, and reground them with a jumper cable from the ground wires to the battery negative terminal, and if they get bright, reground them permanenetly.

things are often shot out of order and edited for consistency. Believe me, this system works fine, better than any I've ever found for this low price.

if you unplug it from the alternator, and you have no shorts then, the alternator is the problem. If you unplug the wiring and the short is still there, it's in the wiring.

Just set to continuity or diode mode and Away you go. the icon is normally at the bottom left on every multimeter I've had. Go vegan

I messed up when installing a rear fuel pump (96 f150 dual front and back gas tank) and crossed the wires so it is running backwards. No fuses blown, front tank still runs fine. When I go to swap the positive wires do I also swap the negative wires? Don't want to blow the fuse, relay, and both pumps. Thanks man! Desperate, don't want to make a $400 mistake.

+Brian Ealy running backwards hurts nothing on a DC motor like that. just make sure positive is on positive pump connector and ground is on ground.

you shorted out something, could be complex, me I'd just cut the power wire to the radio and run it off the ignition switch myself rather than mess with all that crap

The only time throughout the entire video the wire was disconnected, was at 1:47 but that was only because Scotty edited the video at that moment to add in an extra step that he wanted to show. If you have facts then present them, otherwise fake news.

radio and windows are on different fuses, but check em all anyway but more often that's a wiring problem, or bad body control module. Please help!!! My boyfriend has been working on his car so hard, he bought it not knowing it had a blown head gasget, but he fixed all of that, except his car wouldn't start, so he took the battery from my car and tried to start his car with it, but unfortunately he thinks he blew a shortage, (we saw a spark, then the dash wouldn't even light up, like it was before) is there anyway he can find out where the shortage is, is it possible that the whole car is just better off at the junk yard? He is convinced that the car is gone and no way to fix it. I don't want to see his hard work go to waste. Any advice helps! Thanks,

Yeah but it doesn't save time. Finding shorts can be time consuming. That tool he has can save you the time to disconnect connectors and constantly look at a wiring diagram to confirm you're looking at the right pin per connecter.

@Bret3030 tons of things can do that, get it scanned by a dealer level scan tool. Often leaking cheap plastic fuel injectors on those things though.

just replace the headlight relay and pray it's bad. If not, either switch is bad or wiring is shorting out, often in body control modules if it's an American car.

unplug the headlights and see if it still blows. If not, replace the lights. if so, trace the wiring for shorts.

@Fayte34 well, have the test in this video done to find the short. that's what it's for, but it's not easy, since the wiring goes into the fuel pump inside the gas tank. That's chryslers for you, couldn't give me one. From my experience, I would say fuel pump though

swap the fuel injector to another cylinder, pray the miss moves then change the injector,. If not, bad pcm or bad internal engine parts on that cylinder are most common

@supersupra89t generally small leaks in the headlight assembly, then dampness gets in and burns out those bulbs; One drop of water touching them will fry them

I wish I knew about that device! I spent 5 days tracking a short on my Ranger- i would turn key & I could hear fuse blow; sometimes I could start vehicle several times and nothing happened. sometimes it would start, and then blow fuse. mine is a AT, so there is plug that dead ends for clutch, and it had come off plastic holder and rubbed off insulation on a wire..... very frustrating, but I found it myself. excellent video, as usual.

Scotty, this 97 Dodge Dakota 5.2 liter engine, i did the electrical test as in your video, use a test light, remove the fuses one at a time, i found that the power lock system, works with or with out a fuse, my question i have is none of the gauges work on this truck, i believe you told me the BCM is bad, where is it located , an can i uses anyone , from a dakota or durango, I'm trying to fix this truck, it runs Great, please let me know, thank you Scotty, an Happy Holidays, love your videos, I'm young , in my 20's an want to learn this Automotive stuff , like you, thank you again

@brandonb175 watch my video "replacing a distributor in your car" it's the same in all cars. Best to get a timing light though to make final adjustments when done, though you can mark it like in my video and put it back the same way

Thank you for your fast reponse I forgot to mention Replaced the coil wires harness i have bought a new ecu two matching keys and transponder as I thought thats all ot could be now I asume ignition control module is another name for ecu thanks as other people said it cant be that I am waiting for parts to come from ebay i will message back and let you know Happy new year hope 2014 brings you good fortune.

@spelunkerd that's why I buy these tools rather than attempt to make em. this does no harm because the power is regulated by the device internally to not damage anything.
