30+ years ago, I was in the visitor shop in Yellowstone, and a small girl chose the biggest (and the most expensive) agate slice on the display. Her mother was obviously shocked at the price, which showed she was on a tight budget. I persuaded the little girl to have another piece, (much cheaper) that had a crystal ''smile'' in the centre. Many years later, in my 70's, I told this story to my partner, (now gone) and she found and bought another similar piece for me! It still makes me smile, but through my tears!

If it wasn’t the color wouldn’t show it up.. they knew it was agate because they found rock and put water on it revealing it

That’s incredible… and to think from the outside on a regular day it just looks like a random zero-value rock one would smash with an excavator and discard to dig a crappy irrigation ditch… lol

In McDermitt, Nevada you don't need machinery. Multicolored banded agate is on the surface for easy picking. Many parts of adjacent Idaho have agate on the surface too
