How to Find and Catch Crappies when Ice Fishing

Today we are ice fishing for crappies in the Hayward, Wisconsin area. Crappies are probably one of the most targeted fish during the winter months. In this video I talk about the 2 most likely locations to find crappies when ice fishing. Along with the information I talk about jigging cadence and how to work crappies on a sonar! Just wanted to update this review. Year 4, with a bit of sharpening I'm still thrilled with this Auger! This is an excellent Auger. kzfaq.infoUgkxe0I-fnTUByahTCyStrIBXsesSkQJKn8n It splits to 1/2 size for storage in the warm months and easily assembles for winter use. I can cut holes in less than a minute by and really don't feel the need to ever adapt this to use with a drill. It cuts easily with the included blades (which can be sharpened or replaced as needed) and has held up extremely well through last season, and now for the first cuts of this season. I do recommend this to anyone who asks, and personally prefer this over powered augers. These are quiet, still quite fast, lighter, and don't risk spilling chemicals into our waterways. I plan to do a lot of fishing this year through the ice, thanks to this trusty Auger. The 8" diameter is great for fishing pike through the ice as well.

I'm loving your videos man! Alot of great content packed in there. Way better than the channels that never tell you how they're actually catching them. Awesome for new comers to the sport and even experienced fisherman who may have forgotten certain techniques that used to produce full buckets for them.

After watching this video I would have to refer to you as the crappie Whisperer. That was one of the best well explained fishing videos I've ever seen. I love to ice fish for Crappie and I found this very very helpful as I have seen many mistakes that I have made. It was very very helpful to watch the flasher at the same time your rod actions. I was way too aggressive dropping the bait to the bottom passing them bringing it up instead of slowly bringing it to them, and retracting it from them. Thank you so much for taking your time to make this video well done. I'm going to go out and empty the lake of crappies, its time to eat.

One thing I’ve noticed when you’re fishing is when you go to set the hook, you almost drop your rod to give slack and then set the hook...is there a reason for this or at i misjudging?

Do you always give about a ft slack in the line before you set the hook? I notice you drop the rod about 8-12 inches before you set it.

I feel your pain. I worked through this a few times. Ive Emptied my box on basin crappies with no luck. A tungsten bead head jig has bailed me out. 1/16 -1/32 ounce tied sparse with some crystal flash and flashabou. Slowly lowered and Twiched above them did the trick. I tie them for trout and salmon. We can’t use live minnows here in quebec but you can try a small fathead on a jighead and lower it down to them. I have had good luck luck dead sticking just the head of a dead minnow as well, they seem to prefer it over the whole thing sitting there motionless.

They are made in mainland china, I have been ordering them off Alibaba for around $4 a reel. Long shipping time but they are the same piscifun reels

Do you ever waypoint a weed edge or a spot on a spot during the open water season using side imaging and then return there with your Humminbird GPS during the ice season?

Absolutely you should be doing that! You can cover so much more water in a boat before the lake ices over. Those spots are usually really good at early and late ice.

Also look for rock edges and transition areas. Another thing to do is make structure maps of an area that look good.

Hey Tom, what's your opinion on capillaries bursting and killing basin caught fish during the winter? There's a multitude of guys who've shown this in videos and discussed it in seminars including the Infisherman guys. Because of the capillaries bursting, Basin caught fish should always be kept. These guys say They're going to die. What's your thoughts?

You can tell when its happening. Generally I see it most if fish are over 30 down. Best to keep or move on

@@TomBoley Yes, but you can't tell for a few minutes if the capillary rupture around the gills and mouth have occurred. It's probably best to just keep basin caught fish, even in say 25fow rather than release them to die. I believe this is something that needs to be discussed, explained and educate more ice fisherman on by those who have the voice to do so. Your videos are all, some of the best informational and entertaining fishing videos that I've ever seen and I enjoy watching everyone of them. Thank you for Replying.

Pistol Bit on a High speed Drill. Accidentally left it on the highest speed and started it in my kitchen with only socks on. It ping ponged back and forth between my ankles. 1. never use it on a speed higher than 1. 2. Probably wear boots instead of socks.
