Eight strategies I use to find architectural ideas. Do you find the blank page as terrifying as I do? I'm starting a new project and I thought I'd use this video to talk about how I deal with this and precisely how I search for new ideas for my architecture.
I discuss in detail:
- Bisociation
- Trusting the design process
- Embracing constraints
- Inventing deadlines
- Doing the opposite (anti-project)
- Subtracting to solve
- Stealing (like an artist)
These are just a few of the design hacks I use to help grease the creative wheels and instill the confidence I need to keep moving forward. What's great is these techniques work for a whole host of disciplines and creative fields, it isn't exclusive to architecture.

All I feel is lost. I don't know what I'm in uni for. I don't know why I'm studying it. I don't know if I'm whining or if this is hos architecture schools really are. The most my teachers do is critique our models, tell us to read books, and grade what we do. There isn't a class where they've sat and given a demo of how they engage with architecture, do design process, or show us how they personally think and brainstorm when working on a project. It's a blank slate for us to carve into, and we're scrutinized when it isn't imprinted with what they want. I wish I didn't feel so hopeless as to having to consult you every single time I come out of their classes to make sense of what they really want from me. I wish I had a tutor who I could watch and then derive my own formulas of working from. Books just don't cut it for me, I've never learned that way because visual assistance is so important to me. Your channel is so important to me. Thank you.

Hmmmm. This is a clear report that students pay for schooling but are never taught. They are taught by grading them for what they were not taught. I think a lot of the lecturers themselves don't know these things because they may not be practicing. Our first assignment in Architecture school was "Architecture or ArchiTORTURE?, discuss!" What a evil way to start teaching. During my days there was nothing like KZfaq, so I think you should still be very grateful. 20years ago I had to learn the hard way, following practicing Architects and going to site.

Dear Eric, Thank you for taking the time to create these brilliantly curated videos. A lot of your videos address the type of questions and solutions that we or at least I generally might not ask someone else at this point (As it's already assumed that we are supposed to have a proper understanding of all things architecture when we step out of architecture school). I've mostly worked for firms which generally doesn't leave any of the design to juniors. Now that I'm starting out on my own, your guidance and wisdom make me feel empowered to discover architecture in my own terms. I'm sure a lot of us feel the same way. I just wanted to take the time to let you know how many of us deeply appreciate your videos and thoughts. Thanks again :)

I find switching from projects in different phases keeps ideas flowing. Bidding phase on one project can transition nicely to preliminary cost estimate in schematic design of another. Reviewing existing mechanical drawings on a project in early design phase transitioned nicely into answering an RFI about a roof cap detail on one project in construction. Just a couple examples from my Friday. Nice editing work. Thx

Excellent videos. I have always been fascinated by "flow," how humans move through a space and how, as designers, we can control that flow with structure layout, furniture, color and even texture. Texture can draw or repulse, color can create moods which morph into emotions. I truly love design and wish I had continued my studies. I still do all my drafting by hand with simple tools. AutoCAD takes all the fun out of it for me.

I use many different things to inspire my project (books, Pinterest, Houzz, old project, coworkers ...) When it doesn't work anymore or I'm stalling, I put the project aside and work on Something else and comeback later. I've learned that my incubation period for me as to come by itself, I cannot force it to arrive or my design is poor. It's like you've said; laying an egg !

as much as I remind myself that it will come - and it always does - it remains a source of background insecurity/anxiety until I flesh it out...you sound more at ease with the process than I +David Landry...thanks for watching...
