Cash on books is the most underrated of valuation indicators. In this video, we shall learn how to find & filter cash-rich companies whose stocks are available at cheap valuations. While the concept itself is easy to explain, it's important to know when & how these opportunities present themselves and how investors can take advantage of them. For this, I shall take you through 4 different examples -- Mazgaon Dock Shipbuilders, Robinhood, HT Media and Alibaba -- as we look to uncover what I personally call the "loaded wallet theory"
Video Chapters:
00:00 Loaded Wallet Theory
00:47 Example - Mazagaon Dock Shipbuilders
02:30 Cash as a Valuation Tool
05:14 Example - Robinhood Inc
06:25 Value Traps
06:42 Example - HT Media Limited
07:36 Cash Rich Low Valuation Investing Strategies
09:20 Example - Alibaba
10:45 Does Investing in Cash-Rich Companies really work?

One of the first stocks I ever bought subscribed to the loaded wallet theory. I bought HFCL at ₹64 per share when the cash (net of debt) within the company was ₹67. Similar to what I wrote in my diary, if I had enough money .. I would have bought the entire company, delisted it, walked down to the bank and written a cheque in my name. Essentially, I would have made a risk-less profit of ₹3 per share. In all, I have invested in 11 such opportunities at different points in time. 6 have given good returns, 3 turned out to be value traps and 2 remained flat for many years. So, use your knowledge from other videos (ROCE, free cash flow, EV/EBITDA, sales growth etc.) to improve your selection filter. Happy investing to you!

Thank you so much 😀 .. I love making thumbnails. Actually, this entire concept of fitting a message inside a "1.5 inch x 1 inch" box which is a) relevant to the topic, b) shouldn't use more than 5 words, c) ideally needs a face image and d) attractive enough to cut through the clutter. I hope you liked the content aswell. 100x effort went into the presentation when compared to the thumbnail

Another interesting video Shankar👍...thanks for this insight, just one doubt, when should one see P/E and P/BV as a metric for valuation and when should one one see the cash reserve equivalents (NACV)..somehow I feel buffets free cash flow valuation metric is a good tool for valuation, since ultimately we normally pay for a stock based on what it earns and what it can earn..
@shankarnath
@shankarnath Жыл бұрын
Hi Anujoy. In my view, different valuation models fit different situations .. and in this channel, I'll be covering many of them in due time (maybe even design a course around it). But since you mentioned it, let's see a distinction plank in using cash versus earnings as the prime valuation indicator So, P/E works on an assumption i.e. the future earnings of the company. E.g. Maithan Alloys is at a PE of 2.3 (one of the lowest in the sector). But that earnings is trailing 12 months. Now, the EBIT of this company was 36-37% in the past 1 year while the management itself puts the long-term sustainable EBIT at 14%. So investors have to have a view on what's next with the earnings. This is not the case with cash which is right there on the books as of now .. and everyone can count cash. In my opinion, cash is the purest form of valuation and this is the reason why cash is deducted from market cap & debt when calculating a firm's enterprise value. It is also the reason why companies & CFOs like to report it as "net debt" rather than "debt". Hope this helps.

Hi Shankar..Needed your feedback .. I have an SIP of 50000 20K is Parag Parikh Flexicap 10K in Axis Midcap 10k in PGIM Midcap 10K in UTI Nifty 50 Index I started these SIPs last year and will continue to hold this for 15-20 years for long term. Is it a good mix ( The mid cap funds have a portion of small cap in them already , so am looking at a moderately aggressive all equity portfolio )
@shankarnath
@shankarnath Жыл бұрын
Hello Sandeep - I haven't analysed these schemes so won't be in a position to help you presently. I'll circle back once if I come to these schemes But here's how you might want to go about this: 1. Write down why you selected these funds last year. Seek an answer for not just individual schemes but look at them as a portfolio i.e. what % in large, mid, small & international were you targeting? 2. Has anything changed in 1 year? (i.e. the investing style or fund manager or proportion of assets etc.) 3. Given that you are OK to hold these for 20 years, how many years of allowance or % of allowance can you give those funds? (this can be like "I am OK with 2 years of bad performance" or "I am OK as long as the portfolio is not more than 2% off the benchmark" etc.) Once you do this exercise, you exactly concern will show up. And then just clean out that concern. I have tried this with dozens of people in my previous organizations .. it works everytime. Most times, the only thing that is needed is patience .. but yes, there were some guys who had glaring mistakes but nothing that couldn't be cleaned out.
@nayaksandeep2001
@nayaksandeep2001 Жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot Shankar for such a detailed response. You are exactly right on this point and as you said it boils down to patience and belief in the fund managers who I had done my due diligence on pre investing. I had a similar scenario as you where I held 20 funds thanks to my father who in his naivity thought more diversification , safer it is and invested on my behalf in initial part of my career ie 10 years. I have rebalanced my portfolio (All this corpus was with a regular funds) and have started thus additional sip via direct funds, thanks to my increased knowledge over the years with knowledge that experts like you have bestowed . I hope to be financially free by 50 (watched your video on ET money on FIRE and 10cr corpus etc and gained belief on the value of compunding On this note ,I see most financial planners providing plans with retirement at 60 and saving at least 20% of income (This percentage is barely enough in reality esp for early compounding benefits).While for millenials I Believe 50 is where most of us will peak out esp in IT. In you planned series if you could add a video for millenials like us on Behavioral finance with realitsic retirement age it would really help. I believe asset allocation and long term investing with delayed gratification, compounding, beating inlfation (many still think 1 cr corpus at 60 is a good enough or 5 cr without realisng the dent via inflation in its value) is quite underrated in this FOMO world.

hello mr.shankar, what is your take on the possible incoming deflation/recession, its severity and possible paths individual investors can take based on their risk-need. even if you're going to make a video on it later, would love to hear your views in the comment replies.
@shankarnath
@shankarnath Жыл бұрын
Hello RdG - I don't bother with it. Over the last 18 years I've been investing, the talk of recession has happened too many times and there have been pause periods (even sharp falls) along the way. And while these pains were happening .. it is also true that collectively, the avg. Indian company have been improving their per-share earnings. I say this because earnings is my gauge for where a stock or stock market is likely to be eventually. It also helps that I have another 30 years of equity runway in front of me. I expect a lot more sharp falls like what I saw in 2007, 2008, 2015, 2016 & 2020 .. but I also expect the EPS of Indian companies to jump up in the range of 7 to 15% during this period. An apt line: Safar mein nikle ho .. thodi dhoop aur baarish to hogi hi

Congratulations on your new channel Shankar! I always look forward to to see your detailed analysis. I had a few questions: 1) With this channel, do you plan to cover more advanced topics as compared to your ET Money videos? I feel 3 of your 4 uploads cover more advanced topics... at least for a casual investor like me :) But well explained, so no complaints. 2) Should a casual investor go for the techniques you have talked about-- coffee-can investing, timing investments in small and large cap funds, investing in cash rich companies? Some good foreign finance youtubers say that casual investors are better off sticking to index funds. What do you think? 3) Also, I had started investing with ET Money Genius in both stocks and MFs, do you think that it continues to be a good place to invest?
@shankarnath
@shankarnath Жыл бұрын
Thank you Siddhant 1. Yes. I don't have a schedule but if you give it a couple of months, you'll know have a fair idea of the pattern 2. Yes. Learn and adapt. It's a good point you raise .. imagine, dietician A tells you .. "have a salad everyday as it's healthy for you". But what a dietician B says "I'll put you on a diet program that keeps you as healthy as dietician A but you can have chole bhature, gol gappe, pav bhaji and kachori sabzi once a week". Now, everyone will have a preference but I bet you & I will choose the dietician that gives us the most happiness. That's the power of choice and I'll advocate everyone to learn, choose what's appropriate & customize per requirements 3. The good thing is that my opinion doesn't matter because the portfolio you are invested in is different from mine. I mean your allocations are different, your tenure is different and even your stocks are different. Therefore your and mine performance is also different. Since you have about 4-5 months of Genius data and the app also gives you benchmark returns, you are in a position to compare it yourself. If you are having trouble with that part then the Genius team can be connected via email to help with specifics.

@@ggopi767 Yes, gold helps. I can give you a crude example and it might work but please do some homework of your own on this. There is a class of funds called multi-asset funds i.e. equity, debt and gold. You can pick the one you are comfortable with .. I think SBI, Nippon, ICICI, Axis etc. have a scheme there. You can copy the proportion of equity, debt and gold there in their monthly fundfactsheet and do it yourself. Or you can invest in these funds to avoid having to do these transactions. But effectively, you are cloning the fund manager's strategy and view on markets, gold and bond yields. Hope this helps.

Hi, per screener.in: 1. Tata Invt Corporation: cash-to-mcap is 0.3% 2. Bajaj Holdings: 2.1% 3. JSW Holdings: 0.2% To be double sure, I checked the balancesheet of Tata Invt Corp. and see the % to be less than 1%. In the video, I am taking companies which have atleast 33% of cash as % of mcap.

@Karthik Meher Thank you very much. On the face of it, it seems tough for me but this where we should leverage other's knowledge. I don't know anyone but if you come across someone who can : a) select the perfect ETF for the future, b) define the ideal allocation for the future and c) can identify a 20%+ returns ETF .. .. then please let me know. Would love to interview that person on camera and release on KZfaq for everyone's benefit Having said this, I think educational videos can be created around factor investing, asset allocation etc.
