A lot of Spearos ask for marks, but let's face it, no one gives their top marks away. So why not find your own? In this video I go through how I found a good mark from the free Navonics online charts, and shoot a good sized Bass
The mark revealed is a fairly decent one, I don't mind giving it away as the only nearby parking is pay and display which I hate!
If you enjoy the video it helps me out if you like, subscribe and comment, means the channel can grow and more people can benefit from it!

Fantastic video thank you, looking forward to the next video. I was out for my first time on the west coast just south of where you went. Vis wasnt great but learnt some valuable lessons about patience and relaxing in the water. Keep up the content thanks. Jim

Glad you found it helpful. Vis has been pretty bad recently, have often ended up going after Lobsters as it's been too murky for efficient spearfishing!

Glad you enjoyed the video. Here I’m using the Salvimar Metal 85cm gun with twin 14mm bands, has been an ideal set up for North Wales

Thanks, glad you're enjoying them! I use Navonics a lot, really useful to find big drop offs, pinnacles etc. Found some great marks in Scotland that way last year

@@jackmetcalfe8542 brilliant mate that’s great info. I’m currently in Australia but headed back to north Wales April time would be great to catch up for a dive and some local knowledge of the area if you where up for it?

@@andrewcleary2184 yes I'm keen, shot some great Pollock last April/May but can take a bit longer for the Bass to come inshore. Drop me a message when you're here and lets get out!

Thanks Jack for the video. I am always curious to know if the camouflage wetsuit makes any difference? I use a normal black wetsuit Cheers Mo

Good question! I don't think it makes any difference, fish generally know you're there anyway and lots of the top guys wear plain black wetsuits

LOL, or just trawl angling reports on forums and facebook. When i found out spear fishing involves shooting fish from sub 10 ft and usually a lot less i actually wondered what you get out of it. Where is the skill in that ? Do people take up spear fishing because they are crap anglers and prefer an easier option ? The only skill i can see is the ability to hold your breath, finding fish is easy, i can do it without looking under the water with a rod and line. This is another activity that with the advent of social media is putting a lot more pressure on mature breeding stock Bass where without all the easy online info a significant proportion of those new to it would never have started. Also i can't help but think there are a lot of spear fishermen that are selling their catch, especially Bass so plastering marks all over you tube probably isn't a good idea.

Rob - some uninformed comments from you there, I'll explain The difficulty in spearfishing is getting close enough to fish to shoot them, doing this with larger Bass in particular is extremely difficult, and with larger Pollock usually involves sustained diving to 10-20m which isn't easy in currents and cold water Off N Wales there are no more than 10 people regularly spearfishing, and of these not many are actually catching much I don't know what makes you think Spearfishermen are selling the catch, it's something I've personally never heard of happening so rather than speculate why not provide some evidence? You're more than welcome to come for a dive with me, why don't we hit some of the deep offshore pinnacles and as you're going to find it all so easy and clearly have all of the requisite skills already I'm sure you'll come out with whatever catch you want

@@jackmetcalfe8542 A big Bass or Pollack is a fish over 10lbs. I have only watched a couple of spear fishing videos but haven't seen any that size. You claimed 7lb for a 68 cm fish that was what i would call in good lean condition. It would not have made 7lb. The actual skill is in finding the fish, what do you get out of shooting them at sub 3 metres ? There are reports of spear fisherman shooting Bass at night with lamps on Chesil and in Wales and i am fairly sure that is illegal. If you are free diving to over 60 feet, fair play but the light levels in your welsh Pollack video don't look that deep and most of the better shore fish would be between 15 ft and 40 ft max, even shallower at first and last light. I have no interest in shooting fish at near point blank range, will stick to finding them and catching them in all conditions, especially rough winter seas with rod and line. If you wonder why i have a bee in my bonnet about spear fishing go and have a look at a facebook account called MATTHEW_JARO to understand why some people are getting your activity a bad name. Undersize wrasse, cod and pollack in numbers.

@@robertgallacher7214 That particular fish had eaten two 25cm Pollock (as seen in the video) hence the weight - it would have been lighter normally Yes, in Wales most of the fish are very shallow, we don't get much kelp growth deeper than 10m, the Pollock in that video were shot between 4 - 12m at first light as you say The real skill is getting close enough to the fish to shoot at point blank range, I think when people such as yourself who don't spear watch my videos they think that you just get into the sea and start blasting big fish immediately, when in reality many sessions you barely see a fish (they're often there but won't approach a diver, I'd say line angling is easier to catch, especially with livebait, I do a lot of line angling as well) Yes I have seen some of his KZfaq videos....personally I don't take Pollock under 50cm...and have never shot a wrasse! I would reccomend you look at a guy called 'Happy Hooker' too, he's taking bucket loads of tiny Pollock from deep wrecks on feathers which shocked me as there's zero meat on those fish

@@jackmetcalfe8542 I mostly lure fish these days apart from winter cod fishing. I am not a boat angler, fishing for fish with swim bladders in deep water means there is no chance to return them successfully if they are not required/undersize. The difference between line angling and spear fishing is being able to see fish vs working out where they should be but still not knowing if they are there or more importantly feeding. I have found many bass that weren't interested in feeding when i did, not a problem when you can shoot them regardless what mood they are in.

@@robertgallacher7214 are you getting many larger Pollock off the shore? I’ve very rarely even seen Pollock over 6lb when diving, saw a solid double figure fish off the Llyn but it wouldn’t come close enough Shooting medium sized fish e.g a 45cm Bass is pretty easy, but the big fish spook instantly and are tough to hunt. Often big pollock will stay just out of range and look at me until my breath runs out, the bigger fish aren’t stupid
