That was absolutely fascinating and you made me check a few records in my collection. Feels like fans are being ripped off for subpar vinyls. It’s shocking really when we spend so much money on these albums.

Really good video. That loudness website will come in handy! There’s a really good book called ‘Perfecting Sound Forever’ by Greg Milner about the history of recorded music and how each technological advance through the ages has effected the recording. It’s brilliant. Unfortunately most advances result in worse sound quality and it almost always down to the original artist! It’s mad to think that the invention of the CD, the format with the highest dynamic range, has resulted in a lower dynamic range in the masters that artists approve for manufacture.
@metalmickey
@metalmickey 2 жыл бұрын
Cheers Mark, I’ve not heard about the book but il have a look for it. Yeah it’s widely seen that vinyl is the big dynamic format and like you say CD is the better one, lots of releases on vinyl these days absolutely just pander to the resurgence and make vinyl shaped CDs…still if they get the package just right I still buy it 😂

I’m not sure if it’s years of playing in front of loud amplifiers, but I’m really not too critical on an albums sound! If there’s no hissing in the background or distortion from the bass being too high, then it’s good for me! Some albums I’ve been told don’t sound too good, don’t bother me too much! I think if I was listening to classical or jazz music, I’d be a little more critical! I didn’t know of the DR site & it’s a very handy tool, especially if you are thinking of picking up a newer press of an older album!! Very informative video Mike!🤘🏻

@@metalmickey Welcome mate, found it useful for sure! Yeah I guess that makes a difference to the sound quality. I tend to play my music through my PlayStation through my TV. Sometimes I use my computer but most of the time I'm in my room so it's easier to use the PlayStation. That's mad about Death Magnetic scoring a 3, I personally like that album. But it's way too loud, it saturates the guitars and vocals too much. Even through the tv 😂😂

I'm disgusted by the whole remix and remaster trend. I always thought a lot of the remasters I've heard, sound a little abrasive. Now I know why. Just for arguments sake, let's say they can improve the sound, I don't care, I'm still more interested in hearing the original recordings. The whole trend was out of control when they started remastering Darkthrone. Remember the good ol' days when you would buy a CD and it would say, "We have attempted to preserve, as closely as possible, the sound of the original recording."

Cool stuff. I have all my Maiden on the parlophone 2014 vinyl pressings and a couple of OGs. Your correct that I can’t tell a sound difference with Japanese vs other pressings, I just thought it was my shitty stereo. I buy Japanese for the mintyness as they always seem to be well looked after and heavier card sleeve and usually a bigger booklet and I have never had a miss pressed or warped one. Very interesting 🤔

@@metalmickey Yeah used record stores are a good place to find original pressings for a good price. That’s where I buy most of my physical CDs these days. Brand new albums are too expensive and are harder to find as the record stores that do exist don’t stock as much stuff as they used to and cater more to vinyl buyers now.

I was never a huge fan of the "remaster" trend I always got the impression that they just "modernize" the original, as in compress the crap out of it and make it louder. Glad I have many OG vinyl pressings in my collection, they seem to have the best quality soundwise. In a way i'm glad to find that i have no ears for certain details. I have the 2004 Megadeth remaster cd and it sounds fine to me. What did bother me though was when you said that they have tampered with the original recording. Rerecording some parts. I don't like that at all, i have to see if i can replace that version. Of course there are the questions of the price and the availability. It's hard to buy something that isn't available or goes for stupid price. Pasi

Hello, the 2008 Rust in peace vinyl is not a remix (ie the music is not altered by new voice etc). This is actually a good one. I personally bought it this year for £30 as oppose to an OG which is very expensive (£100 or £150 + on Ebay for winning the bid…). Also the Master of puppets (remastered) got good to very good reviews (on Discography or Hoffman forum… it’s not my bible though some stones I feel some comments are very pedantic or massively fussy, managed to get a headache reading the comments about Pink Floyd vinyl lol). Lastly, I have Death Magnetic (blackened version) and I must admit it sounds better than the CD… I know in terms of DR the vinyl has a DR score slightly better but in terms of listening experience I personally can feel the difference. That’s subjective I guess but now I listen DM in vinyl as oppose to the MP3 or CD. Thanks for your videos 🤘🏻

I didn’t even know that site existed. I have a few FDR records like Entombed reissues from Earache that sounds great. It’s really eye opening to see how poorly remastered albums do, but I guess it is as you say that they twerk the sound for earbuds and the like. Suddenly it makes a bit more sense that people are paying huge premiums on Japanese pressings. Although it seems that not all Japanese pressing might be good. It also becomes quite clear why I should stay away from the Maiden 98 CDs 😄. Very interesting vido Mike!

The remixed 2018 Final Kill version of the debut Killing is my Business- thats pretty good. I think it sounds awesome in fact. Mustaine had to rerecord the vocals on Them Boots because the original songwriter didn’t like the changed lyrics Mustaine used on the original version of the album. But I agree with you about the rest of the Megadeth remix/remasters, and I would also say the original Peace Sells is better too. It’s only the debut where I found any kind of true enhancement, and that’s a later remix as well.
