On the west coast we scale the logs on the small end. The taper was considered "overrun" in board feet.

I dont care what your reasons are for being here, These ladies are good at what they do, and look good doing it!!!!! I love coming here to see stuff they have to say, and I always get a little bit more from the education side! Is it wrong for me to be interested in something, as well as be interested in some one? They make me interested, that cant be wrong! Luv you girls! Do what you do! Maybe the rest of the world will catch up!

You have to remember that a scale stick only measures the calculated volume of wood. Any sawmill can get a percentage over run especially a band saw. The scale stick allows for a 5/16” saw kerf. ‘Em s saw-blade is probably less than 1/8” kerf so every cut she makes she gains 3/16 on the log scale. Where I come from construction grade lumber specs allow for a small amount of wane (bark on the lumber) which is another way a sawmill can beat the log scale.
@Yettiattack
@Yettiattack Жыл бұрын
No one considers those facts. Its strictly the max bdft you can yield from the log. Not to mention a lob buyer is going to benefit themselves not you.

Em should be able to beat the log scale by 20% although I think she does make somewhat heavy slabs 😮in my opinion, they do use the slabs for firewood so it isn’t serious. At least the slabs are not just burnt like they used to be here in Canada. 😊

I've made it a goal that every day is an opportunity to learn something new and to seek that lesson out. Thanks for delivering that teachable moment in a very enjoyable way, very personable with the meteorological dig which landed nicely to the clear demonstration of how that measurement is calculated. Please consider to make more of these (perhaps once a week, maybe even devote Fridays to pure educational topics). Thou Rocks!

Always such a positive presentation! For some reason, with the snow falling and seemingly a less than fun situation, it reminds me of the old story about the young fellow who fell into the horse poop on the tail and came up laughing and happy. "Why are you so joyous? "asked his companion?" The young feller replied ," With all this horse poop, there's gotta be a pony here somewhere!" It takes a lot of genuine interest and professionalism to remain happy, even where the snow flakes are coming down, well done, Em!!!!!

Great video once again ladies! Thank you for the education. My brother made one of those scale sticks as a college class project back in about 1967. It's been kicking around our old rustic log cabin my family owns out in the middle of nowhere forever, and my brother never told anyone how to use it. Well, I'm gonna see if I can next time I'm out there. Thank you for another informative and entertaining video! ben
