Chris, you talk about how many cheaper paddles perform around the same as the Perseus. I think a video comparing cheaper paddles to more expensive (big name) paddles, such as the perseus would do really well.

Ria eyewear for the win!!!! I’ve had mine since October 2023. No issues with fogging up doesn’t even feel like they are on at all. Bit pricey but worth it if it means I get to play pickleball and play without any hesitation. I played against someone with the new gear box paddle and the ball flys off that paddle. One hit to the eye with that ball and it’s game over for your vision. Model name is called Reflex Clear HD if anyone is wondering.

Big fan of you and Will! I happen to have been in the eyewear business both designing and bringing eyewear to market for over 25 years. There are certain materials in frames and lenses that are necessary in order to absorb the impact of a pickleball being hit at high velocity while protecting the receiver from injury and not being damaged from the impact. In addition, polarized lenses with their glare blocking feature actually are not a good fit for pickleball or tennis as the lenses tend to inhibit depth perception. We are currently designing some proper pickleball frames along with the appropriate lens sets and will send you and Will some production pickleball protective eyewear when they are ready. Thanks again for your terrific videos!

I use the Gearbox sunglasses with smoke colored lens for outdoor and clear lens for indoor. I like that they have a slim fit version for people with smaller faces. For $40, I think they are a great option. Would you add them to the group of glasses you will try as a comparison as I would be curious of what you think compared to the more expensive brands. Goodnight, Chris!!😂

Eyewear will be as common as a biking helmet in the near future. It is not IF but WHEN a top pro gets hit with serious consequences that the general population will wake up. I always wear sunglasses outside and use to not wear anything indoor. Then I got wacked hard in the eye outdoors and thank god I had sunglasses on. It would have been a trip to ER for sure. I went out and got some eyewear for indoor playing.

Speaking of protective eyewear...we include a pair of Jorestech glasses with every paddle purchase. These glasses are ANSI Z87+ Certified and also provide UV (UVA and UVB radiation) protection. They also block blue light. Removing blue light improves sharpness, enhances contrast, improves depth perception and even reduces eye fatigue.

Just bought a pair of prescription RIA Forte sunglasses. Wasn't my first style pick but it's the only model they have that works with a progressive lens. If I used a single correction lens they have several styles to pick from. The glasses are tested/certified to meet Z87.1 impact resistance. In the case of the Forte, they can take an 80mph impact from a pickleball flush on the front of the lens and not break or have any part of the lens/frame impact the eye. Needed sunglasses anyway and figured I should just go ahead and get something that's going to provide some protection. Hope I made a good choice since with the prescription lenses it's not cheap.

Oakley Prizm Golf or Dark Golf lenses (have a rose base color tint) that are NOT polarized... seems to be the consensus for object related tracking sports in both bright and low light conditions. Get the style you like, I went with Sutro Lites in Prizm Golf lenses for my 50 year old eyes. Tried several lenses and glasses... and settled on these FTW! Not to mention that I have no worries now when wearing them at the kitchen line against the Fearbox Power. LFG!!!

I’m not a Selkirk guy for the same reason, but the only thing that makes me love it is the swing weight option, I’ve always wanted a good sweet spot, elongated 16 with good pop. The one I’m demoing has better pop, similar power (because I’m swinging faster), and way faster hands, and better control than my flash14, and I’m a Vatic rep

My first non-Amazon paddle was a Selkirk Evo Soft I purchased a year ago. 2 months later the handle broke. Submitted warranty claim and promptly received a replacement SLK Evo Soft 2.0. Opened the package and the butt of the handle was already coming off. Submitted and 2nd claim and upgraded to a Halo for $60 more. Selkirk also gave me a $25 gift code for the trouble, which I promptly used to buy a Halo for my wife. So Selkirk warranty and customer service are excellent. QC and durability 🤔

Have you tried or do you like Tifosi eyewear? They seem like they have some good safety glasses and are pretty stylish too. Also, do you feel or have you looked into how lens color can affect ball visibility? I’ve heard red lenses can help increase the visibility of the optic yellow ball. I have both the Halo Control and the Luxx. I should’ve returned the Luxx, as I didn't like it. I bought the Vanguard Control as I considered it an improvement over the Halo (better performance), and I like the more durable face and lifetime warranty of the Vanguard. I am a paddle nerd and also own a 6.0 DBD and Engage Pro 6.0 Ex. I liked the Halo better over the competitors paddles, and went back to it. So, for me the Vanguard Control was a desired upgrade. And I was able to pick the lightweight (received 7.3 oz) option and the Vanguard swing weight of 110 are awesome. Adding weighted tungsten tape to a light paddle is the way to go for me. Can’t lighten up a heavy paddle. And the spin is good and better than my Halo.

Not sure if you wear contact lenses, but could you cover prescription protective eyewear? Depending on high your prescription is, you cannot necessarily order rimless glasses or glasses without the bottom frame. Some prescription glasses only allow a prescription up to -4.0. I unfortunately have a much stronger prescription, so my choices are limited. I would be interested in protective eyewear/goggles that go over glasses too given my prescription is so strong. I also would benefit from bifocals or progressive lenses. A lot of middle aged and seniors need this feature. Do safety glasses work just as well? I have a pair from Walmart that were like under $5. I tried them last night with contacts on. A bit blurry on the periphery, but seemed to work. Not very attractive though. Thanks! I'm starting to shop.

Protective eyewear is becoming MUCH more prevalent at my local courts. I think it's a good idea as the ball is traveling faster now and many people are speeding up lower balls at the kitchen that often results in a head high trajectory. Fortunately nobody has been seriously injured yet, but it is eventually a likely scenario. The Oakley Flak Jacket XLJ's and Radarlock Path were my go to glasses for almost a decade for any outdoor activity. I always preferred the amber based lenses; Tungsten and Gold Iridium. However, once they released the Prism lineup the Road lens ultimately became my preferred, I believe all the Prism are a rose base color. Since I can no longer wear contacts I've had to resort to Rx sunglasses and my current amber polarized are not the best in my experience. The tint and light transmission are good, but I feel the polarization aspect for me just does not work as I tend to misjudge ball trajectory (depth perception) a lot more versus clears or just tinted lenses. YMMV

On Kevlar, they probably meant it is more elastic/resilient referring to impact. Just by the attributes of the material. Carbon fiber is very strong and stiff but is more brittle. In some KZfaqrs vid they put a worn carbon fiber face under a microscope and found broken fibers. So they might not have meant texture durability. I could be wrong. 🤷‍♂️ it would be interesting to see a carbon fiber vs Kevlar wear test.

The top pros skip the Minnesota event every year because of the weather and inconvenience, not the surface. A lot of people seem to feel like the Vulcan actually bounces more than other balls, but we’ll see. It’s too bad it struggles staying in round because otherwise it’s a clear upgrade on the dura.

I'm now curious. When I see pickleball paddle spreadsheets where RPM's and Top speeds are listed they all vary from reviewer to reviewer. And when the reviewers are saying top speed averages like 60-70 MPH, when pros like Ben Johns can hit 85MPH plus. It seems like the review stats are really unreliable. Especially when looking to buy the top speed or top rpm paddle. Weights of paddles, swing weights, grit, etc. all have tools that can be used. Someone, maybe Pickleball Studio needs to get some engineering students to build them a top speed and rpm machine as a college project. It can be adjusted to equal a player who can swing at X speed = output. Obviously a machine can do better than a human. But you could get some of the pro's to hit a paddle a few hundred times. Get their max numbers and adjust the machine until it matches the top players speed and rpm with the same paddle. It would provide a more accurate numbers.

@joem6010

Here are my thoughts on "grit" durability with all of the various raw carbon/kevlar/fiberglass paddles. The actual hitting surface is actually the epoxy that has texture molded in from the peel ply before the epoxy cures. So what is wearing out is that top layer of epoxy. It almost doesn't matter if the paddle has carbon fiber, fiberglass, or epoxy. It comes down to the durability of the epoxy used because that is the thing that is smoothing out with use. Better grades of epoxy might have slightly more durability before the surfaces eventually begins to smooth out. I still wonder what happens as the wear occurs to the point where you get more exposed kevlar in paddles that have that hitting surface. Would that surface be any more grabby? Carbon fiber can be sanded and will sand smoothly. But kevlar is difficult to sand and can literally ball up and have a fuzzy surface instead of getting sanded smooth.
