Thanks Jan - could you give me an idea of what range a freelancer could potential earn after 1 year of specializing in Shopify Development?

Depends a bit on location and of course on the person. in the US $60-100k / year is possible. Central Europe is kinda similar. Overseas (e.g. India) clients are usually looking for cheaper deals, which makes it a bit harder to charge higher rates in the beginning. So here I'd rather aim for $50-60k, which is still good considering the costs of living.
