How to finish a table by applying Rubio Monocoat. In this video, I’ll show you how to apply two coats of Rubio monocoat. I discussed this technique with other makers as well as Rubio themselves. Rubio says most woods only need one coat, however, you can apply a second coat to species like walnut. There are some tips and tricks you need to know to avoid some potential problems though. Since this is designed to be a one-coat finish.

I finished wood floors for forty plus years. The last ten we used hardwax oil. Rubio was one. The temptation is always to go with a couple thin coats. With furniture that might be best. You can, however saturate the piece more on the mono coat. Leaving the finish in contact with the wood for 10 or 15 minutes let’s it penetrate and fuse with the cellulose fibers in the wood. We always thought of working it into the wood until no more would go. Even so, it is amazing how much coverage you get from a liter. Also worth consideration is Woca Diamond. Using white oil on distressed wood was a go to for us. Love your work, Cam.

Cam, thanks for these great Rubio videos (and your many others.) Just finished with Rubio for the first time on a pretty spectacular bookmatched walnut free edge dining table, and before each and every step of the finishing process I reviewed the applicable segment of your video as tutorial. Your brief summary captions at the end of the video were particularly useful. I got a beautiful natural result and felt in control of the process throughout --- no doubt avoided a number of newbie errors that could have turned my peaceful maiden voyage into a frantic nightmare. It felt like you were right there giving me instructions mano a mano. Thank you!

Cam, Thank you for making these videos. I enjoy watching wood, especially walnut, come to life through your expertise. I have loved walnut wood since I saw an Aunt harvest it from her property and have it made into her kitchen cabinets. I was a teenager then and finally when I had my own kitchen remodeled at the age of 50, I had my cabinets made from walnut. I was asked what kind of stain I wanted them to apply and I felt surprised, wondering why anyone would do that to walnut. I replied that I wanted something clear so I could see the wood. My refrigerator, trash compactor, and dishwasher are fronted with walnut. It is a most beautiful room. Watching you work with wood is such a joy. Again, thank you from Syracuse.

Man I'm about 2 months into my first epoxy table, tonight I'm about to do the Rubio finishing, and I just have to say thank you for all your content. I get into a lot of hobbies and people usually ask where I learn from. My usual response is "KZfaq University" but for all the stuff I've been doing over the last couple months, my answer has been Blacktail Studio. I've been woodworking for 2 years and learned a lot from a lot of content creators, but this project has been particularly rewarding and I have, effectively, you to thank for it. Thanks so much for all you do!

Hi Cam. I’m really enjoying your videos. You’re not only a master woodworker but also a highly talented choreographer, director and cinematographer. First compliment is about your choice of lights. I grew up in the film business in Hollywood. Why didn’t I think of that? Fabulous idea! Second, I’m a wooden boat guy. Restored many over the years. I’m stuck on my latest project due to medical issues. Dropping the table on your head was something I can relate to. One additional surgery and recovery and I’ll be back at it. Years ago I did a kitchen remodel with butcher block countertops. They were fantastic. Now I’m in the middle of a house remodel. Seriously thinking about slab countertops. You got me thinking. Just wanted to say thank you and let you know how much I’ve learned from and enjoyed your videos. Keep up the good work!

Cam, as I stated in another comment, I've had a lot of experience sanding and buffing many projects. Two things I would suggest. First, always use a mask and wear full body protetion like a zip up worksuit. Looks goofy, but it's worth it. Even when sanding wood. After two decades of working I had a sudden allergic reaction to wwood resin produced by sanding. If I hadn't been wearing a mask I woudn't be here today. My doctor said it happens. Also, I'd suggest to anybody who is interrested in perfect finishes to make friends with a local bodyshop as they have great knowledge and can advise on sanding and buffing tools and tecniques and materials that can result in spectacular results.

Hi Cam. Question: in one or two of your later videos, you mention that you’ve sanded up to 220/240 rather than sticking to the max 180 (let alone the Rubio’ recommendation of max 120). Have you noticed any adverse effects and/or benefits to shading a notch higher than 180, i.e. 220/240, when finishing with Rubio Monocoat?

As I have never seen it in person & couldn't really get a feel for the actual look in all the videos I've been watching... until yours that is, superb photography. Hello Cam, I’m just finishing my first live edge desk, thanks to your great videos here it’s going to be lovely. I purchased the slab from Art in Sisters and he referred me to your videos as I was a complete neophyte in wood working. One suggestion I might offer from my experience is I would use black caulk next time. I did follow your instructions to use mold release for my very porous slab, with good results. But I noticed hairline white caulk nestled in the fibers. I used a razor pen blade to get out as much as I could. On my first coat of Rubio the little hairline caulk pop’d to become visible. I think a black would blend in better and resolve this issue. You’re great and I truly enjoyed all the many videos of yours I’ve watched.

Cam, you're really selling me on this Rubio Monocoat I may have to give it a go. One thing I would be curious about if you have a smaller piece to test on - how does it hold up to some heat? I'm looking to build a kitchen table for a friend in the near future, and lets say someone sets down a plate that has some hot food on it, or maybe someone set something down on a pot holder that was too small and transferred some heat. Could be an interesting comparison!

I can't comment specifically on Monocoat, but can say as a French Polisher / Sprayer of 30 years I would not trust any oiled finish to hold up against the heat or general wear and tear a kitchen table top has to withstand. I use either a 2 pack acid catalysed lacquer or a two pack polyurethane, both are spray applied and both need the correct type of mask. But they will withstand more than just a hot plate, my own table has been done with PU its over 10 years old and the finish is perfect.

Hey Cam, just wanted to say thanks for this video and in fact for all your videos. This one has in particular been so helpful for me and I really appreciate it. Honestly I don’t understand why you get any of the negative comments you get, I guess there are some folks who just have to take it out on someone right! But it has been so helpful to me the way you are very honest, mostly about your mistakes, it encourages me greatly 😂. I used to build guitars for Lowden guitars for 12 years and play music full time, but recently I have started my own little workshop woodturning and I’m trying to get into building more things with wood and epoxy resin. I recently subscribed to your channel and have been really enjoying all your videos and learning a lot from you and your willingness to share all that you do, so thank you so much. 🙏🏻 I haven’t had the courage to put my own KZfaq videos out just yet, I’m still just using instagram reels, but I’m working on it. I plan on signing up to your epoxy resin table workshop, so looking forward to that. Thanks again buddy. Hope this encourages you today. Blessings Wes

Very nice. Thing I like about this resin table is that it's predominantly wood. The satin, almost matte finish is elegant.

Cam, Great video! We use Monocoat at my work on pretty much everything and it holds up great! We actually use a bees wax spray to freshen up pieces that are used daily and it looks great.

Cam, I really enjoyed your video... always so detailed. I've seen a few different videos on applying Rubio, yours has to be the best one, hands down. Like you said, sanding is key even though most of us despise the task... I like your sanding method (up to 180 grit) as opposed to Rubio's recommendation of 120 grit (I'm assuming based on their product usage on floor). Also, your two coat application makes a lot of sense, which is evidenced by your beautiful end product. Well done.

Hello my name is Mike Reynolds I live in Canada, Ontario on Lake Huron I loved this video. I did a live edge table last year and used Rubio monocoat ( not sure of the spelling). Had never herd of it but caught a video by John Maleckie and he used it so I decided to give it a try. It turned out great it is the first project I have ever done the table is red elm and is 7’3” Long by 50” wide. Thanks for tour videos they are really a joy to watch
