This video explains how to bring a welded stainless steel tube to a polish finish in just three steps. Great for finishing handrails.

Been doing this for years, and a mirrored finish is easy, even on the inside corners. But have a brushed finish, especially longitudinally, and if you don't have it right it looks like a nice paint job on a car......over bad bodywork. Maybe I'm picky, but the best results come from a file after grinding. Just like block sanding on a car, you need to be able to 'see' the finish disappear under the successive steps. It needs to be FLAT! Even slightly too heavy with a soft unitized wheel will leave waves and bumps that are not as that noticeable with a mirrored surface, but brush it out and you will see the flaws. All that said, REX-CUT is the grinding wheel to go to for weld finishing. I have used them for years and always have had good results with them. My steps are basically these; Grind the weld with a REX CUT A 54 GFX or similar. Try to get the edge of the wheel on the weld only. Grinding on anything other than the weld immediately gives you a low spot. Very difficult to do however, so when the wheel develops a path or groove in the weld, pull the wheel back under light pressure away from the weld. Do not hold the wheel on the surface constantly for the moment you reverse direction and go back toward the weld, you have just cut the parent metal twice as deep as the wheel pauses momentarily, BIG NO NO ! This becomes very obvious when you try to polish the area, and thousands of bad examples abound! It is as if you are brushing the weld with a paint brush, you pull away from the weld until you see the toe of the weld disappear. Next step is to file the area flat with a fairly smooth cutting file. I use an air file with a chainsaw blade file mounted to it to get in the groove and a flat file on the flat portions of the pipe or tube. You will see the coarse grinder marks disappear! After this I will use a dual action body sander with a 320 grit disc set in the grinding mode, this is the setting where the wheel is locked to spin. Again try to use a brushing action for the same reasons stated above. It is satisfying to see the coarse file marks disappear under a very smooth surface. Then I switch the sander to orbital mode and blend in the finish. If the sander disc edge comes down to a knife edge this helps a lot to get in close to the weld. Another option here although expensive, is METABO's weld finishing tool. It uses unitized wheels on an extended shaft grinder so that the tool is out of the way. Just like a regular angle grinder but the wheel is now about 9" out from the motor. The wheels are dressed to fit into the groove and it does a very nice job, but this too will cut too deep if you are not careful. It is variable speed so this helps much. At this point the surface is ready to brush or polish out, and if the above steps are done properly it takes very little time to get a beautiful finish. However, after 30 years in the fabrication and welding field, I am still learning and I am always thrilled to discover new and better tools and procedures! Keep up the good work REX-CUT!

Thank you Jack for taking the time to share your process. We are always interested in hearing the steps fabrication professionals take to finish applications. Also, we are very happy you use our GFX wheel.

Do you lads use a dynafile or equivalent?
@jacko44834 жыл бұрын
@@Adam-ui3ot Hi Adam! Forgot I had posted this but I use a cheap air file, I think ( GASP!!!) I got it from Harbor Freight or someplace similar. Dynabrade is the absolute best but you can wear out a bunch of cheap air files for the cost of one Dynabrade, of which I own several, great tools. The files that come with the air tool are garbage so I grind the shank on small good files to fit the holder. If you get or have one, try to grind the flat on the file so that it has a slight ramp to it so that as the file is being "thrown out" on the outward stroke the set screw gets tighter. Hope this makes sense. Another option is to use good hand files. I will take a flat file, better if it does not have teeth on the thin edge, and grind a small radius along the edge of the teeth. If you are filing a weld on a pipe this keeps the teeth from cutting into the radius of the ground weld fillet. For the fillet you'll be using a round, rattail or chainsaw file after you rough shape it with a grinding wheel. The flat file is for the flat surface next to the weld. If your using the air file keep it moving for the same reasons that I stated in my original post about not letting the grinding wheel pause on the surface, it will remove too much metal which results in a dent or gouge in the surface, which will show up upon finishing. Hope this helps and be safe and healthy in these tough days. And pray and trust in God!

Hi Barbara, If you use a thin unitized disc, you should be able to get into the corner to finish the weld. We didn't add that step, but we do have an inside corner weld blending disc available, 4-1/2 x 1/4 x 7/8 type 27 Unitized 2SFN Disc, part #898599.

Is it possible to convert a steel metal to stainless steel?
@RexCut4 жыл бұрын
No, unfortunately not. But you can polish the steel to get some shine, however that won't give you the properties of stainless.
