00:22 - You don't have to be fast, you just need to be stubborn enough.
02:02 - Your hike will not be all sunshine and rainbows. And that’s a good thing!
04:11 - You truly cannot prepare for a thru hike until you do one.
05:31 - The mornings are your time to shine!
07:43 - Get your base weight down as much as possible, as soon as possible.
09:24 - Don’t force yourself to hike with others if you are sacrificing the type of hike you want. Hike your own Hike.
11:44 - If you start to develop an injury, please do not quit.
14:07 - Electrolyte packets could save your life.
15:06 - Talk to as many people on trail as possible. Be friendly, you never know who you might meet!
16:22 - To the class of 2023 and beyond - Finish your thru hike with integrity and honesty.

Another great video…I especially appreciate the last tip. Like you I saw so many thru hikers last year who cheated themselves of what I had…a complete experience of the WHOLE trail. I will add one more tip-take regular zeros. I averaged about one per week while on trail. Your body and mind need the rest and recovery and it allows time to catch up on your nutrition. I don’t think it slowed me down, as I was still able to complete the trail in 41/2 months at aged 60. Keep the great content coming!!!

So happy to hear you didn't miss a single mile of the experience. Thank you for sharing a big tip that I overlooked! We certainly did take regular zeros too. Need to figure out how many we took overall...certainly amounted to be a lot!

This is really great advice! I struggled with being slower than everyone my whole hike. It was especially rough in Georgia when I spent all day getting passed. I'd always been told how stubborn I was but I didn't believe it. 😂

My hike took six months and 19 days. And I had 46 zeros . It’s good advice to hike, less big mile days, and take less zeros. When I would approach a town, I try to work it so I’d get there in the morning enjoy the town ,and walk out in the afternoon and camp. Try to make it like a 7 mile or 10 mile day.
@hikinghomesteaders
@hikinghomesteaders Жыл бұрын
That's a really good ratio! We took at least 45 zeros I'm sure. Great strategy for arriving early to town too! Neros are the best.

Late risers - my kind of people 😂. I tried and tried to get into the early morning routine - failed miserably.

Yes, we are not the fluffy bunnies, but the wolverines who waited for everyone to leave camp first, haha! I could imagine how difficult it would be as a solo hiker! Don't think I would have been an early riser then

These are some pretty good tips. But I think it’s interesting that you acknowledge that everyone is looking for something different in the trail, but in the same breath say not to look for a tramily or hiking partner. Some people are looking for exactly that experience on the trail. So, I don’t think it’s fitting to tell people not to look for that. I do think people need to be patient and find a partner who has a similar style/pace as them or they won’t be happy or successful. But there’s nothing wrong with the people who are doing the hike specifically looking for that experience of camaraderie.

Totally! Everyone out there hikes their own hike, but if you are sacrificing what you want in order to continue hiking with others, then it's never worth it. You just need to stay true to yourself out there
