Today myself and fellow fishing guide Pete Rich tackle a much discussed question.....how does fishing differ between natural lakes and man made flowages. Pete and Myself spend a ton of time on the Chippewa Flowage in Hayward, Wisconsin so most of our answers will directly correlate to that body of water. I will discuss fishing for multi species on a variety of area lakes.
We discuss everything from spring walleye fishing to targeting fall musky during a period of water fluctuation. This is a jammed pack Tom Talk that if you can make it till the end will teach you a great deal.
Remember you guys/gals control the content that goes into these Tom Talks. With that being said, ask questions. I will answer them!
Thanks and Enjoy!

I watch all the fishing shows, and like anyone, I like watching people crack fish, but I really appreciate the advice on location, and techniques. So often people are just pumping products and showing how great they are with fish catches. You are more methodical and explain things to actually help people get on fish. Thanks for the vids man I just want to encourage you to continue with these types of vids.

Last spring fished multi species on the Chip from May 21 to May 27 out of Dun Roven Lodge. Looking back at my weather log book we had air temps ranged 36 to 48 degrees with wind and rain almost ever day. Water temps in the mid 40's in shallow waters. Never seen any action in any inlets or shallow water for any species the entire week. The weed mostly gone on from over draining from winter. On Day 3 fished deep 25-35 feet below the thermal cline and started to get walleyes, crappie, and panfish. Deep water was the only place we ever marked anything and caught fish. Our group has been fishing the Chip for 10 years on that same week. Usually fish are all spawned out and in shallow as well as extremely aggressive. Once we figured out they where below the thermal cline in deep water game on. I enjoy your vids. Shocked you only have 1.4k subs. Keep up the great videos.

Did you ever fish Winnebago chain? Would you recommend power bobbering and jigging raps?

I always generalized a lake and a river as two different animals, but haven't thought of a lake flowage. As I had a trip with my family just this past weekend at a new lake (Flowage off of the WI. river) we did horrible, fishing wise. We tried all of our confidence baits and various other technique(s) and to find a pattern and not a targeted range of species landed. The only fish we managed to land was a pike. The pattern I tested was to troll a bright colored mid diver crank bait I borrowed from my nephew. I figured, why not troll the wind blown flat where we marked fish in 10-14'. That was the most logical thing to do after we tried everything we knew, there was literally no structure that we could use to pattern what these fish were relating to, just a muddy and sandy bottom, with a strong current running along the outside bend of the lake. Wish I listened to this more before that trip, definitely got me learning and curious to try to fish these types of lakes again. Very unique body of water and technique(s) explained on these types of water. Thanks for posting this, always something new to learn and master.

You talk about trolling shallow for keeper walleye. Is that with lindy rigs and live bait or are you pulling plugs?

I know this is old but here's what I learned fishing a state with rising water levels every year. Low water is bad for long term fishing. In the short term the fish are more concentrated because there's less water and there will be less fish in the back bays and more out towards the main body of the lake. They tend to be easier to catch. It's bad long term because the bait fish cannot reach the previous years grass to spawn and lay eggs. Too many years of low water levels and The food collapse in the lake and the fish become even easier to catch because they always hungry. Lakes in which the water is rising is great long term. Also the fish will be in the newly flooded land no matter how shallow it is. Less will be in the main body of the lake. As soon as water levels start to fall, the fish sense this and migrate out the shallows. This held true for me on both a reservoir and a natural lake. I don't think fishing tactics change much other than location. My rule of thumb was if the lake was rising I would focus on back bays no matter the time of year. If the water levels were falling then I would focus on main lake structure.

Curious, you said walleye will spawn in deep water. Did you mean to say be in deep water during the spawn period or did you really mean they spawn in deep water? Did the hatchery tour with the family in your neck of the woods. DNR mentioned that walleye spawn in shallow water in gravel bottoms usually 1 to 6 feet?

Tom, I know you like jigging raps. Have you ever tried a shiver minnow? What's the difference between a jigging rap and a shiver minnow?
@TomBoley

+Gary Bowers don't have a lot of experience with the shiver minnow. I will have to try it this season. I know guys catch a lot of fish on those ad well!

Shiver minnow cast better. They don't foul up as often like jigging raps do when you cast them. But jigging raps hands down out fish shiver minnows when fishing vertically.
