The basics of how to fish small to mid-size mountain streams and rivers. Mountain stream fishing can be among the most rewarding of angling experiences. The fish are generally plentiful and eager to bite, the tackle and techniques required can be kept simple, and the beauty of the natural surroundings makes even a fishless day a success. Some of the basic principles that are covered in this video include:
- Fishing Tackle & Equipment
- Lure Selection
- Prime Fishing Times
- Reading Water
- Presentation

My go to is a small Panther Martin spinner. My brother, years ago refused to use anything but live bait or salmon eggs, saying they were better. The next time on our small stream I challenged him to a contest. One hour, and meet back with a count. I caught 27, he caught 10. He changed to the spinners and never looked back. Lest anyone think this is a fish tale, the stream had pools every 20 feet and nobody fished it except us. So the resident rainbows were not that shy. And yes, all were released.

I feel more relaxed just having watched your video. It reminds me that I have to get outside, into the woods or down by the shore. I have gotten too busy with the rat race and have become disconnected. Thanks for the reminder.

Excellent video John. The beauty of the area laced with great information was perfect .Thank you so much. When I was younger "Going Fishing" meant sitting by the stream and relaxing and being a part of the world around you and if you caught a fish it was a bonus.

I have been fishing since I was 2 years old. I love catching any kind of fish. The thing I hate is when I go trout fishing in New Mexico & have to spend $62 for an out of state license & only catch 3 fish!!!! They stock the rivers & the locals show up when they stock & snag most of the fish! So I paid $20 a fish for my fishing trip of 2 weeks!

I've heard that in mountain streams, the fish are almost always facing upstream, and therefore your presentation should be to cast upstream so your bait flows downstream. Any thoughts?

No mountain streams in our area, but I've looked closely into small streams in Colorado and was amazed at how many fish are hiding down there. They look just like the bottom of the stream from above.

Wow I hardly ever cast down stream. Usualy I cast upstream and reel in with just enough tension to keep the lure active and swimming in the water. I let it pass by me and kinda float downstream keeping enough tension for the lure to keep active and swimming still. Lots of times I get a strike just as the lure reaches the end of the line and turns suddenly. BOOM. got cha...

Love your videos John. Question for you---in these rocky streams, how do you keep the inline spinners off the rocks? I tend to stay away from them because I am constantly getting hung up on the rocks when I reel it in slow enough to entice the fish. I can speed it up to keep it far enough from the bottom, but then it is too quick for any fish to bother with it. Any advice?

This guy has no idea what he is doing...You do not fish downstream with a spinner...Trout face UPstream looking for food coming down to them...You don't reel a spinner up from behind them, you bring it down with the current...

+James Wise While this guy doesn't know what he's doing, neither do you because there are many times you can fish a spinner or streamer downstream and retrieve it back with great success... one of my main tactics when looking for larger fish lol.

I only fly fish now and have for 35 yrs .When I was younger I lived on the creeks and streams in WNC & SWVa. Using ultra-light rigs with 2lb test fishing Small panther martins, joes flys & even a rooster tail or 2 huntin Natives------- down and across is the most productive way to spin fish most strikes are reactionary-- in small pools however pulling one downstream works quite well (fish feel, see, hear that baby in the water).........BTW James can't say I've ever heard of your "Guide" service nor known a guide who would put a number on fish caught ...good try though
