Hands down, one of the easiest DIY tasks on the project so far. With a simple flat roof like this nothing comes simpler to fit than EPDM. As with everything, detail is key, so flashings and trims need extra care as that is where potential problems can occur. There will be more detail on those bits in the next roofing addition.

Absolutely loving your videos!! I have a flat concrete roof on an extension at home.. It gives no bother, and doesn't leak or anything, but I had been seriously considering this very job, just to tidy it up and make it look more modern looking.. This video has been a real insight!!! Thanks for all your posts 👍👍

Nice vid, helped me a lot. One thing I would suggest to anyone doing their own would be at the brooming / flattening stage just dampen the broom slightly, this helps it sheen the upper surface of the rubber and makes bubbles much easier to see ! Also helps the broom to glide. Hope this helps

I'd like to thank you for this video! I did my flat roof about the same time, and watched all of your videos on the subject before starting. Our roofs differ in that mine is a shallow tub with parapets that has copper scuppers thru the wall, and will have a deck supported by Bison Levelers when I can afford it 😉 -- flat roofs are pretty daunting to the newbie, but now that I've done it I would have no problem doing another!

We looked at all the possible options for our large flat roof (felt 🤦‍♂️, fibreglass, PVC) the EPDM was the most robust and simplest. We had quite a lot of detail areas (roof lantern and some weird corners) so got some pros in who were happy to work with us as additional labourers to save and learn at the same time. The results were great and the one thing they forget to tell you is it’s a fantastic sound deadening, so when the rain is heavy or hailing, your not deafened inside the building. Win! Great job by the way.

Pro Tip if you pull it halfway over itself, glue the entire half of the deck from edge to middle, then fluff some air underneath the top EPDM section and give it a little shove at the same time you can literally roll the half in in under 5 seconds. Rinse and repeat. A heavy gardeners lawn roller will help you also or a 6'' neoprene or steel roller. Also where the roof transitions into the wall you should use Russ strip or you should mechanically terminate at the transition then cover tape in order to prevent thermal bridging in that area. If you come back in 5 years you will see what I am talking about. One more thing, termination bar to attach to the wall at the top. Love the single piece keep the videos coming.

I've got a Victorian house in Brighton that I'm slowly working on and the flat roof above what will become our main bathroom has been leaking for years, although some repairs were made just before purchase. when I walk on the edge nearest to the wall and the next floor there is a definite spongy bounce. I think joists must be rotten, so plan to rip off felt, repair and replace with EPDM. If original joists I'm guessing likely to be 150mm. If so, I'm thinking warm roof is the way to go. My wife also says it would be good to be able to sit up there and I fancy a skylight. But may just be a straight forward repair for now. Was going to get the builder in, but with diminishing budget, might DIY or throw myself into the mix. Thanks for the video. Really helpful!

Good effort. Use a blowtorch to get rid of the creases by slowly going over them To heat them out And brush at the same time. Or.... Leave it lated out on roof or garden for a day or 2. Other thing is you can roller the whole roof with the waterbase. Let it dry until its transparent then role the rubber over it. This way you minimise getting any air locks.. And when pining the trims, don't knock them in tight. You need a bit wobble room for expansion of the trims.

I put my rubber4roofs epdm down 8 years ago. It is nothingshort of fantastic so far. Expensive compared to felt but much easier for the diyer to install. My tip, from experience, roll back don't fold back. If you fold back like a bed sheet like I did you can't put it back smooth. Rolling it back would have made it simple. Also - it's heavy. I couldn't lift it so I had to build a ramp and winch it up. 6m x 14m workshop.
@Carl-yu6uw
@Carl-yu6uw 2 жыл бұрын
Agree, rolled much easier to lay over adhesive. Being a saddo I was working alone on a 4m x 6m roof, so used a gutter downpipe as centre tube, having taped ends of the epdm to the tube first, then epdm rolled up tightly across whole width.

This should last about 5 years I am a property developer and I use a chap who's been doing this for over 25 years he gets a lot of work replacing what you have just put down he uses a plastic roll that comes with a life time guarantee I brought some of the rubber stuff to recover a flat wide valley but after a wile it felt a bit thin and it just the same as a bike inner tube so i rang the flat roofing guy back and he sent me a roll of what he uses and its a lot better I am not expert this is just my experience

Having lived and worked with EPDM flat roofing a while I encourage the builder or contractor to consider having a slightly sloped roof surface. While flat designs do work ...they work better with sloped flat. We've found that adding areas of added rigid foam insulation under the roofing insulation create a slope for BETTER drainage. You have a roof not a pond.
@tvs339

All three really. I mentioned in a previous video that a pitched slate would have been the best but only as it would have created some attic rooms. With a straightforward roof like this there isn’t really any failure points like joins or window flashings, but flat roofs can suffer issues if not pitched enough or not detailed well.

@@y.bother3804 Hi had a reply but can't remember if it was from a fibre glass company, it was a joining strip you had to put a load of sealant under and screw it down, but could not get any info to go over the fillet on the edge of the garage, so I just had it refelted. Hope this makes sense .

Not the worst system I’ve seen and it helped how straight the roof was,however this will never replace a hot application roof system I,e asphalt and felt in saying that it did look well 👍🏻

I used that membrane on my garage about 9 months ago. I used the 1.5mm membrane. It looks like you used the 1mm. But was it heavy. About 70lg. Straightforward to put down and one thing I've noticed is that it must the garage quite warm.
