Part 1 of my guide to fitting motorbike throttle bodies to a car engine as I do the same, trying to do it as cheaply as possible! I go through each activity and decision to show you how!
I fit Honda Fireblade throttle bodies to my autotest mini with a 1600cc Vauxhall engine to get the BRARP BRARP noise and, if we get it right a bit more power, MO'POWAH!!!!
As mentioned, if you are interested in Fusion 360 then check this guy out : -

Hello from N.E. Italy 🇮🇹 (an expat married to an Italian lady ;-) and YOU my friend have just given me a great idea!! I’ve an ‘01 2dr Fiat 1.2L Punto ELX I bought from its og owner…my mother in-law!-) It’s done 160k and has served my family well. It’ll be my 3rd car in the stable so now I can mod it. It’s 860kg (light by today’s standards) corners very flat, and really revs fairly quickly up to 120kmh (fine for non ‘A’ road running). THESE ITBs however I think will be the secret sauce!-) Reliability, lower cost build and retain the ability to pass bi-annual inspections 🤓🤩🥳

Your voice is quite soft while the music and such is loud, What I really want to hear is your voice. This is good stuff and I don't want to miss any of it. Fusion 360 changed and I have lost vast amounts of work due to their lousy clowd storage and removal of any useful storage local file types. I tried design spark, MUCH easier to learn and free as well with local storage. Too bad, I liked fusion... I am interested in how well the printed parts hold up under the hood in real world situations and how well the prints hold together. I have been using bosch K jet injectors, an all mechanical system they used on vw rabbits and can support around 200 HP. It has lasted 30 years. The intake runners were made from white drain pipe and the fuel lines are steel wrapped ptfe line (do this at your own risk!) The K jet can build 190 psi fuel pressure if something goes wrong and everything has to be able to hold up. Fire suppression is a must. The engine bay needed a paint job anyway.

Will the 3d print stand up to the heat over time? Have you considered using the 3d print to cast an aluminum part?
@MakingforMotorsport

It’s a great question and where most of my thoughts have been. I have a couple of plans, first I am just gonna give it a go with nylon to find out, then I may try some Polycarbonate as a spacer plate which has a higher usable temp, 3rd option is exactly as you suggest, but casting isn’t something I can do... yet!
@emmajacobs5575

A lot of OEMs use plastic inlet plenums, so if equivalent materials are available, there's no reason why they shouldn't work as 3D printed pieces.
@MakingforMotorsport
@MakingforMotorsport 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Emma, they do and Glass fibre Nylon is a common material but it’s the how it’s made that’s the difference, injection moulding gives much better strength characteristics than 3D printing and there are many blends of Nylon, some are more temp resistant than others... All that said, I am with you, it should work, and if there are issues we should be able to design around them! Only way to know, give it a go!

@MakingforMotorsport
@MakingforMotorsport 3 жыл бұрын
Hmm... I have never had to change that, but had a think and I would likely keep them close to the injectors and butterflies. If the connections are for idle air then it will provide some mixing, if for MAP it will give the smoothest pressure signal (especially if you have an aggressive cam) so needs smaller plenum. Best of luck with your project! Let me know how it goes!

I thought of going down this route many years ago but was naive at the time not knowing how the ignition would work with the setup. I actually went and bought a set of R1 carbs but never got round to do it. I still currently have the Astra GSi XE, And would love to fit the SBD throttle bodies but the cost man! How much would your R1 setup costs and what power gains? I have mildly tuned the XE, so the SBD Would definitely take it well over 200bhp. How about the R1 gains? I’m not very familiar with how the ignition works with carburettors. But the SBD straight to head kit includes ECU standalone and will take a standard 150bhp up to 208 according to dyno runs. Mine has to be 170 with its current cams and inlet and exhaust modifications. Any thoughts? 3.5k on a specialist throttle body kit, or half that price on R1 carbs?
@MakingforMotorsport
@MakingforMotorsport 3 ай бұрын
Aaahh the C20XE 😍😍😍…. A hell of a lot of work has been put into those kits so they just work, and if the engine is healthy, then the power is pretty much guaranteed (bear in mind, it probably requires a different exhaust manifold as well, which you have to make or source to their design). But it’s not witchcraft, and the well designed manifold with the R1 carbs or other motorbike ITBs Will free up breathing which will make more power (and a great noise as well 😉). Which would I do? I would do the bike throttle bodies. Because I have done it before and I have the means to do it. Which should you do? That depends on money, ability to have the car off the road whilst you develop it, practical ability to get it done or have someone do it for you, Do you want to faff about with it? Plus the elephant in the room of how you control spark. When you take away the airflow meter your normal ECU would use? What would I suggest? Have a look at Bogg Brothers or danST as they’ll both do inlet manifolds for the engine will guide you to what carbs or throttle bodies are right (or make them?) and look at what ignition system makes the most sense for you (I ran my speeduino in spark only for awhile) Best of luck , let me know how it goes👍

@MakingforMotorsport
@MakingforMotorsport 3 жыл бұрын
Port spacing is always a problem as bike engines by their nature are generally smaller but it shouldn’t be main driver of choice, that should be airflow and therefore the diameter.. Generally power = airflow through the engine so picking throttle bodies off a bike with similar power to that which you want to achieve is good starting point... if from that pool you can match port spacing for straight runners then bingo, otherwise you’ll just make up the difference in the manifold as smoothly as possible...

This is not to be critical ,it is an observation based on collective information gained and peoples mistakes that were rectified. From what i've learned so far from triumph spitfire forums on EFi conversions the TB needs to be matched to the intake tract of the original,spitfires using twin SU HS4 carbs switching to individual TB or single TB and plenum that have a throttle plate/choke size that is too big,get all pedal response in the first few cm even mm of pedal travel,the TB used here "look" a bit big,though choke sizing as per weber carbs would restrict air flow to a wider pedal movement/throttle range. As for the fabricated runners for non 3D printer makers,you can use aluminium tube bends or straight tube as per need,and need not weld;hard soldering rods wrongly called aluminium brazing rods(soldering process expands parent metal pores to fill with filler rod medium,whether lead/tin ,brass or ally alloy) this method seems from what i've seen on youtube to be more than strong enough,all tubes need to fit inside flange plates for max strength. I'd like to tig or mig weld the ally but pure argon is not cheap,and as only a blow torch that can heat to 700 degree C is needed and a stainless wire brush,a whole host of ally goodies can be made now,even fill in rivet heads and smooth to look like button rivets. If i can get a few of the disposable argon bottles for the gas/gasless welders i can tig or mig,only if i can get it cheap enough though and i am still biased towards the hard soldering with a small head torch to minimise heat spread distortion.

Hi, this itb Is for 1.0 engine but Is good for 2.0 liter engine?
@MakingforMotorsport
@MakingforMotorsport 3 жыл бұрын
Pretty much, it’s all about airflow and remember, that 1 litre engine revs to 13000 rpm and makes 170bhp! Airflow and Bhp are pretty much directly related so it’s as good a guide as any!

Is it a Vauxhaul Cavalier motor?
@MakingforMotorsport
@MakingforMotorsport 2 жыл бұрын
It was in the Cavalier, the 1.6 would’ve had an older version of this engine, c16sv maybe and this is the z16se which I have is a modern equivalent with some emission bits in it…

Could you have sent the final manifold design off to a metal 3d printing supplier?
@MakingforMotorsport

I could have and I'll be honest I don't really know how much it would cost, but it's likely more than I'd want to pay 😂 (but I am cheap!) I might get a quote at some point just to know....

I can't put it on here as KZfaq will delete it. It's on the channel page on the "about" tab and you have to click a "View E-mail Address". You need to view it on a desktop, mobile won't work.

Hello. Great work, but I guess you can face some problems with 3d printed manifold I guess. There could a problem with layers overlaying during printing and you can get a lot of leaks of air through layers. I`ve seen almost the same situation in kzfaq.info/get/bejne/h9tnbNmGx8m8c4k.html (timing is important). Just FYI. I`m not experienced with 3d printing.

Hi, just watched that video! He’s doing great stuff, thanks for the link! He is using a different 3d printing tech than I plan to, I will use FDM (Fused Deposition Modelling) with Nylon but it’s all an experiment so we’ll find out together! I have my tests done and bought a couple of the bits I need so I am about to start putting it all together!

What about using the 3D print as filler with 1 layer of CRP inside and out? That would be surdy and heat resistant. Not to mention light.
@MakingforMotorsport
@MakingforMotorsport 3 жыл бұрын
@@edwincolon7782 it’s a great idea, I did think about coating it in a resin or something and just using the print as a buck or former, and there are plenty of epoxys out there which will do it, I am just trying to work with what I have at the moment. Honestly I don’t know if it will work but I am happy for it to fail but I won’t give up! Thanks for watching, I am working on part 2 now!

@@MakingforMotorsport Hey mate, great video! I'm in the process of installing a dual carburetor on my Opel Kadett C 1.2L. I 3d printed a manifold I designed out of PLA and plan on casting it in aluminium using the lost PLA casting technique. I also use an Ender 3, does yours print nylon fine in stock form? I don't have an enclosure for my printer yet. I've got a few kilograms of polycarbonate filament lying around, do you think that would be up for the job?
@MakingforMotorsport
@MakingforMotorsport 3 жыл бұрын
Hi there! Check out my other video on printing CF Nylon with a Ender 3, minimum mods. Having printing other warping material (ABS,ASA) and I doubt your chances with PC without an enclosure (i mean you’ll also need an all metal hot end and to reflash your firmware to get above 260!). That said, I haven’t tried PC yet, it’s on the list! Have a go and let me know!
