How to fix a chainsaw that won’t start

Cheap homesteading Is working on A stehl MS 290. In this video he’s going to go over what you have to look at if you have a chainsaw that will not start. If you have a chainsaw that won’t start most times it is very simple problem but in this video he will go over the most common problems. This will work with makes of chainsaw stehl, Husqvarna and cheaper Home owner chainsaws.

Thank you for your video and advice. For my two saws I used to believed that starting the chainsaw depending on an acceptable proportionality of variables that includes (cusswords said at the saw, blaming someone else for misusing the saw) while pacing around the saw with hands on hips while looking up. It's almost like casting a spell. Thanks for the video

Thanks! I have a chainsaw, but found an MS271 on the curb on trash day and picked it up. Turns out everything works well but the compression is about 70. Seems like a fun project.

The 290 is a good saw. I bought one used, it was about 2 yrs. old no issues. Until it fell off my trailer, run over by the trailer wheel on our cottage road, going down hill 6mph. Cracked cowl and summer, winter screen. Still runs! But I bought a MS 291 as it was on sale as parts get rare. Now the farm boss will be my back up saw when I get in a "pinch". That happens at times, and then oh fun. BTW Stihl has a new hand sharpener out, works really well! Just make sure it's the proper size for the chain. Also run high test gas and Stihl oil as it has stabilizer in it. Take care.

Clogged fuel tank vent filter is another reason they won't fire up. My Stihl MS 192TC has 90psi and runs great.

If you add Sea Foam to your gas in the fall it will most likely start in the spring, if you don't it most likely will not without umping the gas and using fresh. I've been looking after a bunch of 4 stroke Hondas for many years.

I have a husky 141 chainsaw there is spark, fuel and I have done a carb clean, but it will not start now I have looked in the inlet and outlet and the piston looks brand new, but on my compression test I’m getting lower that yours, so is there crank seal or woodruff keys on the flywheel

I cleaned my carb (MS250) reinstalled, and it ran great. Shut it off and it won't start. I bought a new carb. Same thing, cranked on the first pull , shut it off and it won't crank now

It’s possibly could be your crank seals if it only does it when the saws warm. If you remove the carburetor, there’s a little pulse hole make sure that that isn’t plugged. You can gently blow back through it with a blow gun. Hope you get a runing better.

This is the only video that suggests compression as a possibility. All the others are amateurs.

Best video. Everything he showed is dead on. Need compression tester though. But you should be able to hold saw from pull cord but new models have compression release button.

I probably will start tapping the last week in February. Where I live it tends to be at least a week or two behind the guy taping in New York State. Hope you get your chainsaw running man
