Using reclaimed, reused and donated second hand materials I rebuild a stock fence for a farm used by a local young farmers club for under 300 dollars! This video follows the week or so of after hours work I put in to repurpose a paddock to safely house sheep. During the week I remove and repurpose the old fence wire, drive in steel posts, build end assemblies, hang a gate, strain sheep mesh, run out and strain up new wires. I ended up having to get one roll of sheep mesh to replace a badly damaged section. I also used 10 gripples, 700m of 2.5mm plain wire and purchased a small pack of staples. All this cost about 300 dollars in total. All posts were old raspberry trellis posts, which I had to cut and reseal. Most of the sheep mesh was reused and clips to the posts were fabricated out of plain wire. There are links to specific videos on all of the knots used in this episode.

so good to see how more aussies get it done! it's boring seeing so many videos with people and their perfect scenarios on perfectly mown grass with brand new materials. like you said, so many of us are building what we can with what we have, and if you do it well, the fence will last decades and you'll probably have to repair it a few more times in it's life. even treated pine is a luxury over here, we're still on the old school hard wood split posts and big round posts for strainer posts.

My Father, his prize boar could not perform, the vet found a fencing staple in his back foot, had gone all nasty and septic. Every time father and fenced we had a bucket for staples and short wire and of course I had the boar story.

I've rescued a couple of railroad ties and telephone posts from pasture and just buried them upside down. For treated pine, I still paint them with a 50/50 diesel and used motor oil mix.

Like your channel mate , I 'm a big believer in reusing old fencing materials i 've retrieved km's of posts ,ringlock,barb steel posts , steel end assembly 's pine strainers over the years the years and even burnt wire ( still get at least 10 years out of it ,especially away from the coast) its amazing what is discarded when cockies go crop only theirs pros and cons like anything if your got the time or a helper that is capable of working with old wire , wages being quite high you need to get the fence up quick before cost blow out , still I think its darn near criminal when I see materials that are not even half-way through life time in landfill, that's the situation in south East WA at least .R

I know you don’t like them mate but I’ve found that gripples are invaluable for fixing very old fences, as the old wire becomes very brittle, tying conventional wire knots under strain will almost always result in snapping the wire or at least a messy knot, where a gripple allows you to put maximum strain on an old wire as it’s pulling straight with no bends without risking snapping it. Give it a go and let me know what you think. I’ve also found if your worried about gripples letting go (I’ve never had one do it), put 5 tight twists in the wire after the gripple and no chance of it happening. Cheers mate great video
@coen555
@coen555 5 жыл бұрын
@@FarmLearningTim I don't know how I'd fence without gripples. I avoid them at every opportunity but If a mesh strain is under 60 meters, you lose to much strain when letting off the wedge lock clamp. I also use them for tensioning wallaby wire footer or with plain wire strains less then 10 meters. I work with a lot of small property's though, I'm sure it would be quite different on the big expanse of the mainland. Btw I also twist off my gripple ends, one flush and the other with 2-3 inches loop so the tool can still be used but it will never slip far or stab anyone.

Tim Thompson totally agree with that philosophy, good skill to be able to fix a fence in the middle of no where with a set of strainers and pliers... love your videos mate keep up the good work
@gunsandgear2689

Coen I find when straining up hinge joint in 100 meter sections, tie it off on both ends first without strain so you can get both ends knots even, cut it in the middle of the fence and strip off two verticals off each side then put chain strainers on top and bottom of hinge joint to take up the slack and use gripples to join it back together under tension. That way you end up with even knots on both ends of the fence, an even strain in the whole fence and if you do it right, where you join with the gripples will be the same size square as the rest of your fence
@gunsandgear2689
@gunsandgear2689 5 жыл бұрын
The reason I prefer that over the hinge joint wedge strainer thing is that you have to tie one sides termination knot under tension which is a pain to do nearly, and like you mention, loose too much strain in a short tension and usually get an uneven tension
@coen555
@coen555 5 жыл бұрын
@@gunsandgear2689 You can get that god awful bow in the verticals if you strain it traditionally. That's why I was avoiding mesh with different top and bottom wires. I don't mind tie'ing off under tension though, just make sure your chains are located on the post wisely, and remember to flatten the wire coming out the back of the clamp. I think the clean look of not having gripples and the money saved is worth it.

Just want to say I'm enjoying the video's Tim. I've got some old fence I need to fix (as the neighbours an arsehole and lets his cattle run riot). This is perfect as we both don't want to spend money on it (him because he's a prick and me because I don't want fund his cattle). I also wanted to get up to speed on new stuff to use as well. A couple of things with second hand stuff - Treated pine posts you can just turn upside down and reuse if the bottoms were still OK. - Ringlock you can do the same and run it upside down from how it was originally installed and just run a plain wire in place of the rusted part. It's good to see real scenarios like this, unlike a lot of the American stuff with perfect flat ground and quite frankly, over engineered end posts tied up with their dodgey animal mesh and staples.

I think I need to steal you to do my small horse yard. As a female, I wouldn't be able to do this. I'm trying to learn as much as I can from all your videos to do it myself. On my own I think this is impossible. 😢 I use polywire but they are freying. And snapping. I don't really like to use wire. I've seen the damage it's caused to some horses. Not nice. Maybe mesh might be the go, I don't know. My solar energiser has fried so I'm having problems right now. Waiting for new one to arrive. And my star pickets are loose. All the rain we have had have loosened them out of the ground. It's awful. My horses keep getting out 😢. Need to get really long star pickets I think. Thanks for all your education. I'm enjoying learning everything about fencing. Just have to try and implement your techniques and hope I do it right. Otherwise, I'm kidnapping you for a few hours😂😂😂

@@FarmLearningTim I'm going to buy the thunderbird thundercord. Equirope. It's 3.5ml I think. My polywire is way too thin. I'm not really a fan of wire. I have a mini and he's fine with electric fencing but without it he's challenging that bottom wire. My bottom strand is wire for my earth. Scared he's going to hurt himself. Thanks again for your advice. Taken all of it on board. 😁

Loved the video mate, 16:55 why do you strain the top wire like this, i just tie it off on one end and then strain it straight off the endpost and then do a termination knot - is that wrong? Also how do i stop the sheep mesh losing tension when straining my top wire. Thanks

What do you find the benefit of straining the plain wire in the middle and tying a strainer knot? I have always strained to a post and finished with the termination knot. Unless taking up a few centimeters on an existing wire, then I strain wire to wire and crimp. Another good video Tim, Keep it up!

@@FarmLearningTim Love the old Hayes strainers. The first one I grab for anything besides putting on the wedge lock clamp. The short chains super handy for strainer assemblies and such but I use it with a new 1.5m hooked chain otherwise. Feeding the chain through the cam will kill it eventually. I give it another click before tying off to posts, rarely lose more than half a click on plain wire. Looking forward to the next video Tim.
