Great little machine if you can find one. Straight stitch and zig zag only. Two stitches. Hence the number 2. The Deuce. This one sat for a long time unused. Wouldn’t feed the fabric. Now it does.

I bought a 385-1249380 this weekend that had the issue of feed dogs not working. It was never used and sat dormant for decades. After watching your video, I was able to get the machine humming! Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with us.

Thank you so much for this video. I was looking everywhere for help with the feed dog issue on my vintage Kenmore and all I could find were articles telling me to clean the bobbin casing and wiggle the reverse switch otherwise take it in. I was able to watch your video and see how the internal parts needed to move together and then see in my own machine that the part on the shaft that should have been laying flat against the part that lifted the feed dog mechanism had slipped. So I was able to loosen the grub screw and move it back into place before giving everything a cursory clean and oil. I had almost given up on figuring it out after a long and stressful day of trying everything I could think of. Maurice the beast lives to sew another day 😂.

I have a Kenmore 158.17850 that sat for a long time with an older family member, then it was given to me. It was a little rough at first, but following the instruction manual, I cleaned it and oiled it where it said to. It has worked great for probably a year and a half now, but then one day the feed dogs were up when I sat down to sew and now I can't get it to work right. I can push them down, like you showed in the video, but they stay up after they come back up. This video helped me understand what I think is wrong, but I can't find anything about my specific model so that I can see where to oil, and I was hoping you might have a picture or a video that I missed.
@randyyoursewingmachineman99548 ай бұрын
All those machine models are similar in that malfunction, when they’ve been sitting unused for a long time. It doesn’t need oil at first. It needs penetrating oil. Big difference. Follow the video suggestions and spray the penetrating oil into the critical areas. Work the feeders up and down until they’ll function properly.

I’m having this issues with a kenmore 158.19800 (its a drop in bobbin)… I tried oiling under but still having the same issue with the feed dogs not dropping down… do you have any videos to help with that?
@randyyoursewingmachineman9954Ай бұрын
I certainly do. Here’s the “cliff notes” version: oil the feeder assembly and work it up and down manually until you feel you can’t do it any more, then do it for another 100 times. Not fun, but eventually effective. Good luck. 🍀

My feed dog is still not going up and down the thing that moves it up down is not working at all, should i change that spring?
@randyyoursewingmachineman99546 ай бұрын
No. Your spring is fine. It’s lacking lubrication. Penetrating oil and patience. Oil it. Work it. Oil it. Work it. Once you get it moving, victory is around the corner.

I found “the deuce” at Goodwill yesterday and it’s not the feed dogs giving me a problem. It’s the hand wheel, when I disengage the knob, it will wind a bobbin, but the needle bar still goes up and down. Any idea how to troubleshoot that?
@randyyoursewingmachineman9954 Жыл бұрын
Sure. Take the hand wheel off and oil it. Then put it back together. I have a video on how to reassemble the hand wheel assembly. If it has old oil, or grease, or oxidation, use some steel wool to shine up the inside of the hand wheel and the shaft that it spins on. Easy peasy. 👍🏼😎

My wife bought a 385 this weekend and the feed dogs worked for a short time then stopped. I took it apart after watching your videos and found the lever the moves the cam back and forth between forward and back was gummed up. Cleaned everything up and oiled and got things working! Thanks!! When I removed the bottom cover I did find a small washer and retainer clip laying free inside. Any ideas? Again heaps of thanks for your help!
@randyyoursewingmachineman9954Ай бұрын
That small washer and retainer e-clip is what holds that return spring in place on the pivot stud. Push the spring and the mechanism back, put the washer on, then snap the clip in place to hold it all together
@onewayrickАй бұрын
Any chance I can send you an image of the clip & washer?
@randyyoursewingmachineman9954Ай бұрын
@@onewayrick is there a clip and washer on the end of the stud that the actuator lever is attached to?
@onewayrickАй бұрын
Yes that’s all good. The clip resembles a curved horseshoe, about the size of a nickel, flat, with small tabs at the end. Looks as if it goes around a shaft or somewhere around that cam…. That’s about the best description I can give ya. Not too worried at the moment about the washer, it may have come off the baseplate.

I just used a product on this to loosen any gunk even though the inside is pretty pristine. I’ll then put some sewing machine oil next to see if I get the up and down motion. It’s only going back and forth right now. So are you saying not to mess with the screen where the spring is? I have the 15358600. I might add that your video is the only one I could find that addresses this. Thanks for sharing your knowledge on this. Much appreciated.

Be patient with the process and don’t take anything apart. The machine just needs to be “limbered up”.

Hi Randy, thanks for this video. I have a Kenmore 385. 17624890 sewing machine. On the straight stitch setting and another stitch setting, fabric won’t feed. The feed dogs move up and down but not back and forth. On yet another stitch setting, fabric moves in reverse direction. Would these tips work for this issue? If not, can you help point me in the right direction? Thank you.

I left you my response on the other video that you commented on. It won’t be simple. They won’t respond to merely being oiled. You’ll have to work them up and down FOREVER and work the lubrication into the working parts. Then they will feed your fabric like new.
