Great work! Jelly of your o-ring kit. Mine went away a while back. Pneumatic stuff is tricky and new o-rings can be stiff and sticky. Your reassembly was dynamite! Now for that feed hose. 5yr old video still crushing it!

Thank you sir. I was getting ready to order a $170 new reel and I thought I would try to check out KZfaq. And there you were. Exactly what was wrong with mine. The original o-rings were flat hard plastic. Put some new rubber o-rings with a little silicone grease and no more leaks. Thank you again. You saved me $170!!

Thank you very much for posting this. I have just found a large leak at my reel, an enclosed Mighty-7 brand reel... I respectfully suggest you the following comments: 1) Never use common grease, oil or hydrocarbon paste on any elastomer or rubber, as most rubbers are slowly degraded by the oil and grease. It is much better to use Synthetic type of paste that is Silicon based, I like 3M Silicone Paste, 8 Oz, 226 g. Part 08946 at Amazon 19.95 usd. That paste is much less aggrrsive to rubbers and elastomers, has very high temperature resistance and can be used even on brakes. 2) When installing O-rings, check that the groove or entrance to the place that will hold the O-ring does not have a sharp edge... if it has a "square" edge, try to slightly round it, to facilitate the sliding of the new (and uncompressed, thus larger) O-ring. otherwise, the metal edge can produce some tearing of the soft elastomer material, and that slight rounding helps to "funnel" the O-ring into the tight place. Best wishes.

I have this same hose reel, it started leaking and this video was very helpful in fixing it so thanks for posting! I went to Lowes and bought the #9 O rings and silicone grease, these #9's worked great, stopped the leak!

Just a note: -112 is a US o-ring size not a metric o-ring size. The trade size is 1/2 x 11/16 w/ a 3/32 cross section. Actual dimensions are .487 x .693 x .103. The oring in the swivel is actually likely a metric oring. The dimensions are 2.5mm X 17 OD. However, when you convert to inches that's pretty close to a -112: .472 x .669 x .098. A bit tighter but maybe that will help!

Based on measurements I took of the shaft and housing of my reel and recommended rotary seal parameters in the Parker O-ring Handbook, the correct metric size is 12.3 mm ID x 2.4 mm width. The AS568A-112 size looks like the closest standard option. The metric has better ID and resulting squeeze and a less severe groove fill. I ordered some of the metric ones and will see how they do.

Nice fix! I was sound asleep the other night and got woke up by the noise of a motor running. I usually remember to shut my compressor off at night but the one night it didn’t, it ad a leak that got real bad and the thing ran non stop until I got up and went to the shop to turn it off. Man that pump was smoking hot!!

Thanks for the O-ring replacement video. I just installed a HF 50 ft hose reel in the garage and love it. It's only a month old and I did notice a slight bulge in the new hose so I'm not going to replace the hose until it's shot. I haven't seen any hose replacement videos so I may have to make one when time comes for replacement. Have a fine week and Happy 2021 New Years.

Hose replacement is pretty easy. Just pull the hose all the way out. Might want to use some vice grips to gold the hose from winding back in until you can change the hose. Thank you and happy new year to you as well

Thank you for the video! I had an air leak in the exact same spot and also had bought both the metric and American o-ring sets like the one you have, over 30 years ago. The fix took about 10-15 minutes and it works great! Thanks again. ;0)

Thank you for posting this video! My reel that I have had for over 10 years , use several times a week, and replaced the hose 4 times just sprung the same leak. I was going to spend $100 on a new reel and found your video. One thing that I also found was that one can simply use Danco #9 5/8" od x 7/16"id x 3/32" Part 96726 available from Lowes for $2.50. That, some good grease, and I am now good to go!

Appreciate the video. Have the same reel and the same leak. Replaced the 2 o rings and everything is good again. The old o rings were brittle and hard and fell apart while removing them. My reel is probably around 8 years old.

Thanks for the video. My fitting isnt leaking there but I think it definitely adds to the pressure drop so I was thinking of porting it out. Judging by the video it looks like there is room for improvement.

I'm actually upgrading to 1/2" air hose is the only reason I didn't mess with it more Thanks for watching. But great idea (just don't go to much you don't want to thin out the wall thickness to much or you will jeopardise the safety psi rating. Good luck hope it works for you.

Very good comment! Recently I've found that the "Z" figure hose swivel that I bought at Autozone was very practical and "good enough", until I bought a very nice and extremely compact impact gun that gets into tight places underhood... but it wasn' powerful enough for removing the wheel nuts in my car (Torqued to 100 ft-lb)... until I removed the swivel and used a shorter hose... then it was almost as powerful as a large Ingersoll-Rand gun... but I found that contrary to first sight, the small gun demands a greater instantaneous air flow! because its vane motor uses a lot of air as it is geared for more torque and turns at a higher speed! Thus, you need always to optimize pressure drop.

@2LateIWon
@2LateIWon 7 ай бұрын
I understand but if take advantage of the warranty while you can. Leaks will cause your compressor to run more often and longer. Your compressor is more expensive than the reel. But again I understand where you are coming from

Mine leaks brand new out of the box. O-rings are ok. There's scratches from poor assembly work that gives the air some grooves to escape from. I might try to smooth them out and polish it.

Believe it or not: I bought a Sears bench drill, made in China, of course. Kept it new inside its box for some months, and assembled it when I was needing it urgently, just to find it vibrating so badly as to make it useless... but worst thing was that the Quill had a LARGE built-in play, throwing out any precision! As the damn Sears store did not honor any warranty, I resorted to try to "save" the P.O.S. drill! So I took it to my good lathe shop and they made a steel liner to take away any play between the quill and cast iron housing. When I asked the very experienced lathe operator what he though about my perceived "lack of quality" at the damn chinese factory, I was surprised to learn that the excessive play was INTENTIONAL(!)... He explained to me that the production finish was "tops", like made with a good modern CNC equipment, but that the loose tolerances were ON PURPOSE to facilitate the hurried assembly, made by OLD or TOO YOUNG (Child!) labor on the ships that bring that merchandise from China to USA!... another great "advantage" of globalization! As for the vibration, it was the upper quill pulley being cast with core shift, and again, taking off the heavy side was easy at the lathe. I decided to never buy another Sears "Craftsman" tool again!

Thanks for taking the time to post this video - mine just started leaking after 18 years (only use once or twice a week). It looks like the same hose reel, slightly different rotating seal (must be the older version). Someone else claims that the outer brass ring wears out - which I doubt - so I will try your method first.

I have the same leak with CH, will address that, thanks for the video. A question thou, I bought a 1/2 inch hose(only hose) recently. I have a good 10ft from compressor to the place where reel is located, Can one run a 1/2in to the reel & have the reel as 3/8in for applications, will it give more power at the tools.?

Matt: Probably, you just could replace the original 3/8" hose with a larger inside diameter, shorter one if you don't really need the full lenght. I did that on my reel and found that now my impact gun and air chisel work much better, and that the shorter hose even when it forces me to carry my DeWalt compressor to near the work, it pays from better working tools!
