How to Fix a Major Timing Issue On Your Bow (Mathews Vertix)

The serving on one of my cables severed right before elk season! Thankfully I keep an extra set of strings and cables on hand. I decided to replace only the one damaged cable & yoke string. After swapping them out, I checked the timing on my bow only to discover my cams were WAY OFF!
I really hope this doesn't happen to you right before the start of a season but if you find yourself in this spot here is what I did to fix the problem at home. This fix is for archers that have access to a bow press and draw board.
I think every archer should learn some of the basics of working on their own bow. On hunts, I carry a field kit in my truck with serving, extra string/cables, a portable bow press, d-loop material, extra peep, rubber tubing, wax, glue, etc.
I still take my bow to a shop! I want to be able to work on my bows and fix issues as the arise but techs at your local bow shop work on bows year round and often can identify and fix issues more efficiently. Sometimes bow techs are pressed for time though and get things to a "good enough" spot but not perfect. When it comes to the final tune for your setup you really want to be self sufficient as the bow responds different in your hands than it would it mine. So paper tune and broadhead tune yourself after the bow shop gets you to that pretty close spot.
Working on your own bow can be a frustrating process as there is some trial and error involved. If you are willing to learn and do the work it can be quite rewarding. Having these tools on hand made it possible for me to fix the issue the same day and continue to make my final preparations for elk season.
If you are looking for additional help you may consider downloading the HuntLeague app. We have a growing community of people that are logging and sharing the stories of their hunt. It is an incredible platform where you can connect and learn from other hunters that are putting int he work. The app captures time stamps, GPS, notes, pictures, video, audio, and more in a digital hunting journal. Learn from every hunt and be better prepared for your next adventure.

With all the adjustments to the cables , now check your peak weight , I just added gas strings string and cables to my Phase 4 33 and found with all my timing adjustments , I found my peak dropped 5 pounds ....was a fairly easy fix by adding twists to the cable equally but something to keep in mind .

Thanks for watching. With taking twists in and out form different sides it stayed within about 3lbs. I didn't put it on the draw board before I started but I am pretty sure I had it set between 69-70lbs and ended up at 67.62lbs after timing everything up. I am happy with that on my setup but dropping pounds means losing speed which can lead to additional work swapping out sight tape or adjusting individual pins.

@@huntleague yes sir , anytime we make string changes or cable adjustments we basically have to re-tune and re-zero .

Thanks for this info. I’ll start with checking my timing. I’m starting over just before season opener as well. Something is off with my shots.

It's frustrating when something is off right before the season. My bow was pretty dialed in too before that happened!

to each there own I would have just done all new strings etc. I also do not draw my bows back in the same draw board your using without an arrow on it and seeing you stick your arm inside the path of the string with it at full draw is a bad idea I saw an arm get broke along with stitches from that d loop and the safety loop breaking. I wish you have showed how you where doing the twisting on the yokes. thanks for sharing man God Bless

That is super solid advice as there is so much stored energy in those strings, cables, and limbs. That was dangerous. Thankfully nothing crazy like that happened in this go around but I appreciate you pointing that out.

Hey there! I had to do the same thing. I had to replaced my string and cables but I feel more confident headed into the woods this year knowing my gear is in top shape. PS, I’m a fellow New Lifer. 😀 I’d love to meet you sometime!

Awesome! Love to connect with you sometime here soon. We typically go on Friday nights as Pastor Daniel has been a lifelong friend. Have you downloaded the HuntLeague app yet? Let's connect inside the app and find a time to go shoot at the Air Force Academy range here soon. Good luck this archery season!

I ran into this same issue. Make doubly sure you are wrapping your cable around the post in correct direction.

I might have missed it but did you show how how to adjusted the yoke string or did you edit that part out ?

When I sat down to fix the timing I figured it would take me just a few minutes. Talk about a long process in pursuit of perfection. For the yokes, you have to remove the screws, axle, top hats and pull the cam out to adjust. Typically that is not necessary unless you are replacing the yoke strings themselves. After those are set you really shouldn't have to adjust them. On older bows I did a lot more yoke tuning. You were looking for cam lean as the bow turned over. So you watched the timing and cam lean through the draw cycle and would perform yoke tuning so that your arrows weren't getting kicked out of the bow with a lot of side to side movement. You could compensate for some cam lean by nock tuning and adjusting your arrow rest. With newer bows the engineers have fixed so much of the yoke tuning and cam lean issues. You really need a draw board to watch the cams during the draw cycle to know if you are dealing with significant cam lean. In this video I mentioned making an adjustment to the yoke strings as I was struggling to get the timing right based on the cable lengths. Adding and removing twists in the cable obviously adds or removes length. Adding a twist in the yoke string had nothing to do with adjusting for cam lean but it was a desperate attempt to see if making a small adjustment there would finally give me that perfect timing I was after. In most situations I would avoid making any adjustments to the yoke strings in order to fix a timing issue.

What is that machine what you use making timing? Thank you

If we are talking about time travel my preferred machine is still a hot tub. For checking the timing on the bow I am using the LCA Last Chance Archery "EZ Press" with the LCA Draw Board. The draw board attachment is the one that lets you draw the bow back in a very controlled way. It is definitely the safest way to check your timing as I accidentally pulled the strings off the bow once at full draw trying to twist the bow to look at the cams. The whole bow pretty much blew up in my face. Really glad I didn't get seriously hurt on that occasion. Limbs ended up being fine but I destroyed a brand new set of strings. The Draw Board keeps everything in its track and lets you observe the mechanics of the bow. On one occasion I had a buddy bring me his bow where the timing was a total mess. I tried tweaking it several times before realizing the mods on his Prime bow were not set correct for his draw length. One was set to 30" and the other was set at 28". That is a problem you will never fix by adding twists to strings and cables.
