THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU ... out of all the KZfaq suggestions, yours is the one that worked!!! I used a bit of Vick's at the narrow end of the strap, pried open the clasp as you suggested and held the other end of the clasp tight with pliers and used the pliers to hold tight clasp & managed to slide a bit of the clasp and then it was a matter of working it upwards until it was fully gripping the strap.

PRO TIP: It's way easier to squeeze one end of the rail with pliers to flatten a small spot to load the clip. This is the only thing that worked for me and it's not noticeable in the slightest.

I had to use the combination of applying pressure with a plier on the adjustment track, Allen keys to force the plastic open, and boiling water to soften the plastic to put a replacement strap on my Gregory Deva 60. My fingers still hurt but at least it's on now. Thanks to everyone who chipped in with advice!

I had better luck clamping the rails with vice grips for a few seconds, then removing the vice grips. The rail stayed squashed long enough to get the clip attached. Screwdriver just mangled the clip.

Yes, this is definitely the way. Osprey provided a video for this on their packs, but the method applies regardless of brand. Not sure if YT will allow the link, so spelled out, it's vimeo dot com slash 316589417 slash 011a78d935. vimeo.com/316589417/011a78d935

TIP: use Hex Keys instead of screwdriver - choose one with thickness similar to rails. It is much easier to manipulate (flat sides, you can choose size that fit best, has no tip). Thanks for tutorial!

For those of you trying this with a screwdriver, do not use one with a large head. You’ll just damage your clip. Use something that barely opens up the plastic clip. A smaller screwdriver or even something like an Allen wrench. Just opening it a little will allow it to fit back on the strap. Good luck!

I did this and found that a very small allen wrench from a bike multitool set worked WAY better than a screwdriver. Screwdriver tended to stress and almost cracked the plastic piece. I think the 3mm size allen wrench worked best.
@colinsmith6540
@colinsmith6540 6 жыл бұрын
Dan Carlin how’d you get the wrench in the gap to open it?
@dgcarlin
@dgcarlin 6 жыл бұрын
I put the wrench straight into the tube part of the connector (no resistance here), and then rotated it upwards, until the wrench started to pry open the plastic gap -- eventually it will open enough that you can clip it onto the fabric rail of the pack. Still a delicate maneuver, but it wasn't too hard. Hope that makes sense!

Thank you very much for sharing this solution which I found to work much better than the screwdriver. I found it too difficult to keep the screwdriver on it's side while with an allen wrench that problem does not exist.

Thanks so much. I was able to get the corner on without using a screw driver if I pushed hard enough, but I didn't know you were supposed to slide it down to get the other corner of the clip attached as well.

I tried this and discovered that the metal in the screwdriver damaged the plastic - so a rather risky method that can leave you with broken parts. I ended up making a shim out of a popsicle stick that I could push through the plastic as it was entering the channel and with a little bit of exasperation that worked out well. What you need is the wide part of the shim at the end of the part so that as it slides into the channel, the shim is moving backward through the part. Plus since it's wood, it won't damage the plastic.

Yeah, fixed my Petzl Bug sternum strap with this method. Clamp opened just enough to start on the piping and slid right on as it slid off the screwdriver, very little effort involved. Thanks

I tried this. The screwdriver just made gouges in the plastic material. I was able to bend the strap back at the bottom of the piping and work the piece back on. The one I have is a CamelBak Octane 18L. The gouges from the previous attempts don't seem to be causing any problems (thankfully).

I don’t understand how this is possible. Been trying for an hour all I’ve managed to do is carve up the inside of the strap attachment from spinning the screwdriver.
@OCReefer
@OCReefer 6 жыл бұрын
Try using a variety of flat head screw driver widths, he doesn't mention it but too small or too big of a flat head will not wedge-open the attachment appropriately. Sounds like if you are spinning inside the attachment a slightly bigger flathead would be more helpful, just turn it until its jammed sideways in the opening, dont turn it passed that or you will end up where you started

I followed Dan Carlin’s advice. I used a 3-mm hex bit (Allen key). It was very easy and didn’t cut into/gouge the plastic material.

I first thought to soak the end of the clip in boiling water for 5 minutes to prevent the clip from breaking. Then I used quite a small screwdriver to open the clip enough to get the edge of the clip on to the rail. I muscled the rest of the clip onto the rail in a few seconds. I think because the clip was soft it went on easier and the screwdriver did not gouge the plastic. I did not have to crimp the rail first, which I though would damage the rail and the clip may come off again.

I managed to fix this super easily in about a minute after watching the video, using 2 hex bits instead. Started off with a hex bit that was just slightly larger than the gap of the sternum strap clip, slid it into the clip from the bottom in order to pry it open slightly. Then slid in the second bit, which was one size larger, and removed the first bit. Then angled the clip at about 45 degrees onto the rail, pushing the clip into the rail and assisting the hex bit along the length of the clip while sliding it onto the rail. This method should be less likely to damage the clip, since there are no sharp edges on the hex bits.

Found an amazing solution. used a small simple carabiner with a flat start and round same diameter that fits. pushed it a bit and to the center slowly. it fits. DON'T use a screwdriver, it will damage the plastic and those are hard to get. Somehow i needed to do a lot of DIY with my Kelty bag :\

I just fixed the issue but angling the clip, so one end is touching the strip and simply "sawing" the clip until it got a grip and pushing the rest of the clip in.

The screwdriver worked for me I had a North Face Terra Set 65 Lite. Unfortunately before this I had a kelty and I kinda tried something like this or along the logic and it didn't work then I tried to melt the plastic to make it malleable and then shape it back in following the same ish logic but it didn't work and just ruined the buckle But I took it back and refunded at Bob Wards for the TerraSet and I managed to fix that one so I guess it worked out ( I still have that Kelty so maybe I will try to order a replacement and then try this on it again.) Thanks for the video took me about 5 mins longer then it took you but that is alright lol

Horrible, horrible, horrible design. Edit: This piece is plastic. If you try to spread with a metal screwdriver, you run the risk of cracking / permanently damaging the piece. Kelty really needs to rethink this shitty design.

Terrible solution to an infuriating design. After trying this for ages (and doing plenty of damage to the plastic) I just fixed it super easily. THE RAIL/PIPE YOU CLIP IT TO IS METAL! Just flatten the bottom with pliers, slide it on, and reshape the piping once done.
