This is just what I was looking for! I just started crocheting hats for charity. Unlike knitted hats, crochet hats don’t have much of a stretch to them, and they sit rather loosely on the head. I think this elastic method will be the perfect solution to allow a bit of stretch while wearing, and to allow the hat to retain its shape. Thanks for sharing!

Thank you so much for this great tutorial!! I am not a crocheter however I have applied your technique on a wool hat that I just completed and found that the ribbing needed a little extra snug; and its worked beautifully! Ive done 3 rows, wasnt sure how to carry the thread between the rows hwoever..

Hello, thank you for the video. I know sewing a little so I was thinking about doing that to fix my son hat. I PRAY that I will achieve fixing it! I have naively stretched it by ironing it. I thought it was just a “regular hat” first I put it in the wash. It came out a little wrinkle then I decided to iron the edge. I couldn’t understand why my son was so upset about a stretched hat until I looked it to replace it. He told me it was a gift from his friend in college. The price tag is $285 (on sale). Oh my! I was an idiot on steroid because I wash and iron everything!!!! Now, he hides all his hats and sneakers from me when he is home from college. Thank you again for the tip!!!!

Thanks for this helpful tutorial. My problem right now is a single crocheted Disney-inspired princess hat with long braided “hair”. I did the gauge, all measurements are right on, however, the “hair” weight has stretched the hat too long. It was started at the top and done in rounds. This is for a 6-year old, but fits an adult. Do you suppose I could use elastic thread either horizontally every few rounds, or perhaps vertically? I hope someone can help. It is my Grandaughter’s Birthday gift for today.
@prettydarnadorable
@prettydarnadorable 2 жыл бұрын
Oh gosh I can totally see how that could happen. You may want to take a few rounds out flog it has also stretched length wise. Then do rounds with the elastic bottom up. I would think just 2-3 inches up the hat should fix the problem. Let me know how you make out and good luck!

I did a quick, but durable fix. The hat stretched 4 rows too long. Using a darning needle and matching yarn (doubled with a knot). From the inside, I counted down 4 rows from the top and did a running stitch, cinched it, tied it off. I was left with a little ball on top. This ball will help to raise the hat as well. On the outside, it is a cute, soft gather. I like it better than before, and her eyes will show. I’ll try to take a couple pics to send to you. Now to rest my brain. 😀

Thank you for this. I think, if we like to make hats, couldn't we include the elastic when we are done completing the project because you know those things are gonna stretch! I made my husband a hat and carefully fit it but within a week he started saying it was loose. So if I make him another at a later time, shouldn't we just include the elastic right away so we don't have to fix the project later?
@angelcso100
@angelcso100 5 жыл бұрын
Lisa, I totally agree. I always make a swatch before I make a hat but inevitably the hat stretches out. I always downsize my needles too -UGH. I also have wondered if knitting the rim with elastic added to yarn might work too. Hope someone sees this and can advice us. PS. I've also tried different cast ons and still have this issue.
@LisaN
@LisaN 5 жыл бұрын
@@angelcso100 I also read (but haven't tried it before) that because of the way Tunisian crochet is worked, there is a lot less stretch. May be something to try! But I am ordering some clear elastic to work in because my husband said that was his preference over the other options I gave him. I also saw reduce the needle size etc. But if you're saying that still stretches then I will just work elastic in all the time then.
@LisaN
@LisaN 5 жыл бұрын
Okay I tried it but only after one row it was too tight for my husband. I'm gonna be trying something else. Instead of stitching around I may weave the elastic straight around and see how he likes that.

Hey JD I am not sure of the exact thickness but I think thicker is better but bear in mind that you don't want the elastic showing once it has been sewn. So not too thick.
