Thanks for posting!! I've been looking for a way to fix mine. I do have textured tile flooring in the bathroom (thanks to the previous owners 🙄) instead of a flat floor to work with. Do you have any modifications to this process you could suggest to account for that? Or will the type of flooring matter?
@thebestblainejohnson2 жыл бұрын
Figure out and mark your placement and depth on your shims before removing the toilet to replace the ring. The reason for this is that even with a new ring, if you set the toilet down on it, it will over compress the ring, then lifting it back up on the shims could break the wax seal and cause another leak.
@jasonhill15202 жыл бұрын
Hey winni you should leave the toilet loose enough that the toilet can clamp down on the shims after shoving them under. Great job leaving the weep spot at the back.

Don’t be afraid to use different seal instead of a wax, if toilet really wobbly. The wax seals can compress and move blocking flow on a severely wobbly toilet, and so; using a Rubber, Foam, Plastic, or Hybrid would be my choice instead; and might need some closet flange extensions as well. Not supposed to use wood shims. In residential caulking the base is optional. Depending on the flirting sometimes absence of caulk looks better and other times the caulking leaves a really clean look. I have shimmed a toilet before, but if it wobbles more than a little, or the shims move and the wobble comes back, remove the toilet and see what's going on. Chances are, the wax ring is coming loose and you'll end up with a quality leak. If it's on the 2nd floor, guess where that water ends up.

All these people in the comments think that if you caulk it there will be extensive damage lol I've been caulking toilets for years, leaving the back like shown here not caulked. The amount of urine and dirty mop water, etc. That gets under there and sits is disgusting. Depending the size of the leak, even if it's not caulked there can be extensive damage either way. It makes no difference. If the toilet is installed right, and everything is good with the hardware, that toilet should last YEARS without a leak. That caulk isn't going to change anything. This is coming from someone who has caulked 100s of toilets. Never had one issue. Only thing I wouldn't do, is use wooden shims. I use plastic shims. But other than that, it comes down to preference. Plus, It gives the toilet a cleaner install look!

On a concrete slab maybe on a plywood never. I went to a diy where they had put sheet vinyl on the floor. Well there was a leak and the silicone hid the leak even with the back not caulked.....well he husband weighed about 350 and 6 3. He sat down , the PVC flange and pipe broke. The toilet sank, a broke the line inside the wall. Then the city had wifi meters and when water meter cover had not been removed in years. They had to search for an hour to find the buried water meter. By the time the city got there I had been called. I crawled under the house with one or those temporary clear PVC cap assembly and put it on the main supply. Many people don't know they make PVC shark bite fittings. They are for temporary use that the reason the company makes them transparent. I finally got Lowes to start stocking them because in Mississippi we don't have much experience with frozen pipes and these regular PVC quick connects are good to get a customers water back on and move to the next one and come back for a permanent repair later.
