How To Fix Broken Defective Left Analog Stick - Nintendo Switch Pro Controller
This is an easy DIY solution to fixing the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller if you end up buying one used or don't have the warranty anymore. I made this video as a noob to soldering to show how easily it can be fixed after not seeing any videos for the Pro Controller specifically. I ended up getting this controller really cheap off of craigslist and was inspired to repair it by watching My Mate VINCE's Trying to Fix series.
Here are what I used in the video:
Soldering Iron Kit: amzn.to/2PEDhvd
Electronic Repair Kit (optional): amzn.to/2QjVsDG
Precision Screwdrivers: amzn.to/2SGb06l
Rosin Paste Flux: amzn.to/2QkL2Ul
Wick(copper braided wire): amzn.to/2yT7rl3
Analog Replacement: goo.gl/onYnvG
Analog Replacement(if above is sold out): goo.gl/jVo4ec
(there are also cheaper alternative if you search locally):

Monitor Stands: amzn.to/2VxRuNt
Webcam: amzn.to/2IN2b8T
Main Camera: amzn.to/2DD3eUX
Microphone(streaming/voice over): amzn.to/2XRN8OP
Microphone 2(music): amzn.to/2DGJoYW

Use the soldering iron to heat up pin & melt solder straight on. When lifting off the iron, the solder should flow nicely around the pin. If you need to paintbrush the solder, it hasn't heated enough. Good job for first time

I was going to say the same thing, but I was 7 months too late to the video :P Convention is to always heat the joint, because once solder melts, it tends to stick to the hottest thing, so when the iron is hotter than the pin, that's how you get bubbles on your joints.

Thank you VERY much for the video. Google was nearly helpless with this as most folks solutions (compressed air/calibrating) wasn't what MY issue was. This is MY issue. I actually had the controller disassembled when I found this video, which was made in the past few hours. Only issue: the costs of fixing equals the cost of buying a new one based off the links provided. If I had the gun, paste, and other things then it'd just be basically $13 and a few hours of labor. Instead....I must now wait for a sale as I'll (probably) never use those materials again.

Tip: Add more leaded solder to the old unleaded solder (because the lead free solder needs a higher temp to melt) Also adding solder to your tip when using the braid helps conduct the heat from the tip to the braid resulting in better wicking

I have 3 Pro Controllers that all got drift at about the same time a year ago, which was just on the cut off for the warranty, and now my joycons have started, so I’m gonna fix them all at once (As a silver lining, I have an excuse to reskin the controllers). Thanks for the video, been wanting to learn how to properly solder for awhile. I just learned how to connect wires in a high school engineering class.

ALTERNATIVE!!! Instead of replacing the ENTIRETY of the analog stick, shift focus to the green portions of the stick itself. These are the sensors. They're the potentiometers that tell the controller to what degree the analog is being moved. What one can do with NO need for soldering, wicks, pumps, etc... is to GENTLY bend back the green portions from the stick's metal housing. They're clipped in so you'll need to be firm, but GENTLE. you don't want them to break. Once pulled back, you can pop out the disc shaped sensor. Clean it with a Q-tip and some rubbing alcohol as well as the green housing it was pulled from and place it back in. Reassemble just enough to where you can power it on and navigate to the calibration settings and test it. In all likelihood, the problem will have been fixed! In some occasional instances where it is STILL not working properly, then the sensor "disc" may be damaged. Fortunately, if you have a busted controller sitting around and is a "parts" controller, you can steal the sensor from it and use it for the Pro Controller. Doesn't matter the controller. It could be another Pro Controller, an XBOX One controller, a DS4 controller, 360, DS3, etc... What I've laid out is exactly what I've done for "drift" issues and it's always worked out for me.

Will it work if I replace the entire stick with another one ripped off a PS4 controller, or there’s a compatibility inside the whole stick? Because from what I can see the replacements seem just to look all the same item (Xbox one, PS4 or switch pro controller)

Great work. I think the only feedback I'd offer is, drown that thing in flux, and keep desoldering until the component basically just falls out. If you have to use force, it's probably because there is still solder holding it down, and you might pull a contact or trace off the board. Otherwise great job man!

Not bad, technique-wise. I'd recommend watching how long you continue applying heat when soldering to pads. Depending on how hot you're going, you might life the pad. If that happens, it doesn't necessarily mean it's bricked. You can either scratch some of the coating farther up the trace, or you can follow the trace to another pad and add a jumper wire. Both are hacks, but nobody will ever see it, and it might save you $80. Also, check out harbor freight for cheap tools like vises and plastic welders and soldering irons. They're not high enough quality for daily abuse, but they'll definitely do a good job at least once for cheaper than renting it at home depot.

Make sure you keep the tip of your soldering iron tinned. It helps conduct heat and means a quick touch of solder is all you need. There are plenty of vids that'll explain it much better than I can here.

I find that when soldering, you want to be pretty quick or else you get those ugly stringy bits when you pull away your iron. It’s because the flux in the solder melts away pretty fast. Also, you can damage the board if you use too much heat for too long.

I did the same with two layers of electrical tape. Fixed it as well. it makes me think the issue is with the position of the stick allowing it to go to far. I think heat shrink would be better if I can find a thick enough piece that is also big enough to go around the top of the stick.

Is your stick snapping to the x and y axis in the calibration? Some analog units aren't too great e.g. the Hori GameCube controller which kinda fucks you up if you want very specific angles. It's worth checking in the calibration!

Did you have trouble heating up the existing solder to make it flow? I've been trying MULTIPLE methods to desolder but the existing solder REFUSES to liquify. Is nintendo using some sort of super solder or something? lol Please let me know what you were able to do to get the existing solder off. I've tried tinning the tip of the soldering gun and checking the temperature on the tip to make sure it actually melts fresh solder-- and it does. But on contact with the board it doesn't seem to have any effect with the existing solder. I have FLUX and the braid as well-- but it doesn't absorb anything when I apply it to the area I'm desoldering. I also tried mixing new solder with the existing solder in hopes that it will help bond and melt, then wick it up but the wick only picks up the fresh solder. ): I tried heating my board up with a heatgun to make sure there's no temperature loss on the board. But the existing solder is so stubborn, it doesn't budge or warp. I have a soldering pump/sucker and it seems to only suck the fresh solder too ): Using different solder tips hasn't helped either. I went from needle, down to the thickest one. Is the Switch Pro Controller soldered with some special metal? It's driving me INSANE. Any tips appreciated.
@funymony
@funymony 4 ай бұрын
Update: The soldering iron I was using was defective, didn't heat the tips proper or stay consistently hot. So I got a new one! I just finished desoldering 3 joystick modules off 3 controllers. lol I tinned the new tips on low heat, then I cranked it up to 405c (around 750f) and got to work. New soldering iron worked as intended. The solder on the Switch Pro Controller was STUBBORN. I used plenty of flux and tinned the tip of my soldering iron from time to time. The trick is to use fresh solder on the solder you're trying to remove. Give it time to bond with the old solder before melting it and sucking it up with the solderpump. ...but to be honest-- this was harder than it should of been. I kept adding/removing solder over and over but there was always solder in the pinholes that was too stubborn to come out. The wick wouldn't suck it out either. I actually had to snip the pins of the joystick module with a wire cutter so I could get closer to the pinhole and get the remaining solder. It only worked on some of the pinholes. I'm sure it would of worked on the others if I kept at it but I had some "FastChip" handy and used that-- IT WORKED LIKE A CHARM. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT! "FastChip" and "Chip Quik" is a low-melting solder that stays molten long enough to pull parts out once applied. It also bonds to old solder much better and makes it easy to remove/suck up. The pin holes on the pcb were really clean after applying it and I used it on my two other controllers. The process was way easier once I started applying it. Once the pinholes were clean, I was able to snap the new joystick modules into place and solder them up. Now I have 3 controllers to use when I play Smash Ultimate. lol. Anyway, that's my experience. Hope it helps someone out there! ALSO, PLEASE SOLDER IN A WELL VENTILATED AREA AND HAVE FILTERS RUNNING! LEAD SUCKS- YOU DON'T WANT THAT GETTING ABSORBED IN YOUR BODY AND PUT INTO YOUR BONES. DON'T BREATHE IN THE FLUX SMOKE! Take care of yourselves! Good luck!

All I have is my dad's old school saudering iron for wiring, but I figure with the stick already broken I dont have much to lose. Would I be fine just wiping away the melted sauder? Those square teal covers on the sides of the stick component house the potentiometers. They clip in to the component on their sides and can be pried open from the top, allowing you to remove the little circular contact. Cleaning this contact and the other circular contact inside the teal cover fixed the up-down problem I was having. You could also replace the contact. Here's a video showing how to pry open the teal cover: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/g9WhipaB2tGoe2Q.html around 4:20 blaze it I also recommend using at least 91% IPA for cleaning. My personal favorite cleaner is "'CRC' QD Electronic Cleaner", you can get it from Wal-Mart.

this is the correct fix! this will get your old controller back to working perfect. the real problem is after a few months you will need to repeat. then after cleaning a few time the copper will tarnish more and more which needs cleaning more often. that's when i took the simple $10 part and replace the pot sensor plastic and (sub par) copper spring out of the part and put it in my controller. i am glad to see more and more people coming to the same conclusion that i did. Forget about the pump, should be able to get it clean just using the wick. I used to work in electronics R&D and the "pros" could replace that in 5 minutes. Really sucks this is such an issue. I'm at a loss as to whether I should try to fix, buy new or sell the switch and get an X-Box.
@roytott
@roytott 5 жыл бұрын
Actually you should just cut the pins from the bad unit, then heat the solder and remove the pins one by one with pliers. then clean off all the solder with the wick.

My controller is in a world of it's own. It drifts down on the left stick and down on the right stick. When playing splatoon 2, I can't walk/swim full speed. When going through menu's, it goes down. Same for all games TV and handheld.

This has nothing to do with the quality of the product idiot. The Switch Pro Controller is literally the highest quality controller for any platform. Any controller can get defective sticks if the person using it doesn't use it with care.

this is a good fix but it's the hardest possible way. you can simply open the side of the pot sensor (no solder) clean or replace the plastic and copper spring. on say and old ps2 controller where the analog stick is totally worn out then this would be the correct fix. considering most people have this problem long before the stick is even close to worn out this is way over kill. i did like your video and the more people learning and apply there own fix is great to further the subject. FU Nintendo for not doing any thing to solve this problem. if you would simply say sorry there's a design flaw and we STOPPED production of the old design. here is our updated controller with better quality parts. i would gladly buy ANOTHER $70 controller!!!

Do you know what kind of spring we would buy to do that on a Switch Pro Controller? Maybe you could link it, if it's not too much trouble. Thanks.

this is what i did with my first controller at walmart. first one lasted 6 months or so then the second and third were drifting from day one. on the third controller walmart stopped carrying and offered only a refund. i purchased a forth controller and worked out the problem with my back-up controller. i still have to open clean or replace the pot sensor spring every few months. i always wash my hands wipe off my controller before a gaming session.

@MysticDragons
@MysticDragons 5 жыл бұрын
had mine for about 2 months for the left analog stick to break. The problem with the drifting was caused by the module inside. It physically had trouble to center itself causing the analog stick to be slightly off center causing a drift ingame. The drift would go away if I simply centered the analog stick but would return if I pressed it in any direction. I opened the controller and there was no sign of gunk jamming the mechanism. This was simply "wear and tear". I am perplexed it happened to a 2 month old controller, and I wasn't playing THAT much on my switch. I paid quite a lot of money for this "pro" controller only to find out cheap and faulty parts are being used to make them. I never had this problem with PS3/4 controllers. Nintendo sucks ass when it comes to controller quality.
@Friendly_Boo
@Friendly_Boo 5 жыл бұрын
MysticDragons I’ve always had this problem with controllers to be honest. They are made poorly inside. I think it has also a lot to do with what games you play. Most games use the left stick for movement. Depending on what game you playing , you might move the sticks back and forth quickly. In a game callled super smash bros you have to erratically move it to get out of attacks. But even for FPS games say fortnite, the controller can take a beating from always clicking in the analog to run In quick jerky movements. It is a scam how much company charge for new controller yet make the inside so delicate and poorly crafted.
