I just repaired my seventeen year old Denon UD-M31 by following your instructions, it’d read some CD’s intermittently, I turned the all important screw anticlockwise as it wouldn’t go clockwise, turned it about just under half a turn or a gnats tit, anyway it’s even reading slightly scratched CD’s like my original Shaved Fish by John Lennon. I cannot thank you enough especially for making Covid-19 lockdown more bearable 👍

Good video showing a possible problem scenario. Trimmer pots become a bit oxidised and high resistance over time. Therefore the setting is no-longer in spec. Moving them slightly might clean their contacts a little which in this case helped but you really have no idea if the calibration is correct or not. As pointed out, it may go over spec and burn out the laser. If the high resistance is elsewhere, like the tabs that hold the contact wiper in place. Doing this will not fix that. My suggestion is to get some contact clearer lube such as Deoxit spray. Do not spray this directly on the trimmer But spray a little into a small container. Then dab the smallest amount possible onto the trimmer contact points and dab these areas with the corner of a tissue to soak up excess conditioner. Wait for it the dry before powering up and testing again. This should soak through the oxides and regain continuity through the trimmer without moving it at all. If this is the least invasive approach and you can always try moving it if it doesn't work. The brand I suggest is expensive but is pretty safe on most components (some aren't). It is a product that can be used to clean and lube scratchy potentiometers such as volume controls as well as faders and faulty switches.
@marcusfred4480
@marcusfred4480 4 жыл бұрын
Yes. That's what I have thought too. They go high by themselves at the point the contact touches the carbon track. By moving it slightly yes you are adjusting the factory setting, but prob more freeing the wiper on the trimmer and making proper contact again.

Yep. My 11 year old anthem blu ray stopped reading some blu rays---everything else played fine---i turned the pot a teeny bit clockwise and then back to where it started. Now it works like new. reads discs quicker too. so, i think just moving the pot broke some oxidation .

Before going to this extent, I’d recommend simply removing, cleaning and resetting to connection cable. 9 times out of 10 that’s the real issue and adjusting the settings may not be necessary. It’s very possible that was the issue here as well and the adjustments weren’t necessary.

In older disc players that have ceased to play or even load a disc, the fault my not be a weak laser, but rather oxidized connections and contacts: as someone else here suggested, remove the ribbon cable and use a little contact cleaner on it, then re-insert it and pull it out a few times to clean off any oxidation. VERY gingerly, as these thin flat cables are uber delicate. Same goes for the diode current pots: mark the original position of the wiper, spray a little contact cleaner (a very little bit goes a long way) on the carbon trace, and turn the wiper back and forth thru its full range a number of times, setting it back to the mark. If this does not fully restore function, then try turning up the laser current a little, maybe 5 minutes (clockwise) as viewed on a clock face, that is, 1/12 of a circle. These procedures have worked for me on several players as old as 35 years. The unit Mr. Electronicle worked on in the video has the diode current pots in a relatively convenient location for adjustment. Most of the players I have worked on have the pots on the underside of the laser board, which is a REAL pain in the arse , necessitating removal of the laser unit.

It's not always the laser diode going soft ... it's often the track on the tiny potentiometer that gets dirty and grimy so making the contact with the wiper unreliable .. I personally would mark the position with a very fine point... and then spray they track with electronic cleaning solvent and move the wiper quickly from one end of the circular track to the other.... this beds the wiper in and reduces contact resistance...

@@the1zedog They sell square belts. You need square belts specifically when applying them to small pulleys because they stay in the channels. As for what size? get an assortment. ebay is a good source as well. Get an assortment of sizes and test them until you find the right size. Due to the return of vinyl/mag tapes as a media, square belts are back in abundance and websites formerly specializing have found themselves apparently with a sea of competition in retail environments. always pays to take a pic if you don't know what you're doing. Otherwise, when you grab the cable and let it go...ususally it is "trained" by age to go near where it was plugged in when you drop it. It will often even tell you which way to plug it in the same sense. Look around where it drops for a pin terminal/receptical that is as wide. I can't tell from your description if it is a flat cable or a ribbon cable with a molex end, or a ribbon cable with a pin header end. Any way you slice it though, there is only one place it will fit and has the same number of pins.

Sometimes simply removing and putting back the ribbon cable fixes the issue. Oxidation may take place over a period of time. Also, the surface of the pots could get some oxide over time, and thus simply cracking their position can fix issues. Most likely the player will work for a number of years to come simply with what this guy did to fix it. Going back some years ago (late 1980's through to the mid 1990's) I used to service CD players at a contract job for warranty service when these players were expensive. I was servicing units from consumer level to professional level types. I was doing the tracking adjustments using test CD disks, a scope, and referencing to the service manual. I was servicing Sony, Panasonic, and some other types. I was also servicing VCRs and TV set. We were changing motors, belts, the laser unit assy., circuit boards, and etc. I used a laser meter to verify the laser strength. The factory level service manual normally has the emission specs for the laser for testing it. Especially with the early generation players the lasers were failing. The newer replacements were usually improved and would last a lot longer. Servicing these units out of warranty was fairly expensive. With consumer type units it did not pay to service them. Better to buy a new one. When servicing any CD player, never look directly in to the laser if you remove the shield! The beam is invisible to the eyes, and looking in to the laser can and most likely will lead to permanent eye damage. With many models of players the laser is turned on with the power applied, and it stays on. If the CD/DVD player is a writer, while in the play mode the laser works at a low power mode. In the burning (write) mode it is at a fair amount of power. I cannot remember off hand the power levels, but even in the play mode the laser is dangerous for eye sight. The reflected beam can also be dangerous! If you have a laser tester you can see if the laser is alive during standby mode if you have the shield removed, and put the sensor over the laser lens.

I have used this repair method myself, but it gives a good effect, usually for a short time. This involves contamination of the optics, which are not easily accessible, only the lens you cleaned can be accessed, and the increased laser power supply current is also a factor that shortens its life. A proper repair involves replacing at least the mechanism with a set of optics (they are not always easily available on the market - it depends on the model).

Wow! You're a genuine genie genius. I have a laptop that is being hit or miss about reading disks, so I am having a hit or miss time in installing the operating system. I have to use the CD/DVD way because its USBs aren't for bootable disks. It's an old laptop. It was working fine at the beginning and that's how I installed an operating system on it, but I want to add another operating system because I haven't gotten the first operating system to access WiFi; it is a Linux operating system and I'm not well versed on it. So I am going to try a partition with good old Windows 10, but the CD/DVD device is being difficult. I was thinking of buying one like it on eBay for only 7 dollars, but I decided to try cleaning it and wiggling it a little and it came back to work but it ran halfway for the WIndows 10 installation disk, it stopped spinning leaving the Windows logo, and it had not done loading all the installation utility to RAM. So, that's what motivated me to look around for ideas on how to fix these mechanisms.

I tried this cuz I found one of his other videos first that showed the same thing. It works! I can't believe it. But I just did it to a DVD player that has been sitting around for years. I think from before I was born and it works now too!

I'll give the dirty lens a try. Yamaha SACD player out of warrantee and two years old. Wish I had bought the extended warrantee offered by Amazon. Sending to an electronic repair shop is a hassle. Thanks for the video.

Thank you so much. I am going to try that on my old Sony Explode boom box i do for work. The question i have is WHY does the lazer eye NOT read if it is factory reset at the factory? Does the lazer degrade or current degrade? I am going to try this and hopefully save the best boom box i ever had. Thanks so much and RESPECT> RH DSD

One can also try to just remove/reinstall the ribbon cable and just hit the pots with a short burst of cleaner; could be that it was just a bad connection. If that doesn't work then you can tweak those pots. Thanks for this info, I've always wondered why those players quit so frequently. Usually people just threw them away. Just out of curiosity, what else did you have to do to that one?

Sorry for the delayed response. Long story short it was stored for a couple years in a very wet warehouse. It was covered in mold, inside and out. The display appeared very dim but it was just because mold had grown on the inside of the front panel.

Good info, I had few old panasonic cd players that don't read the cd-rw, fortunately I have all the tools and meters to play around so giving it a shot! Not sure if CD-RW support is barred from the chip or at the laser level... 🤞 Update: Nah, didn't work, it's already 20yrs old, didn't want to stress the laser more, it was 8.21 Khz , move it up to 9+ something, then turned back to 8.22 Khz (the variable resistor is very tiny) :P
