Homie, if you had $5 from everyone you helped. Boom. It took me 4 months to figure this out. Quoted "$450" for the repair. After watching both parts of this vid...I fixed it myself in 1 hr for $35. TEST.....TIFI. The only reason it took me an hr was because I didn't have a wrench for the emergency brake nut so I walk 1/2 a block to the AutoZone for a wrench set...so that hr includes the replacement of the part and the walk to AutoZone..I waited in line for a few minutes then walked back. (I may have even taken a smoke break after the walk) ~SO. This replacement that the average garage charges HUNDREDS of dollars to fix, can. In fact. Be done by anyone. In like 45mims.

Put the model year in the title Erick - I know you say 2005 in the video but it would help to see it in the title. I am working on a 2008 Aveo Sedan and the transmission doesn't look like this and there is no solenoid component of that size. Some of the wiring looks the same but the part that looks like a solenoid is on the passenger side and actually easier to access. I think it is important to clarify that the key removal problem could be for a failure here or a failure at the key side. In my case, the key won't come out but shifting can take place and I think there is a solenoid at the key cylinder that is defective. There must be a signal that comes from the brake to this solenoid that disengages a lock on the transmission lever. There must also be a signal that comes from here to a solenoid in the key cylinder to disengage a lock ( the question is whether the default position of the key solenoid is locked or released ). I found a pair of wires in the harness that don't go to the solenoid but rather to some terminals below the park position of the shifter. I found that there was 12 volts across the terminals when the shifter was not in park but 0 volts once in park with the engine running. So I believe those wires run to the solenoid on the cylinder and when actuated put a bolt into action to prevent key removal. My problem would seem to be that the bolt is stuck. Thanks for the video - allowed me to get into the guts there even though there are some differences.

Is there any particular reason you have it in neutral with the parking brake on instead of in park?

I have a question. My key wont come out of the ignition and my car won't come out of park unless I put a little key in the hole above this shifter. My son replaced the thing in this video, and broke the little spring, I'm guessing that was an important piece?

I know this is an old video but if I find those 2 wires that go to the salon oid can't I twist them together to eliminate the celluloid

Hey Erick, took mine apart and found a spring with a hook on both sides that was broke. Do you happen to know what that is called?

karen taylor - it may be a piece that broke from your old solenoid. Try to match it up to what I have in the video. Unfortunately I no longer have the car to cross check for you.

It's similar but different. Actually easier to access on the passenger side. If you just have a stuck key and not a stuck transmission this isn't the problem. It's the solenoid on the lock cylinder.

@@errcoche Hey Ed, that's actually exactly the problem I have. I'm stuck on ACC and the shifter works. I worked around by pulling a fuse, but now I can remove the key with the shifter in Drive too. Someone had said there's a microswitch on the 09's that senses when you're in park, and that mine might not be working or making contact when I'm in park in order to release the key, do you know anything about that?
