It’s 4 drops per gallon. Not 1. You had to adjust the dosage because of the water displacement caused from the rock/sand/equipment instead of how many gallons your tank is. That’s 100% why you overdosed on ammonia! Anyhow, happy reefing! Just thought I’d share my opinion!!

I think you should get your own RO unit mate. I do so many water changes for so many tanks, I don't even worry about RO, I just use tap and it works great here Sydney, Australia. By the water is not pure RO or it would be 0. I have a rain water tank and the TDS from that is 0.06. Also, buy yourself a python water changer or make up one yourself. It only takes me 20 minutes to do the water changes on 4 tanks larger than yours.

Wow, it's great to have followers from Australia. Welcome. 😊👍 So jealous of your operation, sound like your running a big operation. Clearly you have the reefing bug 😂. At the moment I'm using a company called Spotless Water, which is great by my scale of reefing. If and when I upgrade I will definetely invest in a 4 stage RO filter. You're definitely going to have a nice tank - I wonder, did you dose it per the gallon capacity of the tank or per the actual gallons of water? The rock and sand take up a certain amount so if it is say a 40 gallon tank, maybe there's only 32 gallons of actual water though, it still seems too high. Not sure I'd do a water change, why not wait for it to convert to Nitrite and Nitrate? Good luck with everything!!!!

Hi Jay Looking good... pity about the overdose of ammonia, no fault of your own. It's all a learning curve and at least your getting your water change routine dialed in.. You can use you salt mixing pump with some flexible hose to add fresh saltwater to the aquarium.. much quicker and less mess. Anyway get yourself a RODI unit and save yourself lugging water back from the shop... also TDS should be zero not eight but a dirty storage container could have cause that...

@jaysrealreefuk
@jaysrealreefuk 3 жыл бұрын
The ammonia bottle tells you to add 4 drops per gallon,but trust me it should be 1 drop per gallon. Lots of forums have written about overdosing Dr Tim's ammonia on Google . I read this after as I trusted the label. It took my cycle 8 weeks due to the ammonia overdose. Don't make my mistake my friend. Take care and thank you for commenting.
@mattywillo23
@mattywillo23 3 жыл бұрын
@@jaysrealreefuk I had already made the same mistake before coming across your video/channel. I'm going to get some more RO water to do a 50% water change before re adding beneficial bacteria. From your video I was unsure if you added any further ammonia at any point during the second cycle or did you use what was left from the original overdose?
@jaysrealreefuk
@jaysrealreefuk 3 жыл бұрын
@@mattywillo23 it's so frustrating when you spend a fortune on the tank and carefully follow the instructions and then you hit this problem..it took me 6 to 8 weeks to cycle to 0 ammonia with countless water changes. But I continued to add more on 3 other days taking off the scale and into space. Don't add anymore more till it reads zero ppm over a 24 hour period. Another mistake I made was I thought the tank had cycled as it was showing zero. So I stocked it with clownfish, goby and some clean up crew who started to turn over the sand bed and released loads of ammonia again! I was doing a 50% water change every day to keep them alive. My sand bed became an ammonia trap and I didn't know till the goby and snails turned it over!. However, on the positive note the cycle has been very stable and running well. So it is a good cycle when it's complete. My advice would be. Do your water change, vac your sand bed. Once the ammonia reads below 2ppm add more Dr Tim's bacteria to replenish the population, then test every day until ammonia reads 0ppm. Then add 10 drops of ammonia and see if it reads zero again after 24 hours. If it does the tank is cycled and ready for fish. Sorry about the long message, but I didn't want you to make the same mistakes as me. Like I say, great cycle once you get the ammonia back under control in the water and sand. Take care. Let me know how you get on.👍

Hi Jay, enjoying the journey. Unfortunate you dosed a little too much ammonia but looks like you have that sorted with the water change. Just one thing, and only my opinion but did that RO have a TDS of 8? If so, thats way too high, a good quality RO water has a TDS of 0. You dont know what those TDS's are, could be copper, could be silicates could be something else.

I done my setup on Friday with live sand , live rock and majority dry rock , added one and only bacteria waited 48 hours tested 0 Ammonia 0 Nitrite then added 100 drops 1drp litre for 123 litre tank as -20% substrate and rocks. 24 hours later tested again 5ppm Ammonia 0 Nitrite. Has this exceeded 2ppm because I added one and only 48 hours before i added ammonia Chloride? Filters been constantly on with 28.3c temperature. Not using filter floss or protein skimmer but am using Bio foam , Carbon, Bio Max. Any advice appreciated thanks.
@jaysrealreefuk
@jaysrealreefuk 3 жыл бұрын
if your ammonia is 5ppm, you've added far too much ammonia chloride like I did. Not a problem, but will take longer to cycle. The tank hasn't started to cycle yet. Complete a large water change (50 percent or above to half the ammonia). Once the ammonia is 2ppm or under add some new nitrifying bacteria to replenish the populations. Keep the high temp and no filters and floss like you are. When the ammonia drops to 0 over the coming weeks. You should then see a nitrite spike and then finally nitrates. When ammonia and nitrite or no higher than 0.2ppm you can add your first fish. Tank will be cycled. The instructions for Dr Tims ammonia is wrong! Lots of forums on Google have wrote about it. When I started to use 1 drop per gallon the cycled worked perfectly. Hope that helps. Thank you for commenting and following. 👍

Thanks for the advice Jay , Yes I noticed it used to be 1 drop per gallon but now 4. I can't understand why they changed the dosage when it originally worked and its the same solution. Yeah I was a plank and followed the instructions how strange that sounds. I think I will like you said to do a water change. I'm gonna wait another 48 hours just incase because I'm using the API master test kit and it's so hard to match the colours from 2pm to 8pm. I must be going colour blind! I've heard same problems with the test kit. When you realised you added way to much and you commenced a water change how many different days did you add Ammonia beforehand? Was it one like me or more? When I'm back on track and I do generally need to add more Ammonia I'm scared how much to add lol. Cheers Jay.
@jaysrealreefuk
@jaysrealreefuk 3 жыл бұрын
It is so frustrating, when like us you spend the time researching and carefully reading the instructions. However, long term it did turn out to be a positive. I wouldn't dose any ammonia, initial after the water change and it drops below 1ppm. Too up the nitrifying bacteria when it gets to this level. When ammonia is zero stick to the 1 drop per gallon. When you have zero nitrites and ammonia, but nitrates above 1ppn your tank is cycled. Hope that helps. Keep me posted on your progress. Take care. 👍
