"how to get rid of the treble hiss. Don't use the treble!". Got ya, mate

cable can also make a big difference. i used for year a shitty cable that one of my guitarist friend give me and my onboard preamp treble will give me hiss far sooner than expected, just boosting 10% would hiss and my sadowsky pedal was the same i could never go over 20% boost and here the weird thing, if the volume wasn't maxed out on the pedal i would get hiss too. i change cable a few month ago and now on my onboard preamp i can boost 60% without hiss ( and its a bartolini so the treble is at 10K too) and same on the sadowsky. as a bonus i also have less interference, radio and electrical.

Haha! Well, you basically got the point there, buddy. However, I hope it came across that the Sadowsky onboard eq's treble knob is much more than what you will find on most basses. We do get questions on that subject every now and then, so we thought it's time for a lil info video on that. Atb, Lars

This is a genuinely useful tutorial. I believe that there are still people whose mental model of onboard EQ is the old passive EQ, in which to get the full output - both volume and frequency range - of the pickup you have to have everything wide open. 'Wide open' - which here simply means 'no cut' - then becomes the default setting, with only cut available. By contrast, with active EQs, which can cut and boost, the default position is usually 'midpoint'. 'Wide open' now means 'full boost'. No wonder any noise present is exaggerated.

So true... I've had a bassplayer in my studio, who was so used to his '63 Precision (beautiful bass, actually...) that he couldn't figure that out on my old 70s Jazzbass with Audere active preamp driving those Fender pickups! 🤣🤣🤣 He kept cranking it, and it sounded just rubbish on that song 🤣🤣🤣 So: kept it in the middle, and adjust if and when needed...

This was one big reason many players rejected the MM Stingray initially- they were used to Fenders. They cranked the bass and treble and couldn’t be heard in a mix 🤣. Those old Music Man preamps can sound quite transparent and natural.

Hahaha, I really enjoyed watching this 🤣🤣🤣👍 Maybe I'm just old-fashioned here, but when playing live (studio is a completely different approach!) I start with all EQ in the middle / neutral, on both amp and bass. Then I'll get the room sound better by adjusting the EQ on the amp, and then, if I'm missing something, *then* I'll adjust my bass tone too. In other words: work from the room towards your bass, not the other way around... A good compressor helps too (I use a blend of an optical compressor pedal ánd the built-in compressor on my amp) to keep things nice and groovy, and that also might accentuate some frequencies. Like Yoda already said: It's not easy being green, guys 🤘😜🤘

Good video, I have a couple tweeterless 15s and some 12s with tweeters and knowing how to use your treble controls depending on the type of loudspeaker helps you get the most out of your equipment. I think I actually prefer boosting treble into cabs with no tweeters as the effect is very smooth and pleasing. When recording direct I tend to always pull out 10k+ because it's just not relevant information especially on fretless. If you're using a cabsim or IR you should also keep these tricks in mind.

@@FlamesAt1000ft The Bongo is an amazing bass, but personally I prefer the Stingray ... PJ or JJ is nothing but a matter of personal taste as well. That said, the JJ offers a sound that is in everyone's ear from all those decades of beautiful music. But it's all your choice, my friend! :-)

Just like guitar tone, the bass tone should be set in the context of a full band. You might not need as much treble as the cymbals occupy that space.
