How to Fix Honda Odyssey alarm that keeps going off for no reason

This is a 2002 Honda Odyssey, but it is very likely the same deal with newer or older models. The sensor that detects if the hood if being opened starts to fail, which causes the alarm to seemingly go off for no reason what so ever.
This is a quick and easy fix that anyone can do.

Of course this had to happen to me at 1 am the alarm lol. Its no fun trying to fix this in the freezing cold, half asleep, pitch black and not knowing if someone was actually trying to break in. This video was a huge help thank you!

FYI this may seem like a good fix but I don't know if it'll work in the long run. I tried it and here's what I discovered: When disconnecting the hood sensor, yes I was able to lock all the doors from the either the key fob or manually from the door. However, if you have a newer Honda vehicle that has the factory remote start, having this sensor disconnected WILL NOT allow the remote start to work! Don't ask me why I even decided to try the remote start when I was messing around with this but I'm glad I did! Mine's a 2017 Ridgeline. So I went ahead and ordered the part which is called Lock assembly-Hood and it costs me $30. The sensor/switch comes with it so it's one piece. It's only three bolts holding and it's easy to replace, I know because I took the current one off to take a closer look at that sensor hoping I could fix it. When I get the new one and do the replacement I'll post the video on my channel. As far as I could tell the same part fits just about every Honda vehicle depending on the year of course.

I disconnected the sensor which was just as easy to do as shown but it had no effect. I found a web site that one of the people suggested locking all the doors and then unlocking the drivers side door with the key. That worked.

Part of your connector fell out at 1:46 when you removed the sensor. It's white and is inside the grey connector. It fell down in your engine. The piece helps seal against weather.

My understanding is that if you really want to disable it you need to *short* the connector wires so that the alarm cannot be activated... this takes care of all other door sensors. Mine is a 2008, aggravating to say the least... with the help of your video I was able to locate the connector (not exactly like yours, but knowing that it is in the latch helps). I cut the wires, then stripped them, then wire-nutted them together. You have to test the system by rolling down the driver's window, locking the car remotely, then reaching in and unlocking the door... if the alarm is active, you'll get the honking. Mine was definitely disabled by shorting the wires. BTW, you have to lock, then unlock the car remotely to stop the honking... the PANIC button doesn't help... I'd removed my PANIC button from the fob before I found the real solution.

2005 odyssey sounded off at the grocery store today. It was frightening people, me included! I left the area and parked in an empty lot and found your vid! Thank you so much fir this helpful video. We needed to reset the keys by licking/unlocking the door from outside! The car recognized we had the keys and weren’t thieves?? We will see if it reoccurs👍Our hood was disabled by the Honda dealer so it could be that connection you unplugged will be next!!

We did this and the alarm continued to blare. Eventually I found the fuse for the horn (R3 I believe-but I could still hear the fuse clicking trying to make the alarm sound) and drove to AutoZone where they recommended that we cycle the key. They said some cars you have to cycle the key in the back lock to the trunk and other cars it is the driver's door . Basically it just means using the key to unlock the door. We used the key to unlock the truck/back hatch and it totally worked. Finally turned off after almost two hours of trying everything we could think of.

Thank you! I am stuck in my car right now because my battery was low and for some reason my panic alarm went off! I was in front my my son's school and almost took off with it still going and then luckily it stopped. Now I am home and I open my door and it goes off again...trying to figure out how to turn off since my car remotes both need batteries. Thank you for your video!

I don't think an alarm sensor malfunctioning because after almost 20 years of use it has some dust and grime in it is a manufacturing mistake. Sounds more like a maintenance issue. Especially since mine didn't start doing this until a few days ago. Replaced all the alarm sensors and should be good for another 20 years.

Ok... this got me part way... if the cause is a DiFFERENT sensor, this won’t work... however, what you can do here is break a paper clip, bend it, and stick this into the female connector in your video to complete the circuit...This will send the signal that your hood latch is open, therefore your alarm will NEVER be activated when you lock the car.. Worked for me after having several so called experts look at this car and offering zero solutions

Believe it or not, it’s still happening on later models. i have a 2017. I took it to the Honda dealership specifically for this issue a month ago. And apparently they never fixed it, although they told me they addressed my concerns.

Thanks for this video.. It happened a couple of years ago in a downpour at 1am. The switch under the hood latch must have dried out eventually as its been fine since until today when my fob would not open the door locks so I unlocked with my key and the alarm triggered. Initially pulled the horn/brake fuse found under the hood on the passenger side which kept the light flashing for a while but shut the horn off. But I then needed to push the manual shifter button to get out of park to drive. Once I got home I pulled apart the hood latch switch connector and put the fuse back in and alls well and quiet. I then sprayed contact cleaner all around the light blue switch found at the bottom of the latch and then added a little dielectric grease in the separated hood latch switch connector and re plugged in. Alls good so far. May try to feed some dielectric grease down and around the switch to hopefully ward off any water getting in..if it goes off again I may just separate the connecter and call it a day as you need to get into the van to pop the hood so it is fairly safe.

I had a similar issue with 2015 Honda Odyssey. All you have to do is clean the latch with some "brake fluid" or "degreaser", pressure wash the gunk off and blow dry that latch mechanism. One more thing you would notice is that upon locking the car, it would not make any noise (beep). Thats the sign that some latch is still open and the alarm will go off. I have also had an issue with the tailgate being not shut properly once and the same issue happened.

This happened to me last night at 2:00 a.m. 3:00 a.m. 4:00 a.m. and 5:30 a.m. before I finally was awake enough to look up a repair. For anyone watching who has a 2006 Odyssey you don't need to pop anything out for the sensor it's located just behind the latch you'll see wires running to your latch and it can be unplugged with pliers gently or by squeezing the tabs. Seems to hopefully stop that we will see

Water's coming in from top I have had three Hondas and found out that the water comes through the top where the roof meets the side and it's channeling down to where your wires are at tricking in off your alarm

My horn alarm went off while I was monkeying with the door locks (I do not have a remote ). I disconnected the battery, waited about 10 hours, disconnected the connection shown in the video ... reconnected the battery and the horn alarms sounds. Right now I just a easy way to disconnect my horn and find the way to prevent the cause of the horn alarm activation.

I have a 2002 Honda Odyssey. My alarm went off for apparently no reason one night and all the doors were locked after hearing it, running outside to see if anyone was there and checking everything. So i just unlocked the door lock with my key and it turned off. I do not use a keyless remote for it because it got wet a long time ago and quit working. I kinda have a suspicion that the problem is in the sliding door sensors because mine have trouble closing whether i use the handle or the automatic buttons on the left drivers dash i have to help them by pulling a little pressure while they automatically roll with them.. The rollers are quite worn out and the doors dont fully close as tight as they did when it was newer so maybe there is the tiniest gap in the sensor when the car cools, things shrink, and the gap gets a little wider until it trips the alarm. And boom, middle of the night it goes off and wakes the neighbors.

So I did this and it fixed the problem, but the next morning my car wouldn't start. It started right after I disconnected the plug, but not the next morning. Reconnected the plug and let it sit a few minutes, and it started again. Whyyyyyyyyyy??? What do I do in this case?

For my Touring model, the security system indicator blinks several times when all the doors are closed, and when they are locked. The color of the security system indicator is red and shaped like a small circle (just like the low fuel indicator, but a different color). How it looks like: 🔴

Nice video but my issue is my factory alarm keeps Turing on (horn beeps and doors lock). Normally, when alarm is turned off/doors unlocked via remote,, once any door gets opened the alarm won't self arm but mine keeps self arming even if doors are wide open. This is without engine running. 2002 odyssey lx.

I did this because my alarm kept going off, is it possible that the alarm is still going off except that there is no sound? Asking because my battery keeps dying, nothing wrong with the battery. Thinking maybe the alarm is going off quietly for the whole night.

what I did here, only disables the sensor, all other sensors are still active and the alarm should still work if any of the other sensors are triggered.

You know when you’ve disconnected the hood sensor and it still bloody happens (and your neighbours and surrounding buildings all begin to hate you now coz u promised it had been fixed last time) Or at least that’s how I found out… it was likely the tailgate instead, much harder to get to …. Now I just unhook the negative on my battery when I get home so we can all sleep in peace. Sigh.

I’ve heard that the hood latch sensor itself can be cleaned with brake cleaner. I would unhitch the negative terminal to work on sensors, but I’m not sure about Honda’s and their battery systems. I’m new to Honda and you had better ask an expert.

I did as you said in this video and it did not work. I changed the starter today and now I try to hook the battery back up, the horn starts blasting, even after fallowing your instructions here. Any other suggestions? Maybe take out the horn fuse? I have to find it first LOL

Yes, I called Geico and they send a tow truck guy and he pulled a slim bright green fuse that was the horn fuse. Hope you got yours fixed too!

I did this and horn kept blaring. Geico tow guy came out and pulled the lime green fuse that was the horn fuse. Honking stopped. I dropped the white plastic center part of that connector and now cannot find it. I hope it doesn't hurt the van to drive it with that staying disconnected.

(2009 Honda Accord) Battery died. Purchased New battery. Connected new battery, car alarm blasting. I made sure all doors were locked including driver's door. Exited car, unlocked Driver's door with key. My problem Solved.

@@chadwestwood9843 this will only work if your hood latch was the actual problem. With my honKa F-it turns out it was the tailgate. Hard to reach so Now I just unhook the negative from the battery before bed so we ALL can get some rest for miles around. Eugh!

This started after getting the ac repaired. I have tried this but no success. I have cleaned the switch and plug 2x with electrical cleaner and still no success. Tried locking with just the key and still no success. Any other ideas

Didn’t work for me. Must be another sensor. Update: putting a paper clip into to the female hood sensor keeps it from arming the alarm. But you can still manually lock the car.

2008 Honda accord recent incident: I figured out that I would I guess locked my door but car thinks I’m not in car. Red security light would start flashing and alarm keep going off!! Start car alarm go off. Turn it off still alarm. Open door alarm. Solution: get out of car put key in door and simply turn left and right. I read that somewhere and tried it. If worked. Called Honda they say faulty wiring due to mice and $800 blah blah.

Will the horn will work normally? Our neighbor has this issue, EXCEPT when he gets into it, it goes off and stays on no matter if he's driving or not. When he shuts the engine off, I think it then stops. Perhaps I'll try this option for him.

@@warrenhardy Thanks. As it turns out, his is an 2007 Honda Van. The connector is smaller and directly behind the latch. I just unplugged that and the alarm stopped and the horn still works. I wasn't sure if this would somehow disable the alarm completely, but then, logic kicked in and it should only not trigger the alarm if the hood is opened. The rest should be fine. I feel very sorry for this neighbor. He's a really nice guy and doesn't understand technology at all. Mechanics rip him off big time and take advantage of his lack of knowledge. When I was checking this out, he also showed me how the button to lock/unlock all the doors doesn't work right. He insisted that it's the battery and it was difficult to get him to understand that his battery was just fine. After all, he starts the van with no problem at all. So I got my meter and showed him that when off, the battery''s voltage was at 12.5V, which is perfect and then when started, it jumps to 13.8 or so, which is also perfect. I think that I got through to him and avoided him from taking his van to some crap place to get a new battery. He was convinced that all the problems are battery related, which they are not. I explained how there's some wiring issue with the door locks, because I was able to get all the actuators functioning, just not by that 1 button. These mechanics that rip people off should all be shut down!

Strange. This will kill the relay that sets off the alarm. So no alarm or lights should be going off. If it still does then this was not your problem.

You may need to make a U shaped piece of wire with a paperclip and stick that in the female socket after you disconnect it in the video. Make sure it's touching the metal in the female socket. This is because when the circuit is open, the car thinks the hood is closed. It's opposite of intuition, but that's just the way it's programmed. Think of it like a door open light. When the door is open, the circuit is complete and the bulb lights up in the dashboard. Or you can cut the female socket completely and wire nut the two wires together. Either way, you should wrap the sockets in electrical tape. Exposed wires or connections can cause sparks, fires, and injury. But closing the circuit, the car will always get the electrical signal telling it that the hood is open. The alarm can't arm if it thinks the hood is open. Consult with a mechanic if you don't know what you're doing. I'm not giving advice or instructions, just comments.

It could be a different sensor that is affecting your car, each door has one and so will the trunk

My Alarm goes off for 2 minutes every time I open the door in or out😤🤪 and I've disconnect the the latch wire harness. It only goes off when I open or close the door what could it be next 🙏 please help

I did that fix 6 months ago had no more problems but this past weekend I was sleeping in that back of my van i had locked the doors while I was inside I got cold during the night I had a window down some I reached over driver seat to turn the key to switch it on to roll the window up and the damn alarm went of 2 times at 3:30 in freaking morning.

This will only stop the alarm from going off of someone pops your hood. Doors opening will still set it off.

This is an old video, I don’t have this van anymore. But I believe it does not disable the alarm, it just disable the sensor for the hood. So if someone were to open the hood of your car, your alarm won’t go off, but if someone were to open the doors to your car, it would.
