Freezing is great. I got in the habit of freezing pretty much any virtual instrument or tracks with high-latency effects (like amp sims). It's quick and undoable! Right-click the freeze button, choose 'Freeze Options' and you can choose whether to include effects in the freeze. This was not the default behavior when I started using it, not sure about new installations of Cakewalk. Also extend the 'Freeze tail duration' if sounds like crashes ringing out are getting cut off. Thanks Mike!

Since I work completely in virtual instruments at the moment, I do this every time before starting the mix. I'll first bounce all the track MIDI clips to one clip, then extend the head of each track clip to the beginning of the timeline. That way all of the frozen audio files (which are rendered to the Audio project folder) start at the same place for archiving. Once that's done, I close Cakewalk and reopen the project (which loads really fast) just to make sure all the program memory is cleared out and recovered. Then I'll start my mix.

Ooh! Didn't know about freeze tail duration. As someone who likes things drenched in reverb that'll be a very handy setting I think.

Can you or Mike please help me. When I un-freeze certain virtual instruments the track moves/shifts out of time. I keep having to realign the track with the rest of the song tracks. It's super frustrating. Can someone please explain why this is happening and what to do about it . Thanks guys!

Disconnect from the internet when you are recording music. Some people don't think about this but there are apps that run in the background that people don't know about. these apps check for newer versions of the software. In the past, I have ruined good recordings simply because the Windows operating system was updating and I was unaware of this going on while I was trying to record music. You can turn off the update feature but the simplest way to fix it is to just disconnect from the internet. While the computer is on the internet the operating system will use system resources that could be used for recording. Use Task manager to close down programs that run in the background and programs that start when you turn on your computer. You got to be careful here because many of these are needed by the operating system. You can shut things off like google crash handler, Adobe startup apps, update apps, print spooler, and Microsoft office. You will be amazed at what this does for latency. They will all come back when you reboot your computer.

I am still so new to using Cakewalk after only using Garageband for so many years. I have been upgrading my computer and peripherals the last few months for better mixing, recording, and video editing. And this week I finally got a new microphone (MOVO vsm-7) and my first ever audio interface (Focusrite Scarlett Solo 3rd Gen). I've been having trouble setting it up and using it all day lol...but your video was so helpful in better understanding latency. And as I'm an amateur music mixer and still learning cakewalk as I go with each project...wow..I can't believe I did not know what that little snowflake icon was!!! I can't wait to try that tip out! I definitely subscribed, so I can come here for more tips and tricks! Keep up the content!

Great video, Mike. I stumbled on another method of removing latency while recording vocals or guitars. I arm a track for recording in Cakewalk with the echo turned off. Then I open up the standalone version of IK Multimedia's Mix Box and load the effects I want to hear. Then I go back to Cakewalk and start recording. I can then hear my Cakewalk tracks and whatever I have going into Mix Box at the same time with zero latency. It is glorious. I wanted to share that with you and your viewers. You might make a video of that process, sometime. Thanks for all you do for us independent music producers! Mike Wilhoit, Dothan, Alabama, USA

An additional tip for the latency part. If you apply the delay timing concept here, you will get the same results. Anything above 10 milliseconds will become identifiable by the human ear. Anything that's 10 or fewer milliseconds will not be distinguishable. In essence, all you really need your computer to do is hit 10 milliseconds for latency, and then you're good. Just balance that out with sampling. There's a super old and classic 80's/90's looking video on KZfaq called the art of mixing. It teaches this concept along with a lot of other mixing ideas extremely well!

I have found that the best way to deal with latency without rearranging your computer settings every time you want to record is "OUTBOARD MONITORING", this is a little more advanced but, it really isn't that difficult. You just need a good interface with more than two outputs and a decent mixer, and this is not as expensive as it may sound.

Another great video thanks Mike. Freezing tracks is something I’ve pretty much always done but your explanation is great. Glad to see you saying things I have often said: it is helpful to think of the buffer setting as a DYNAMIC setting that changes per project, or at different phases of the project. Recording live guitar DI with FX? Later on when you are editing the parts? Set it higher. It would be helpful to have a dynamic setting on the Console - Feature request?

Definitely one of the best presented so far Mike - you'll have to be careful otherwise you might get to be slick ;-) Seriously, I've been using ASIO4 All with an onboard soundcard and it works fine for me - but I don't do any audio recording and I am only a hobbyist so have not felt the need for an external audio unit. I get acceptable latency with VSTi's so generally happy. Over at the Cakewalk Forum it has been suggested to use WASAPI but I couldn't get any sound out of that (probably my fault as I may not have set everything up properly!). Do you or any of the team here have any thoughts on that

I do have a suggestion Mike. Do an Export Quick Mic of what you'd be listening to when you want to add a guitar track for instance. Then open a New Cakewalk project at the same tempo of course. Make sure you start your recording at "0". When finished, export your recorded track then import it to your project.

Another very useful video Mike. I bought a new computer at the end of last year and went from Windows 7 (which I always liked!) to Windows 10 and had more problems initially with latency with the new PC than I ever had with the old. Anyway I managed to sort it out, mainly by doing what you have suggested and playing around with the settings. However, changing the buffer size when mixing the finished recording is something I had never thought of. A brilliant idea and something I shall do in future. One thing I am thinking of doing is upgrading my RAM from 8gb to 16gb. Is this something you would recommend?

OMG... Thank you for this video. A million times. Freezing the tracks fixed everything. Now I have to drive into the details, explain my situation, and ask a questions If anyone can answer and help others please reply. I was trying to redo a directly recorded piano track from my electronic piano. I didn't like the sound but I didn't have the versatility of midi tracks available to change it so I wanted to redo the track using midi. The latency made it impossible. I thought 'that's strange, I didn't have such latency before'. I created a new project and confirmed that I don't really have a latency problem. If i delete all of the tracks the latency goes away. Freezing the tracks fixed all of that. So my questions are... -What is the payoff? I presume that freezing a track is using up storage space to pre-render the tracks. Pre-rendering several tracks uses a lot of storage space. Is this accurate? -If the previous question was accurate, does unfreezing a track free up that space? Or does it use up space every time you make a change and freeze again? -What effects does freezing a track have on other aspects of the mix? Are there situations where freezing a track stops providing information to other tracks or bus's in the mix? EDIT: And again. Thank you. This video didn't only confirm my thoughts as I attempted to fix my problem, but ended with EXACTLY what I was looking for. I can now move on to creating music instead of digging through forums/settings because of a hangup. (I had about 25 tracks. Only 12 were necessary so I deleted the others but the problem persisted.)

10:50 When Mike suggests to change these settings during the course of a project he means BUFFER SIZE only. Do not change bit depth or sample rate during a project. If you have weird stuff happening, like audio playing slightly fast or slow, then you can try playing with sample rate to reset audio.

@@CreativeSauce I just suffered an audio engine dropout and I'm unable to change the buffer size as suggested by the code in such cases. The option to adjust the buffer size doesn't work. Please suggest a way around it. Thank you!

Thanks for the tips Mike, Helped me no end. I'm thinking that the guy who clicked the Thumbs Down button must have done it by accident.

Mike-I hope you are well! Great vid, as always. Question for anyone out there- Mike pulled up something like a "task manager" or "resource monitor" that showed CPU usage, RAM usage etc. Beautiful, but where do I find this?? Is it a windows thing, an external plugin? I couldn't find anything in the Cakewalk documentation (which is completely useless! And why we love Mike!) about this being part of Cakewalk, not even in modules. Thanks for any help!

Cool video. What about busses and such for common effects?

with the latest versions of Banlab cakewalk 2020.9 I am getting a lot of pops and clicks once I have plugins on (Kontakt, ozone etc). older songs where I never had any issues now have the pops and clicks on them. Any suggestions or other folks getting the same issue?

Thanks for the tops. I found this video two years after you put it up. You mentioned that certain plugins on the Master Bus could cause latency. Sure enough, when I disabled Ozone 10 Essentials on the master bus, the latency went away.

forgot to mention, the latency was the keyboard input.

Question for you. ASIO is two decades old, and so are most DAWs and audio interfaces. How come we can never bring the latency at the minimum setting without the clicks and pops? Why is there always a trade-off, even with a powerful system? Haven't software developers and hardware manufacturers found a way around this? Lots of questions. Sorry! I've always wondered...

Great videos. Thank you. I am using a Behringer umc22 audio interface into a Chromebook os. I cannot find a driver for that interface compatible with Chromebook. So your tips are very helpful thank you.

Hello! Thank you for the explanations. I have a question though. When I choose ASIO from Playback and Recording and then in Driver Settings, when I click on ASIO Panel, nothing happens. Furthermore, my Input and Output devices show no options with ASIO. The Audio Interface I am using is Kurzweil UNITE-2 if that matters. On their website, it says that they support ASIO.

Hi Mike, love your videos! I have a weird latency problem that none of your suggested fixes addressed. I have a very simple project where I recorded a single 2-minute midi track chord progression. I disarm recording, set a loop on the first 12 seconds, hit play and then experiment with various melodies using my Yamaha keyboard. No latency problems on the first three iterations, but midway through the 4th iteration a latency shows up, and gets progressively worse with each iteration. By the 6th or 7th iteration it takes more than 10 seconds between pressing a piano key and the time the sound is heard. No latency if I click keys in the piano roll. I am using Windows 11 ver22H2 with the WASAPI Shared driver. I have no hardware audio interface. Tried ASIO4All and other software audio drivers, no joy. Fiddled with all the settings you mentioned, no joy. Nothing out of the ordinary in Task Manager. I'm stumped. The only workaround at the moment is to loop no more than three times, stop and start the playback again for another three loops. Suggestions?
