Glad to meet you, Sharon! 15 years ago my kids would bring toys home from their elementary school friends because their mom would probably be able to fix them. I laughed then (and fixed them). Thinking about your comment, "we" do this for several connected reasons: saves money, saves resources (money, plastic, metal,), reduces packaging waste of buying new, reduces landfill dumping, reduces (fossil fuel) energy consumption in production, shipping, waste collection...and there's a satisfaction in salvaging even if it means increase in our own energy usage. (At least then we're not using energy to run the TV, eh?) It just feels right! Or do you have different reasons? The funny thing is it probably was a punch that originally I got at Goodwill-another favorite way to save money, resources, reduce waste, and it brings me satisfaction when i find a treasure!

@@scraperfect you are definately the same as me, salvaging and reducing waste are my two top things too, somehow if you fix something and get aquainted with its inner workings, you end up valuing it more, it becomes more of a prized possession or tool if you have expended time or energy on making it work or work better. Could be something to do with having an engineer as a father and him, not having had boys, passed things on to me as I was the one who was interested in how things worked.

Sandpaper helped a bunch. I got an old Martha Stewart punch from the thrift store and really thought it was a dud but after a little TLC it'll cut a wonky corner. More love is needed. Thanks for the ideas. I'm going to find my giant roll of freezer paper now. For anyone who might need to know this. If you are trying to take apart an old Martha Stewart punch there are tabs at the front(mouth) and on the handle. Gently pull the top of the stamp and the handle apart until you can wedge a flat screw driver in between the two pieces of the handle. Twist and the top and bottom should separate. Now the metal punch is firmly nestled in the top, here there are tabs on each side. Gently work your screwdriver into the side and pry out the metal piece. If you move the plastic out some you'll see the tabs. Remember how everything fit together. Unless you like puzzles, then have at it. To put it back you have to get the metal piece back in evenly and then pry the tabs back into position. Then make sure the front tab on the top is in position before sandwiching the handle back together, I had to use my screwdriver to get the handle tab back in. Hope this helps.

I think the main thing that helped mine was the wax although I did take it apart as well. Never thought I really could take it apart which is why I didn't mess with it. I use this corner stamp more than any others so I'm so grateful that it is now working again and I won't have to buy a new one which I almost did until I saw your video

Thank you! I too have found this helpful. My corner rounder was not cutting cleanly. I took mine apart - it's a different brand and was easier. But that didn't fix it. But the wax trick works like magic. Now my homemade envelops look professional again.

I found your video and since I was desperate, I’m so glad I did! My flower punch had a manufacturing flaw - a small piece of metal stuck inside one of the flower petals that wouldn’t allow the punch to release. After it was filed down and I used a wax candle, it worked much better but I have to keep putting was in before every use. It’s worth it since the punch is discontinued! Thank you!
@scraperfect
@scraperfect 6 ай бұрын
Good news! Might it need just a bit more filing? Or maybe there's a rough spot from a rough file and sanding the edge with a diamond grit "sand"paper might help. It sounds like the wax helps and maybe you don't use the punch all that often, and hopefully you'll remember the wax is needed next time you pull it out after a long time not using it. (And did you contact the manufacturer? Maybe they'd credit you for a different punch if you explained or sent pics of the issue.)

That is so great! If you get some (or all) to work, think of each as a gift you get and that you give to the earth because most of us would simply trash it! I think there are usually a bunch of ways to solve a problem, and finding one that works for you, at a price that works, and does the least damage to others and the earth, is the best. I was happy to keep trying because I expect/hope to find a way, and if I’ve made it possible and easier for others, and they find success too, we’ll yay! It’s also a ethos I used in developing my products. If it’s just another thing to buy to do one thing when you already have others that work well, then it’s a waste of time and money. Anyway, I digress. Let me know if your “new” punches eventually work!!!

I even stretched the spring out a little bit more for some resistance hoping that might encourage the punch to retract after use and I used petroleum jelly as a lubricant (wiped it off after getting everything working). Many years ago I went with a friend to an art supply store. There I found a product called Cutter Guide. It's a liquid that you apply to the cutting edges of your punches, guillotine blades, etc. It has worked fantastically. None of my punches have gotten stuck. I'm down to just a tiny bit at the bottom of the bottle, so I tried to find the product. Alas, they apparently no longer make it. It came from a company called Inspired Crafts in Newman Lake, WA. Non-Toxic and made in America. Wonder if there is a way to get them to start making it again. Fabulous product.

THANK YOU SO MUCH for this great video!! I'm trying to find the clear mat you attached to the Strong Arm, but all I can find are form-fitting, molded black things for holding cell phones. My hands shake from Parkinson's Disease. My punches slip so easily when I try to place them on my Power Punch* platform (my fingers accidentally tap the punch as I remove my fingers from it). This non-slip mat would help me in many ways. Can you tell us more about it--where you got it, what it might be called, etc? Thank you. *Punch Bunch makes a Magnum Power Punch for "effortless punching" that is very helpful for those who have weak hands, arthritis, etc.

Hi Bobbie. Glad you found the video helpful. As to your question about the mat...I cut one of those things designed hold cell phones on dashboards.Some are black or colored. Mine was clear. It might be what you already have but mine is flat and not form-fitted. IF you have trouble finding one at a good price, we happen to have 2.5" x 3" clear pads packaged as Stamp Block Cling Cushion™ used to transform unmounted rubber stamps in to cling stamps which would work perfectly for your purpose. These are not yet for sale on our website, however, if you check out www.scraperfect.com and find other products you want to order, I would be happy to include one free if you mention it in the comments.

@@scraperfect I actually just tried it and a lot of the metal kept breaking off. I think they were just too old and not really made of stainless steel or of a harder metal because they just let crumbling in my hands which didn’t seem like it should have done so the way it did. 😭😭 the more the kids used the other ones, more just kept breaking and getting stuck and I kinda lost my patience after trying to fix the second one. Oh well, I tried! I’m wondering if a newer set is made of better quality metals so they won’t break like this, but I suppose it’s just time to invest in newer punches if I feel the need to get some for an actual particular project besides just for fun. The info was still useful since I had no idea how to get them apart without breaking the plastic, though, so thanks for that!

Sounds like incredibly cheap punches-- I'd say made in China, but almost everything is. Definitely, better made (branded?) punches should hold up. I doubt any of mine are newer than 10 years old. In fact, I recommend checking your Goodwill. Mine always has tons of them:)

@@scraperfect these are actually Friskers brand so I was surprised they broke like that. But like I said, I bought them about 20 yrs ago, and was actually shocked when I found them all on sale for about $12 for the whole entire set for a Black Friday deal in a case which is probably worth well over $250 for all of the pieces if bought separately. I thought it was a steal at that price so of course I didn’t hesitate and nabbed it when I saw it! Even if the punches don’t all work at this point, I definitely got my money’s worth out of them since they also came with a set of paper edgers, and a ton of shears. But it is what it is, I suppose. I bought a brand new punch, fiskars 1.5” for thick material and it wouldn’t go up all the way. I tried all the methods, even took it apart and put graphite powder in it (the stuff for key holes). Finally I gave up and washed it under hot running water, dried it, and now it works fine. So go figure. Maybe it was the water. Maybe it just needed used it a bunch of times. I definitely don’t recommend wax paper. It got stuck real bad.

Okay, so it seems foil is sharpening by realigning and breaking off any rolled edges, on a microscopic scale. The edged on your punch have rolled over from years of use, and forcefully pushing through a slight misalignment, which is why the file worked as you were removing those burrs. For others that is a diamond type round file and for a project like this the higher grit the better, any diamond file should work so long ad it can contour the edges your placing it against. I wouldnt touch the actual areas of the punch design, if you were to widen the gap between the punch and die it may never cut again. Wax paper is lubricating it, while simultaneously dulling it(from use cutting through paper part) . Ive never tried this but based on what ive been seeing i bet taking a block of green polishing compound which has an abrasive suspended in wax and rubbing it on construction paper or other fibrous material will achieve desired results for all failures. Ill have to give it a try and let you know if i can just find my punches. Also the dashboard sticky, there is a roll of it sold under the name Alien Tape. Its a non adhesive, washable reusable tape. This kind of tape is considered nano tape as its microscopically porous surface creates suction to most surfaces.
@scraperfect
@scraperfect 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks? Wax paper and foil are first line tries. They often work for minor issues. When mine was more than that, taking it apart was key. I couldn’t find “how to” so I made the video. The extras you add may be helpful to some. What I did worked great for me:)

I can't remember well as this was a long time ago, but are you sure the parts were aligned correctly when it went together? This one had the tape to show alignment on the white button piece, but others had different systems. That seems the most likely culprit.That or a spring isn't in correctly...but you probably tried both of these already, huh?!

I had to throw it away :( If I have this problem again at least I would know what to do now. Thanks for sharing.

Yes. It was the filing that did it in the end. Hopefully, there won't be a next time, but more than likely at some point there will and then you can find satisfaction in the pursuitof not throwing things away that can be fixed - as well!

Yes, like oil and water, oil and papercrafting doesn’t mix. ScraPerfect’s Best Cleaner Ever which is an oil based solvent contains an emulsifier so it can be easily removed with water or even a paper towel. It’s fantastic for removing paint, adhesive, ink, from hands, tools, brushes, and stamps (and even gum from carpeting!!)

I think the reason why they stuck up is bcoz no oil,punch it in wax paper,for baking,aluminum foil for sharpening,the edges of the puncher,I think this will help,,

Thanks for your suggestion but that is not correct. As I said in the video, I had already tried the wax paper, and foil and neither worked! I HAD to actually file it down a bit after I took it apart and found where the issue was. Yes, often the sharpening you mention works and most of us know about that. THIS is when that makes no difference (especially because the punch can't even punch through the foil or paper!!)

Thank you for the tips. I have a Martha Stewart branch punch that I am using now to make Christmas trees on greeting cards. I can't wait to use aluminum foil to sharpen it and wax paper to lubricate it. It is quickly dulling and starting to stick. Where did you purchase the Strong Arm?
@scraperfect
@scraperfect 4 жыл бұрын
The strong Arm is no longer manufactured. You'll need to keep an eye at goodwill, eBay, etc, I guess.

@@scraperfect I'll try Ebay and Etsy. BTW, I used aluminum foil to sharpen my punch and waxed paper to lubricate it. It works perfectly now. The main issue was the glitter paper I used. It was very difficult to punch. My hands are SORE!

The problem is the pot metal used in the construction is quite soft and deforms with use. Many craft cutters like this are simply designed for occasional use and will eventually fail.
@AmyCRoszak

That is probably true...and if we can extend the life and only need it for occasional use, it might last a lifetime!

Ive been very ill this winter so to treat myself I bought several crafting items on-line. One item was Memory keepers 2'' tab punch from Michael's. Reg paper didn't cut so I tried thicker cardstock and got 1 tab. It was clunky and I had to stand up to put enough pressure to cut thru. As I pushed the large teal button it went down, then back , not smooth. I tried several more times without any luck. it cuts 2 small slits (bottom sides of tab) but seems to be too tight to cut the rest. I cant send back I don't have a printer for shipping label, Im too ill to try to take to store . Brand new . I don't want to take it apart. Ill try alum foil and then wax and tell you if either works...any other suggestions? Silicone?
@scraperfect
@scraperfect 4 жыл бұрын
Maybe...but it might be more than you can create. I don't know that it is the sharpness of the blade, but I I think a fulcrum would help to use leverage which could put more pressure on the punch than you can manage even standing up. I have the Strong Arm, a very old "tool" not made any more which broke but I repaired mine with a heavy duty epoxy bandage. Until now, I forgot about it, but my DH and I talked about making one out of wood. Don't you have anyone close that can print you a label or take it back to the store??? Call Michaels.com and see if they'll mail you a return label.

@@scraperfect TY for your reply. Its not the pressure, its just too much of the metal cutting edge hitting outside the plastic opening, like its off center and wont go thru. Wax didn't work. Not sure when I ordered it, 30 days + or -, items came in 4 separate boxes, over 2 weeks and of course I left this til last, but Ill try.

@@eveny119TRY the aluminum foil and wax, and If you aren't going to return it, then I really recommend taking it apart and filing the edges a little bit. It made a world of difference for me when "normal sharpening" wouldn't work.

I'd love to know where the StrongArm comes from. I looked for it on Amazon and didn't have any luck finding it. Also, to Esther, will candles work ? I don't have any paraffin....
@scraperfect
@scraperfect 5 жыл бұрын
Susan, I bet a candle would work. The strong-arm thing came from Goodwill. Looks like they came out with a "new and improved" one that probably cost a lot more...but none seem to be available. I bet one could be made out of wood and a hinge if you are handy, or you know someone who is! I'll keep my eye out in case I see another:)

When I clicked onto the link that is supposed to be for showing us how to get a punch unstuck, it went to an advertising page for jobs and other things. Not anything about getting a punch unstuck.

Carol, I can't say why. I don't take money for advertising, but KZfaq often puts ads before vids. I am guessing it was something different bc I'm sure you know to click lower right when it says, "skip ad in 5 seconds". The link for the video is: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/i5h0aJCGxMiwk30.html
