How to fix the hairline thin line bug in Adobe Illustrator vector repeat patterns. In this video, I share how to know if the thin lines you are seeing in your vector repeat pattern-filled objects are errors in your patterns or are they just a preview bug of Adobe Illustrator.

I show you how to test for this bug, how to make sure that your vector repeat pattern tile is correctly seamless, and how to spot an actual problem with your pattern when the elements or the background are not aligned or cropped correctly.
To test if the hairline stripes are just Adobe Illustrator preview bug:
1) Fill a large circle with your seamless pattern swatch.
2) Zoom in as far as you can on one of the stripes.
3) If it disappears and does NOT become larger, you have just a preview bug and you can rest assured that your pattern is correctly seamless.
If the stripe becomes larger:
Go back to your vector pattern tile, select it with the Selection Tool (Black Arrow), and zoom in as close as you can to see if any pieces are sticking out anywhere or if the background accidentally shifted.
Fix these mistakes in your vector pattern tile and test again.

The explanation was very good, thank you for stating the differences between the problems!! However, the title of the video says "how to fix", so I was expecting an explanation of that too.

My solution is add the pattern swatch to your final shape, Object > Expand > Fill, then select entire layer, Pathfinder > Merge. This will expand the pattern so you can't edit it, so make a copy first, but it will merge all the lines from the pathfinder crop you most likely used to create the pattern.

I think it's a gpu issue I went to Edit > Preferences > Performance then ticked the gpu box and it fixed it for me

HI Oksancia.... For those with overlapping lines after pathfinder use: Set the Precision in the Pathfinder panel Options to a very small number like 0.001 pt. Voila'

I had a hairline problem when exporting a vector to a raster file. How did I fix this problem? I turned off the LZW compression (actual for export to Tiff). The file size has greatly increased and antialiasing has weakened, but the thin gaps have disappeared.

If you see no lines while in illustrator zooming in and then export a PNG and see some lines that's a bug? A little weirded out uploading my fabric pattern with seeing that line.

I'm using that magic eraser tool you are using, but when I give a background to my swatch, and then test it filling in a shape, the hairlines are there all around. When I don't have background on my swatch the there are no hairlines. I really tried so many things, I don't know how to fix this yet.

For those asking why she didn't explain how to fix the bug, she meant it actually doesn't need to be fixed. your design is totally OK. Try exporting to an image file and you will see that the lines are non existent, or try to open the ai file in inkscape and you will see that there are no lines

Hi Oksancia! I found your channel last week and I’ve learnt so much, thank you xx I’m new to pattern designing after leaving a career in teaching and deciding I want to follow my dreams 😍 You’ve given me so much inspiration as I haven’t had any proper training and am completely self taught but I’ve seen how you have become so successful and that has motivated me and given me hope that I can get there one day too! I use Inkscape atm and have noticed this on my patterns so maybe someone in the comments might have an idea on how to fix in Inkscape. Also I have a question for you, do you copyright your patterns before putting them online for sale? I’d like to start publishing but am worried about people stealing my work, has this happened to you? Sorry for the long comment but again thank you so much!!!!

Thank you very much for your kind words. I do not copyright my patterns as they are already copyrighted as I create them. I have more than 10,000 digital files and to copyright them would take a very long time and lots of money.

In case someone still have this problem I want tho share a tip that worked, at least, for me. Once the pattern was copletely finished I rasterized it (in a very high quality). You can check if it worked selecting CPU view instead of GPU view, or just converting it into a JPG or PNG file. Good luck!

save it as tiff and then put it on photoshop to save it as png\jepg worked for me

You dont perse need to use 600x600. The issue is caused by not using numbers that can divied by 2 resulting in a round integer number. If you use pixel, than work pixel perfect. For print about the same emplies. I see the issue more when the pattern or size of pattern tile is not a nice round number

It happens when you use trim, merge or divide using the pathfinder tool. Well it does for me. Turn on the GPU performance in preferences.

today i found it. the hairline. more than 10 times try to fix my pattern, but it still there. and i just remember to check the jpg file, and no hairline. so is it don't need to fix?

So I have this EXACT problem. When I copy it to Photoshop, it shows up in Photoshop. It's not just a "screen bug."

Same here - my vector file is set to 21x18" but when I export it to a PNG it's 21.007x18.007" in Photoshop. I changed my canvas size back down to 21x18" but still see a hairline in Spoonflower & Zazzle. So then I zoomed in on the edges of my PNG in PS & could see just the faintest little line... I messed with this thing for a solid hour until I finally just cropped it while zoomed all the way in. I still see just the faintest little hairline when I uploaded it into Spoonflower and Zazzle, but I'm calling it good enough, LOL. Most of my patterns are perfectly seamless, so I have no idea why this one did this.

Thank you for great videos. They help me a lot. I just found out that you can get rid of those lines by going Illustrator Preferences > General and disabling anti-aliasing. I'm not sure if I need anti-aliasing turned on for anything?

My issue is no hairlines in illustrator but hair lines show when exporting as jpeg, pdf, png, etc. This video shows nothing about how to fix hairline issues. You should retitle this "are your illustrator hairline issues a simple bug" no offence but that was a wasted 12 mins

I have just tried saving as a jpeg file changing the following setting: Anti-aliasing from Type Optimized to Art Optimized and that seems to have solved the hairline that only appeared when saving to jpeg, pdf, etc.

But what you can do is to create a pattern with no transparent block Behind.That's the cause of this problem. Play with the pathfinder to isolate the pattern and then put it in the color palette. You should succeed....you may still see a very little thin line but when you will export it in a jpg mode this time it will be ok. You won't see the previous line anymore.

The problem is of Anti-aliasing. While exporting it , to let's say .png, change anti-aliasing option from 'Type Optimized' to 'Art Optimized'. And your problem should be solved.

I explained it 2 ways in the video :) One: no fix needed as I explain why the pattern is ok as is. Two: I show how to spot if it is a real mistake and how to fix the real mistake in the end.

i think because when you create a swatch and use it , it will give you accurate result

@@ComputerTechnology073124930 Thank you. I asked, because some people do 512x512 px ( they calculate to screen sizes or smth). I always use 500x500, because it's simple, but maybe I'm wrong.

I tested various sizes and 600x600 produces good pattern tile size without slowing down my Adobe Illustrator and without making my final vector files too large to upload for sale. Hope it helps. Good luck :)
