what is the difference between wick width and thickness? Is width the length of the wick you have before you burn it? (i.e. if I usually trim to 1/4 inch, then leave more than 1/4 to resolve tunnelling?

Just wondering Charlotte - why would a candle stick collapse while burning - for example - not a container candle but a mould that’s been used to create a stick or something but when burning it the candle just collapses leaving wax puddle in dish as in more wax in dish than what’s burning……

Hello, I appreciate your help. I'd like to ask one thing, I started to make candles with palm wax and it's realy hard and had cracks. I also used cajeput oil. Do you recommend me to use stearic acid? I'd be happy if you answer this. Greetings from Portugal.
@makesyofficial
@makesyofficial 3 жыл бұрын
Hi there! Stearic acid is also very hard so this may not help. Crackling is common with palm since it is a hard, natural wax. You also want to be careful adding your own oils to the wax since they are not hydrogenated and can go bad (normally in about 12 months). Do you have access to any coconut, soy, or rapeseed wax in your area? This would help soften up your blend. You can also check out our waxes which we ship internationally.

When I first started making candles, I had a huge problem with color! It was mostly keeping inaccurate records. I wouldn't keep track of how much colorant I used therefore couldn't recreate colors. Number two my wick wouldn't work properly. I was using to much color! For a long time I was frustrated and started keeping accurate records and changed to pastel colors and solved most if not all my issues. Occasionally I want a deeper color so in those cases I'll wick up to start with and that seems to help.
@the1andonlytrav
@the1andonlytrav 3 жыл бұрын
The issue I'm having is that there are little specks of colorant at the bottom of my candles and wax melts. I heat the wax to the right temperature, I add the colorant and fragrance oil at the right temperature and I pour at the right temperature. I triple check I'm not adding too much fragrance oil too. I think it may be the fragrance oil attaching to the colorant and then it cooling too quickly. Thoughts?

Hi!! I got excited and forgot to cure my candles and it now has tunneled. How could I fix this? Should I let it cure? Will my candle still have a scent? Should I melt the top of the candle to create a smooth finish?
@makesyofficial
@makesyofficial Жыл бұрын
The tunneling is not related to the cure time but is related to the wick size. The tunneling will also not effect the scent! To help smooth the top again you can heat gun the top however we recommend moving up wick sizes in width to alleviate the tunneling!

Ah yes! Crisco and other fats will burn super quickly and super hot so you really don't need much wood material to get a good burn. We would recommend a single ply wooden wick or a cotton wick. You'll find the right one! It may just take you a bit more testing than you might have expected.

@makesyofficial

Hi there! CARBON BUILD-UP (also known as Mushrooming) Is exactly that, the glop of carbon build-up on a wick.This happens with the candle is unable to burn fast enough to keep up with your chosen wick. Typically a wick that is too big causes more wax to be sent to the flame than it can handle.

What about when you pour the fragrance oil in the candle wax once the wax dries all of the oil is at the very bottom of the candle like it didn’t even absorb or mix with the wax at all?
@makesyofficial
@makesyofficial Жыл бұрын
This means that your mix and pour temp may have been off or you didn't mix long enough! Or you could have used too much fragrance for your wax type. We recommend a 8-12% fragrance load for most wax types but always check your wax to find our the fragrance load. Ensure you're mixing for at least 2 minutes and pouring at the appropriate mix and pour temps. You can remelt this candle in a double boiler and try re-mixing the wax and fragrance!

Big funnel shaped dip in the center around the wick when dried?
@makesyofficial
@makesyofficial 3 ай бұрын
It sounds like you have a sink hole! Hold a heat gun (a hair dryer also works) over the top of your candle to melt the surface. As the wax starts to melt, poke at the sinkhole with a chopstick (or a similarly shaped object) to determine the size of your sinkhole. Sometimes, what looks like a tiny hole can actually be a lot bigger under the surface. Puncture the wax to allow melted wax to fill the open cavity. Once the cavity is filled and the surface of the candle wax is nice and flat again, allow your candle to cool back down to room temperature.

I can't believe I'm just seeing this video. I often have the wax pull away from the inside of cement vessels and just recently the wax pulled away on some ceramic vessels. @makesyofficial
@makesyofficial Жыл бұрын
Great question! If the wax is pulling away it's cooling too fast - so likely you're pouring at too cool a temperature and your vessels are super cold. We'd recommend making sure your ambient room temp is at least 60 F and you can try gently passing over the vessels with a heat gun prior to pouring. Cement specifically holds the cold so those may be a little harder.

My candles keep breaking every time I take them out the mold. Could someone please help on how I can stop this from happening

I think that's because the wax has hardened but it hasn't shrunk. I think we need a wax that shrinks if we want to use molds Don't take my word for it though, I'm very new to candle making...

My biggest trouble is my candles keep sinking after cooling. Is this because of the temperature I’m pouring them at??
@makesyofficial
@makesyofficial 2 жыл бұрын
Sinkholes can occur with any wax type, however they are most common with soy waxes. You can easily fix them by going over the candle with a heat gun!

Hi, I'm starving on my candle business. And i have paraffin wax, sent to me instead of soy wax, either way, I'm getting white spots once it gets hard. What an I doing wrong putting at 180
@makesyofficial
@makesyofficial Жыл бұрын
Paraffin has a much different melt point than soy wax so make sure you reference the optimal mix and pour temp for your specific type.

@makesyofficial

Oh no! This can happen when pouring too cool. It's difficult to fix pillars once they are already made so we recommend melting it down and re-pouring at a higher temp!

This is likely due to the wax cooling too fast :) try pouring at a lower temp and keeping the ambient room temp consistent if you're not already!
