Wow!!! So great! (I'm definitely doing this and I hadn't seen it anywhere until now, I was confused because it definitely wasn't the waiter serve, but I had no way of breaking it down to the idea of accelerating around the trophy position and never seeing the drop)

Just like with the waiter serve video, you manage to give a solution that makes me think: Why did i not think of that earlier? It’s so satisfying to learn how to play tennis this way, it all instantly clicks. Great vid.

I have been struggling with shallow drop on my serve for MONTHS. That isolated wrist movement you mentioned is precisely my problem. I open my wrist slightly before dropping my racquet which then creates an awkward angle for my drop hence making it shallow. Thank you so much for this video!! Can’t wait to get back on the court and try the flexed wrist prep to address the issue. Great content!!

Thank you thank you thank you! This absolutely anwers my question to you about a month ago regarding the racket drop. Nobody had even answered me if it is something happening naturaley because of the serve motion or if it is something i need to make it happen. Btw i adapted to the lag serve on my own because nothing else worked for me to not have the leak. Kyrgios serve is a perfect example of the lag serve.

Thanks for the enlightening video! Krgios' serve is interesting.. he accelerates through the motion a lot earlier so he doesn't appear to ever hold on a trophy position.. his dominant arm moves in one high powered motion from low until ball contact. It's a really efficient and talented motion. We're rightly taught to break the serve up into manageable movements, because it is a difficult stroke.. but can't deny his movement has an efficient energy flow through from start to finish. The timing needed to serve like that is insane. Thought it is of interest as he has one of the strongest serves in the game for his height. An example of minimal energy 'leak' in the motion.
@inopig6237

Kyrgios is a great example of serving with a big lag. His racquet remains pointing down at the ground until a few moments after the toss is released. This allows him to do the whole takeback and swing in one fluid motion. Karlovic does the same, the racquet stays down until the ball is almost at its peak.

Excellent analysis and recommendations. May I suggest that one additional reason for racket drop leak (clever labeling) is a toss that is too high, thereby requiring servers to pause or slow the racket drop when they reach the trophy position while they wait until the ball descends closer to the contact point.

I had this problem of “pausing” and not accelerating at the right time . I think it came from seeing photographs of hundreds and hundreds of players (pros in particular) in trophy position. So whenever I did a serve, I’d pause in that trophy position because of the photos I’d seen. It really messed me up for many years. Thankfully, I’m starting to break this bad habit. My serve mechanics is one complete fluid motion from start to finish .... like yours!!

Hey Nikola, I am watching all your serve videos - so helpful. You really go to the highest level of detail .r.t. biomechanics - like it. Now I have discovered an important difference between your opinion and the of the Florian Meyer team- which also does a great job in teaching serves. While you are advocating the trophy pose as the control point plus racket drop then happening automatically, the Meyer team argues against focusing on the trophy position and instead emphasizes the importance of the fluid motion and the racket going to the left (for tight handers) - not calling it a drop at all. I would say that both motions are not far away from each other - can you comment and help me to reconcile?
@tenniscoach

Hi nikola i follow your channel for awhile and i like your theoretical and practical approach to your coaching philopsophy.. i happy to say i also adopted and/or modified some of your teaching methods. WRT to racket drop leak u mentioned here i would look at it as firing the kinetic chain optimally. If u compare the forehand receiving preparation where we try to minimise the backswing and timing the wrist lag to be in time with the forward rotation of upper body.. u will notice the similarity of actions with the serve upward and forward rotation timing with the racket drop. In other words the racket drop happens after the upward and forward rotation fires.

Do you have any tips on how to be more relaxed with the arm on the serve? Basically, not using the arm but making it so the arm movement is a byproduct of what the body is doing. It seems so simple but it's harder for someone who hasn't done this from the beginning of when they started playing. Do you have a video or have tips on this?

would you say the last thing you control with your motion is your arms going into trophy, from there as you accelerate you are throwing the racket at the ball, just not letting go ha ha! I will try this again forgot what went wrong last time, I struggle with early racket drop, so I just serve from a trophy, lag should stop problem. My arm just wants to go as soon as ball goes up! Thanks for video!

Do you move your body before moving your arm on the acceleration portion of your serve? I feel like that is the key to make sure your elbow is higher than the racket in the final part of the serve.

I'm a coach at my local tennis club, there's a friend of mine who takes lessons from a couple of pros there. She has a bad tendency to get to the racquet drop or "back scratch" part of her serve and just sit there until she hits her serve. Pretty much she accelerates extremely quickly with her ball toss and to the racquet drop position and then completely stops her service motion. 0-100 she then goes for her serve. I believe her ball toss is too high and this is why she pauses, but a pause isnt necessarily bad it's just the position she pauses at. Any tips on how to fix this in a student?

Sorry to burst your bubble, but there is usefulness to the "scratch your back" notion (i.e., racquet drop leak as you choose) if you employ the neutral wrist versus the pronated wrist for your service motion. Yes, there are 6-actions to the wrist, which originate from the neutral wrist. The neutral wrist is the fastest way to move the arm across the body as in a throw or a serve. Unfortunately, 99.99% of tennis instructors don't realize this; having little knowledge of physics in connection to human biomechanics. That's what I do as The Nutty Professor of Sports: show-how physics know-how can improve sports performance.
