How to Fix USB Device Not Recognized in Windows 10

Want to know what to do when a USB Device Is Not Recognized in Windows 10? USB connection errors, such as Error Code 43 message is very common. This error is caused by faulty hardware, out of date software, driver issue and conflicts. There are a couple of common types of yellow exclamation mark errors, one is the device has no driver and windows don’t recognize the device without it, the device might be named which is a good sign and easier to fix then the later USB problem, where the device is unknown to windows.
So, let’s start troubleshooting this USB problem:
1. Remove all USB devices from the computer apart from Keyboard and Mouse.
2. Try changing port and changing USB cable
3. Try updating windows
4. Try running Hardware and Devices Troubleshooter tool
5. Try updating drivers for all USB Hubs and USB Root
6. Try uninstalling drivers for all USB Hubs and USB Root and restart computer
7. Try Roll Back Drivers option if available, windows may of updated your driver and now it don’t work.
8. Download drivers from the hardware manufacturer website
9. Try flashing motherboard BIOS
10. Download latest USB chipset drivers and USB drivers from motherboard manufacturer website
11. Check for USB 3 and USB 2 compatibility, also check to make sure you are using the right USB cable if it’s a old device.
12. Check Hardware id code and search to find the correct driver
13. Check to see if hardware is even compatible with Windows 10

Thank you! I've been looking for a fix, watched many KZfaq to no avail. I tried your msdt.exe solution and it worked! Now my wireless mouse and my USB microphone are recognized by Win 10. I think the devices are not defective, but the USB port driver was. Thanks again. from Philippines.

I also tried it by msdt. However, my computer finds errors but does not correct them. Restart it and everything but, however it does not download / install anything.

And now you are making several backups right ?! One online ; one kept outside of the house with a trusted person and one ready to grab if you have to leave in a hurry. And yes ,do it on a SSD (Solid State Drive ) ;safer, studier and more room. Maybe keep one in the bank in a safety deposit box as well. Your're welcome :) A harddisk or USB ,it is not if they fail but when...!

Excellent information to troubleshoot. Thank you bunches. Had that problem intermittently with a USB hard drive. It turned out that not all USB ports are equal. The drive didn't get enough power.

Thanks for the timely vid Brian, I had this issue last Sunday, the only thing that fixed it was changing the drive letter of my USB Flash Drive --> Control Panel\Administrative Tools\Computer Management\Storage\Disk Management.

what's your opinion iobit driver booster I know if you're using old or new hardware you can go and get the latest drivers from the manufacturer's or use the CD drivers that came with the hardware. is driver booster recommended as safe because I haven't seen any up-to-date reviews on the software

Thank you so much! I had a problem with my Steinberg eLicenser which was not recognised after a cold reboot until I physically reconnected the device when the computer was already finished booting. For me the problem was fixed when I tried Windows PowerShell. Cudos to you for sharing your knowledge, I highly appreciate it!

What's interesting though is (which I want to add to my previous writing) that it seems to also depend on which ports are being used. E. g. when I utilized the USB port inside my computer, the PowerShell diagnostic was not able to fix those problems which reappeared when I plugged the dongle into this port. Also it was not recognised when the port next to the eLicenser's was used by another USB device (in this case my iLok key). Very strange but now it works and I will refuse touching my hardware again.

Didn't get fixed by this, but fixed it during the video? does that count? I had troubles with a rift s VR headset and all I had to do was push the plug that was connected into the rift s in a bit more since it'd came out a bit

Thank you for this video! Your style is very clear and concise, perfect for these tutorials! I faced this issue while using an old wireless receiver for Xbox 360 controllers. Essentially, after some use, the receiver would be identified by windows as an unknown usb device, and I wouldn't be able to manually select the drivers for it as windows would automatically find the "best" drivers. Turns out that uninstalling the device from the hidden devices list gets rid of the issue. So instead of an "unknown usb device" windows would only classify it as an "unknown device" which allowed me to manually pick the right drivers. Not exactly the use case you described, but it worked nonetheless! I'll make sure to check out your other videos as well!

One thing I did was, Go into Disk Management I found out that my USB had unallocated space on it. So I right clicked on where it said "Unallocated" and clicked on New Simple Task and just clicked NEXT all the way to the end. And after that I formated the USB device by right clicking on it and clicking on format. And was recognized again. Hope this helps you guys. (Keep in mind that this will wipe clean your USB device)

Would this also be because of the port just being ‘worn out’ or damaged? Because i plugged the device into a different port and it worked fine, it also worked when i plugged it into a different computer.

You also see something like that when the device is to far away the computer and the voltage drop across the wire is to much, so you either self power with a 5 /12 volt power supply or use a USB hub Posted on Facebook Bye for now Cheers

What about when it only sometimes recognizes the device? For instance I have (or at least had untill I got so mad with it that I smashed it) a webcam. Sometimes when I plugged it into the USB it worked fine, other times I'd plug it in and the computer hasn't a clue what it is. Every time I plugged that webcam in there was a 50/50 chance it would work.

Same here. Tried everything. My laptop is now next to useless as I can't connect any devices to it. Mouse, headset, arduino....nothing, I'm so angry right now. It was all fine, then I had to do a restart for updates, then it instantly threw up the USB error :( It now sits there with nothing plugged in, going through endless cycles of telling me "a device was plugged it" (it wasnt) then followed byt the "device is not recognised" window...over and over again. does windows update have something to do with the device(usb) being unrecognized? i used to transfer files in windows 7 before without this error, but when i switched to windows 10 this error just showing up. And here;s the thing, when i am restoring my system my usb is now working fine.

HEY i bought a new mouse recently first time it showed the error un recognised but next time it was fine. now it works sometime and other it shows the error. is it a hardware problem or a physical problem

Its probably a hardware problem, because its trying to be compatible with your device, same with my mic it works sometimes, but othertimes it doesnt currently it doesnt work anymore to any extent no matter what i do

I have a Dell Optiplex Mt i7. I just installed a Host Controller Card with 3x USB 3.0 and 1 USB-C. Its plugged into the pcie slot and connected to the sata power 15 pin. It has the driver installed via the CD it came with. It IS detected by the PC and says it IS working properly. BUT when I plug anything in to any of the ports, it will read for a second then stop... then read again then stop. Sometimes just read then stop and thats it. What do I do???? Thanks.
