Remember kids, tie a knot with the draw string before you throw your pants into the wash to avoid this problem.

I tie my pants in a double knot then put them on the very top of my wash load. I never have this problem. However, when the time arises that I must replace my string, this is the best way. Well done Keenan.

I solved this problem years ago by buying Orgin Gi pants with the Swiveloc belt.

Or just staple the end instead of knotting , then remove the staple when pulled through. When your near a stapler obviously. Or tape maybe. Knots are so 1990s.
