What are your thoughts on removing the old lawn? Rather than core aeration, I think I have to rototill because I have widespread shrub and tree roots invading my turf area.

leftheaded wow I have the same I have a horrible tree that grows roots and forms more tress. I have ripped a lot up but Ima just jay down more dirt and hope for the best when I start the Reno. I'm facing like 20 basketball size holes in my yard now, I'm wondering if i should fill it with rocks first. Dirt just makes a big wet sludge aft rain. Things I'd do for level lawns lol. Mine is on a angle 😫

I nuked my old lawn that was mostly weeds. I just used a power raked everything out of it so it's only dirt. my question is.. is there something I can add to soil when I level it to improve it? any help would be appreciated. I live in North Idaho if that makes a difference.

Great video. I’m doing a renovation on my lawn starting in September. Ryan, what would you suggest for a inexpensive manual reel mower?
@greghuizen
@greghuizen 4 жыл бұрын
@@leftheaded ideally, you'd kill the existing grass and then rototill to ensure that nothing comes back through. If you're okay with the grass you had growing, then killing off might not be necessary. Your renovation will just be a mix of your new seed and potentially old grass

Thanks for the video on the DIY sprinkler system. I actually used that to install a complete irrigation around my very weirdly shaped lawn back in the spring. I added some connected timers that do weather adjusting. It took a couple months of measuring with catch cups and adjusting the configuration, but I got it dialed in, and now I have a "set and forget" irrigation system that uses less water to do a better job. Next year, I'm probably going to do the work to take it in-ground and install a valve box and single unit connected controller.

I like watching your videos, not only for the blue collar information, but the fact that you don't hide the essentials. You show the labor, you're honest about the variables. And you have the best lawn hands down. After glyphosate, a torch would've saved you a lot of labor from dethatch. Plus you'll get a free dose of carbon!. I'm a beginner but I couldn't hold back from torching

Nice detailed tutorial. I like using a 50/50 mix of organic compost and peat moss to lightly cover and protect the seed. I've used the EZ straw w/tack in the past, but often there's seed heads mixed in and will germinate, but dies off eventually. Otherwise protects well. Good luck with the neighbor's reno. And pray for no downpours. ~ mike

Great video man! I just completed renovation myself this weekend. I followed the exact same steps, except that I didn't kill any of the existing grass. I used 50/50 mix topsoil and compost for leveling. Used combination of blankets and peat moss for seed coverage. Made a make shift sprinkler system (similar to yours) that cover every sq inch of my lawn. Now I am just watering three times a day and waiting to put down some more tenacity if I see any weeds pop up. You are an inspiration, keep up the great work!

I've been following your channel since November 2019 when we bought our house in Central Illinois and I gotta say, you have really opened my eyes to lawn care. I check out KZfaq tutorials like anyone else and I always seem to revert back to your videos. Very thorough, informative and you don't ram sponsored products down my throat when I'm just trying to learn from someone else's mistakes. I recently pulled the trigger on a DIY in ground sprinkler system to help with watering for my fall tall fescue overseed (so my wife doesn't have to water while I'm at work) and based most of it off of advice and insight I've gathered from your tutorials and videos. I never imagined I would be so into lawn care, let alone taking on such a huge project by myself but it really came together. I appreciate all of the information and insight and always look forward to learning from your renovations. Thanks for taking the time to make all of these videos and no matter what the wife says, its worth it!

Well put together video, Ryan. I just started a mini-reno/overseed project this past Friday, and the only extra step I would add (though it may not be a problem for everyone) is: Bird protection! Despite trying several kinds of seed coverings, I still seem to get flocks of birds pecking at my precious seed. I have found that the random movement of foil-style party balloons (from the dollar store) staked around the yard work well, though the store attendant will look at you funny when you tell them what they're for - not to mention your neighbors will think you're throwing a week long birthday party.

Completely agree with the issue with the birds. Where I live, there are tons of them, they are big and can easily eat a few pounds. Without the top dressing soil, I would have little chance of any success.

Ryan, I am SO TEMPTED to do this to our lawn, especially the front lawn (approximately 100 ft x 100 ft) as it could be a showstopper of a lawn! It is hilled where our house sits atop and has a nice wooded backdrop with smaller side and back lawns somewhat hidden from a passerby's view. We live in a nice neighborhood in the lakes region of New Hampshire and this lawn was hammered and then neglected by the previous family who owned it prior to our purchase in 2018. My retired neighbor seems to have taken some of your advice about lawns - his is a wicked pissa'h of a lawn! If I go this route, I would definitely think about putting in an in-ground watering system! Thank you so much for the hard work you put into your research and with these videos, podcasts, etc.. it's nice to know someone out there is just as crazy as I am about beautiful lawns!

I've had good results mixing compost and peat moss 50/50 in a barrel spreader (I use the same one shown in the video here). I turn it together in a wheelbarrow (no need to over stir it, the barrel roller will take care of it - just get it integrated), then dump it in the barrel and start laying it down. The spreader leaves just the right amount. Seems to be a good mix for providing plenty of organic nutrients while also managing moisture during germination.

Fantastic video, very clear & to the point. I'm at the prep stage of my renovation, going to be putting down a 2nd dose of non-selective herbicide this weekend, to kill the old grass. Had a question for the yard enthusiasts: I have an electric dethatcher, as well as an electric tiller. Should I just dethatch the yard once the grass is dead or till the area, as well, to get rid of as much of the old turf as possible? Thanks in advance!

Seeking advise. I’ve seen all you videos and they are super informative. I recently had major work to back yard. The bob cat damaged my front lawn so decided to stop watering to start fresh. I’m stuck between aeration or using tiller to remove old grass since half was sunk in by bobcat an is all dirt now. If I can send pics to give better illustration let me know. Btw I live in Southern California and also wondering what seed is best for the climate. Well thanks for all the information.

I liked the Futerra Netless blanket you used on your last home renovation and plan to use it on my renovation. I know you said some of it you pulled up some and some was left in place. Definitely the best and most detailed lawn renovation video out there! So thankful you made it so simple and clear. I’m currently renovating my jungle of a lawn that has so many different types of grass/crabgrass and every weed you can think of... I’m in the process of killing everything off but some clusters of thick finger grass still lingers. Do you ever suggest using a tiller to get rid of these types of grasses? Or possibly using the tiller to help level a small lawn?
@ryanknorrlawncare
@ryanknorrlawncare 3 жыл бұрын
You can use a tiller. The issue typically means it might bring even more weed seeds to the surface as well as settling more after tilling since the ground will be softer.

I started mine the 5th of July on 3 properties. I scalped it first then sprayed KillZall (double recipe and some Dawn), to wipe out really thick areas of Creeping Charlie. 85-90% of the grass and CC died within 7 days, but after a couple rains CC was still popping up and you could almost tell which underground veins didn't want to cooperate. I doubled the dosage and hit them again about 2 weeks later I still had a bit of it so one more time. Man that stuff is tuff. I did one yard this past Wednesday and another one today after the rain last night which really helped out as I am running a roto tiller. Hopefully the mistake it seems like I may have done is kicking any dead grass seed down in the lawn but I didn't noticed this grass being 'in seed'. It's Charlie that I am worried about. After working these small lots for most of the afternoon, I planted a 4 mix of KY Bluegrass, with "sissy" rye to give some eye candy to those (fiance) who keep asking "are we there yet" as to when the grass will come up. I too used the big box top soil to level ($1.67 at HD currently) and some all black potting mix near the drive/sidewalk to the house to make it pop (yes I have OCD).

Thank you for your videos. I always like your videos are detailed and easy. I live in New Jersey and bought a new house. I would like to redo the whole lawn front back. I have a lot of patches nearly no grass. What is the grass you recommend and where I can buy a quantity because it’s about 2 to 3000 ft.².

After you scalp the lawn, maybe power rake, if you want to kill off any grass or weeds that may still be present will glyphosate inhibit the growth of the seed you will sow? Whether a blanket or spot spraying application? Thinking about renovating my yard later in the summer closer to fall. Thanks Ryan!

Ryan, summer is begging to wind down and I'm preparing to spot seed for fall. I've been watching your videos and they're very helpful. Do you have a video of a sample annual schedule? A quick all in one how to guide (annual schedule). You definitely have enough content to throw something together. I believe this would be extremely popular, especially with us lawn novices.

Hey Ryan, on the leveling could I use a soil sand mix? Something like 80/20? The reason I ask is that I’ve heard top soil settles after a while (obviously) and I have a fairly bumpy lawn. I just want to smooth it a little this year and then a little bit more next season and so on...

Killed the front lawn, tilled it (it was what I had) and seeded in WV Sunday. We got 5 inches of rain in 4 days. Gotta love it 😂
