I'm a beginner. WhenI started doing some rudiments, I noticed my left hand has a bad habit of doing circles instead of going up and down. It's like I'm drawing circles or ovals with the drum stick. It's really annoying I have to slow down to nearly 40bpm just to get it to be as good as my right hand. It's the first road block I've hit in my learning. I can't do fills property. Anyway thanks for the advice I will practice the hell outta my left hand.

i have nerv damage so i tape the sticks to my hands. looks stupid, sounds awful but it is the only way for me to play. on my right hand i have it straight up, like an extended finger (between index and middle finger), becaue i think i can play a little more "easy" through the wrist. but yeah, i don´t know of any magical exercise to fix that - get bandmates that understand and are forgiving maybe? anyhow. have a nice day everybody

I am also doubly damned, I had severe trauma to my left hand (lost the tip of my little finger, severe scarring on the ring finger and fused top joint of my middle finger). I found that my control was very poor but keep working it when ever I first sit down at the kit. I have found that larger diameter sticks allow me to control the rhythm better, also (even though it increases the friction on the stick) I use some inexpensive course cloth tape on the stick. Don't give up!

Take a bar of 8th notes leading with the dominant hand. Play 8th notes up to beat 3 than replace the 4 + beat for a triplet. (RL RL RL RLR LR LR LR LRL etc) playing triplets on the last beat forces you to lead with your weaker hand on the next measure. Do this for 15 mins every day over a month and your weaker hand will improve. Slow tempo first (50bpm +) then gradually move up when ready. alternatively pick a song or backing track you really like at a slow tempo and run through the exercise while listening to the music 👍

Finger control! My left hand has trouble doing anything more after the rebound settles which causes me to try and use this whipping motion a lot in my playing. I think it contributes to trouble with volume control and speed. Thanks Stephen! BTW I was working on beat #1 from Neil Peart series last night, I love it! Kind of funky to lead with the kick. Have a great weekend with the Fam!

Awesome! Been playing a lifetime (not good at all), and musicians who said "I'm in a rut" including me, was not doing as you teach with i i T. So we play the same thing over & over which is giving up. Nothing stays the same..our playing is always either expanding or contracting. To expand i i P is the key working hard on our specific weak areas. Great Lesson Steven!

Thank you for touching on this subject Stephen. I realized early on that I had an overall weakness as opposed to general dexterity in my left hand and wrist. So I eventually did what you have suggested, but started out by strengthening my wrist and fingers muscles. For that I use a squeeze ball and a powerball for my wrist. I then spend 10 minutes grooving around the kit with only my left hand. 3 months later and the results are just incredible. Once I had the strength, I started isolating. A mirror helps immensely, I could not only feel but see where my left hand was lagging. Also playing singles and doubles with both hands doing the same stroke helps to emphasize the short comings and to try and mimick the stronger hand. Patience, patience, patience added into the mix.

4:47 "my fulcrum's cool" That needs to be on a t shirt! :D 2 cents: sometimes the hands are just fine, sometimes you just need to learn the song better, that'll stop you from fidgeting and blaming everything else! I found this time and again, once I know what I'm playing, the hands seem to be just fine, no more locking, no more cramps, fast single handed 16ths are alright, etc!

Great vid! Thanks to your "iip" method, I found that my biggest problem with my weak hand is my wrist. I've been working for some time now on my weak hand. Spending some time playing open handed and concentrating on exercises from "stick control" that contain more lefts than rights. But the skies opened up when I identified and began to isolate my left wrist. I mean it was so far behind my right that I wondered how I even played drums all these years. I think I just compensated with more fingers and elbow. So now I spend some time each day just playing single stroke taps with only wrist action. No fingers, elbows or bouncing in the fulcrum. At first it was hard and my left wrist was very "jumpy" for lack of a better word. But it's only been a week and I'm seeing improvement already. And believe it or not, it is harder for me at slower tempos rather than faster ones.

Thank you Stephen! I've played a lot of guitar hero as a kid, and thus my fingers on my left hand are faster, more precise and more flexible than the fingers on my right hand. The example of isolation finally helped me understand these issues I have in my technique and I realized that I can't move my right pinky without moving my ringfinger, which I can do with my "weaker", left hand. I've been playing for a loooonnnggg time lol. Professionally I'm a full time musician. When I started I was largely self taught and played right hand over the left blah blah blah. In all this time I STILL have a severe "slice" in my left hand. Its been so bad for so long that I've actually started playing with a left foot snare. I do my backbeat stuff with it and use my left hand for fills and ghost notes. I've come to believe my slice developed from playing with my right hand on the hats and left on the snare. When you play like that your left hand can't come up high to make the big backbeat on 2 and 4 so it "learns" a funky path to travel. I grew up playing metal and my early bands were loud. So my left hand issue is severe slicing when coming up to play a backbeat. I've completely stopped putting my hats in the usual position years ago and use a cable hi-hat so as to play my hats to the right of my kit. Been working on the movement of my left since giving it a break with the foot snare. Still struggling with it though. Cool thing in all of this is the foot snare has freed up my left so I can manipulate the click track and play percussion parts on a trigger pad. But yeah, would love to get my left hand to be able to play the larger motions correctly. If I play with my left on the snare, which some songs require, I can play it just fine musically speaking but it tenses up and I can't fight the slice and wind up playing with my wrist bent and almost crippled looking just to get through it lol. That makes for one tight forearm muscle!

I don't have the strength and coordination in my left hand. So I'm trying to correct this by doing hand exercises and doing more work outs on the pad with my left hand. It's getting better but I'm not going to be satisfied until it's equal to my right. But after watching this video, I'm going to start trying to do other daily tasks with my left hand that I would normally do with my right. Thanks for the suggestion!

@@wikuslombard6373 I discovered that a hair tie could change everything.. I wrap it once around my middle finger between the first and second joint and then just loop one strand around my thumb just inside the first joint.. then the stick goes under the hair tie.. If I lose the grip between my thumb and FIRST finger the tie 'catches' the stick and keeps it from flying backwards.. If that isn't clear I can try again.. This little detail has given me a hope I had just about given up on.

The hardest things I found were: stirring a cup of coffee, using a computer mouse (particularly the fingers), using a knife to cut anything and scissors. I'm almost ambidextrous now. It also seems to have translated to me feet. When snow boarding I don't have a preference (regular or goofy).

Here's a trick that's worked for me very well. Set your kit up left handed and play it for three months straight. That's it! Once you've done the three months, switch back over whenever you think it will help break through a level.

One of the main things I have always tried to do is daily activities with my non-dominant hand (left.) It helps just to keep strength and coordination up if anything. As far as drums set up just kick, snare, and hi-hat on the opposite side and crossover that way. You also end up with left footed kick but that’s ok. Start out with your hands and then incorporate your feet. Build dexterity and you should be able to have independence with time.

On my left hand I have 2 fingers that has nerve damage. I have little control with the last 2 fingers and the whole hand is a lot weaker. I can not get my left hand to do a good drum role. got a finger grip to squeeze just like the one they have to build up finger strength for guitar and have good luck but I have to deal with the nerve damage with a much weaker hand than my right.

Really good lesson Stephen! For me I think it's more of a genetical thing, how my hands are built. I can't really use my pinkies in a good way in my technique. I have quite big palms, but in proportion, short thick fingers, where I just can't seem to get my pinkies to reach the stick in a good way, if I'm holding the sticks as I'm supposed to. They're more or less out of the game. So I have to rely on index, middle and ring finger. That may be partially the reason why I can't seem to improove my hand speed and precision in doubble strokes, or other more demanding rudiments.

i noticed that my left wrist is what makes playing in time and playing faster diffudult because it is stiffer. I also have been playing guitar for years so my right wrist is already used to being looser because of strumming patterns. I've been doing stretches for my wrists but does anyone have any other suggestions rather than just extra practice and repetition on the left.

IIP! This! I've started playing a 16th note groove and since my left is always on the HH I'd rather stay in matched grip with it (I'm usually traditional). I know there's an issue: everytime my left goes matched my wrist is going to get sore. So what's up ? Basically I grip harder when there's a stroke and more so when it's an accent. My right hand smoothly opens up and follows the stick closesly without choking it. I'm doing some exercises from Stick Control (which is really rudiments...), I'm fairly bang on when playing traditional and working on growing my tempo over them now, so here's a new twist: I'll do all possible left hand accents over the basic rudiments in matched grip, until my left has absorbed that movement, so I will go back to my 16th note groove and play the left hand bit right. Bonus: since I'm coming from a groove to an exercise I have a strong motivation to pull it. It's a bit disheartening the first times you notice that it's not just about learning the notes and that relatively simple grooves require you to step back and go to the pad to fix issues. But that's the way it is, gotta stay humble.

Yeah, mine is a strength issue. I had a severed tendon in my left wrist years back and I realized that my stick barely stays straight when I'm playing. It bounces all around every which way when I'm not fully grasping the stick. I'm isolating and playing on my practice pad for hours now while I watch youtube videos and read. So far I'm actually feeling it getting stronger by the day.

I have noticed that when I play single triplets my right hand can play more precise at a faster rate than my left. As soon as I speed up with my left hand the stick bounces off the edges and hits the wood on my practice pad as well as hitting my right stick. I have tried investigating the problem... My fingers my wrist trying to stay relaxed but I can't seem to figure it out. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

My left hand is my "weak" hand, I am having trouble findin a middle ground with the fulcrum. Either my thumb and index or thumb and middle finger, depending on how I'm playing, are way too tight and causes to much friction or it's way too loose and the stick spins or I lose the fulcrum. I notice the stick spins in my right had but does not move from the fulcrum.

my left hand is "weaker" in the sense that it has poorer technique and therefore it has more injuries/carpal tunnel/elbow issues. When I do stuff with ghost notes and accent with the left hand the technique is great, but when I switch over to backbeat drumming with the left hand I forget all about the technique and switch to bashing which I'm trying to correct

So for the Last week or so I have been working on doubles from a video you shared. And my doubles are better spacing speed etc. But I still dont have a lot of stick control with my weak hand. Middle finger and ring finger are okish on both hands and that's where my best doubles come from. But to play as I would in a gig scene I dont get the bounce. Or if I do its crushed. I just may need to give it more time. I can honestly tell a difference already in stamina in weak hand. Just cant help thinking I still have an issue. My weak hand thumb tends to go numb after a few minutes. Could I be gripping to hard once I'm really into the groove. ?? It also makes the doubles sound crushed after a bit

Look Stephen, I've always been curious about a thing of mine that I've "Done wrong" my right hand is the dominant, but as stupid as I am I've started playing left handed, I use my right hand for accents, and that's good because my ghost notes are Luke Holland level clean, but the problem is that everytime I wanna start a fill my right hand wants to take control and start it, at this point I'm not insane good doing fills but I'm decent I can do well, but whenever I switch my kit around and try to fill I just do much better, I can do everything I wanna do, but I just can't play well the snare with the left hand, what would you do in my position, change my kit around and focus on left hand work, or working on starting fills with the left on the left handed kit? My footwork is fine I can do fast triplets with both legs.

5:48 That's a pretty big thing for me. In fact, I _knew_ it was going to happen when I started drumming, so I actually set my drum set up the first time with my ride on the left and played 100% left lead. Didn't do a thing. Even though I was only just starting and didn't develop any muscle memory, it didn't sit right (heh heh) until I eventually switched to right hand. My right hand does not have the finesse for ghost notes that my left hand does, and my left hand does not have the relatively clean Moeller stroke on the hi-hat that my right hand does. However, my individual hand speed _is_ very close between them, and my doubles and triples are about matched. But a fast left-lead fill...my right hand wants to dominate that downbeat 16th or 32nd, and I've been spending some time sitting and playing left lead whatever I could think of on my snare on and off for a while now. However, it's just a hobby for me: I don't play in any bands or anything: I just sit and play to MP3s or just improvise, and I _am_ way farther along than I ever thought I'd get, and I do much enjoy playing, which is what really matters to me, so it's not really a problem! Also, great advice, as usual! i've learned a pretty good number of things from your videos.
