How to Flip Mirrored Videos with VLC

What is a mirrored video?
A video with a mirror effect basically appears as if it were reflected on a mirror. In the same way you notice nothing strange when you look yourself in the mirror, it's difficult to notice a video has a mirror effect.
Any text appear in the video (e.g logos, captions, letter or books) however will immediately confirm whether the video is mirrored. This is because the text will appear upside down unlike a picture whose elements merely appear on the opposite sides when reflected.
VLC corrects this by flipping horizontally the video thus undoing the mirror effect.

Is there a way to use VLC to permanently undo mirror changes to the video?

Unfortunately no. You'll have to edit the video with a video editor to undo the mirror effect. I have written a post on my blog on how to do this using VirtualDub: www.journeybytes.com/unlfip-mirrored-videos-using-virtualdub/

@@JourneyBytes Got this error message - CLI: Unable to launch video encoder:The system cannot find the file specified.

That error has to do with the external encoders. Do this, go to VirtualDub - Options - External Encoders... - Encoders tab double click all the profiles and make sure the Program box points to the correct path to ffmpeg.exe. For example, if you've installed Ffmpeg for 64bit windows, the path to the executable should be in C:\Program Files\ffmpeg\bin\ffmpeg.exe

Hello, which version of VLC are you using? This tutorial uses the desktop version from here: www.videolan.org/vlc/download-windows.html and not the universal app from Microsoft Store.

Thank you for sharing. I found this, but I was looking for a video that shows how to mirror-flip screen display during livestream - maybe someone can help? I need an app that FLIPS THE SCREEN VIEW DURING VIDEOCONFERENCING! Anyone have any suggestions? Here's why. I teach tai chi on Zoom (physical instruction). When I put my students in breakout rooms to work with their group (there are different group levels in my school), SOME of the fellow participants look REVERSED to iPad users. I want my iPad users to be able to FLIP/Mirror-flip what they see on their screen when one person is LEADING the group within that breakout room group. Then I want them to EASILY be able to flip the screen-view back the other way. Most of these iPad users are not tech savvy, so I want to recommend an APP to them that does this easily. I've asked all around, and still, no one has an answer. Best if app is FREE. Any advice??

Hello Loretta, unfortunately I have little experience with iOS so I don't know of an app that would be able to help your students. Nevertheless, I think your options will be limited since its the streaming app that's both transmitting & decoding the video, so ideally it would be the one best placed to do the unflipping through a built in effect or something similar. For that reason I think it may be more feasible to fix the problem before the streaming happens assuming the students are doing something thats causing this effect.

@@JourneyBytes So I had an MP4 file and when i went to flip it, it worked but it changed to a different file type after that was done for some reason

As far as I know this is just a temporary setting that is applied onto the video so it shouldn't in any way modify the actual source video. To which file format was it changed to?
