#HOUSEPLANTS #BACKTOBASICS EP. 1: flushing your houseplants - it is a step you can take to refresh and prepare your plants' soil before you start fertilizing them again for the growing season.
Flushing your houseplants is a process where you get rid of the salt and hard water mineral build up from your soil due to watering. It is also the process used to get rid of excess nutrients from over fertilization.
You only have to do this for plants you do not plan on repotting, and while there are solutions or special water (filtered, distilled, ph6 water) you can use to flush your plants, using water you use to water it normally suffices.

Hi new subscriber here. I was researching whether or not distilled water is better and found your channel. I do well in keeping my plants healthy and good looking with regular appropriate plant watering and fertilizing but have never flushed my plants. But what I have always done is place my plants outside during a rainy day, I realized that I’ve been flushing when I just wanted to give my plants a spa day or incorporate watering with rain water. My plants have been benefiting with my water conservation and spa treatment efforts in spite of my ignorance. Lol. Take care and thanks for sharing your knowledge.

Thanks for the helpful info! A baking cooling rack over the sink or a baking dish would be a great way to do multiple plants at once and allow the time for other fun plant stuff while they all drain.

Excellent video the one thing I would advise you to do is add enzymes to your water it would really remove the tough build up inside. You could use a tds meter to test your parts per million and see how much build you're actually removing. Once again great video and effort. 😉😊👍

I have a neon philodendron that is stunted and is now taking on a weird tint. The top of the soil has a white crust. I just fertilized it thinking that was the problem. Oops! 😬 NOW I know what the problem is and how to fix it! Thanks!!

Hey, would flushing my plants work to take off the chemicals like fertilizers on flowers? I want to make sure it's safe for my pet to eat

I use rain and boiled water on most of my plants here in the UK as I know I have hard water. Do I still need to flush them anyway?
@MyWastelessLife
@MyWastelessLife 4 жыл бұрын
If you use rain water probably not, but if you fertilize frequently you might want to flush when you think you need to, just to help get rid of excess nutrients. In reality I myself only flush right before growing season before I start fertilizing again. Flushing monthly seems excessive to me if I don't see any mineral deposits on my terra cotta or only if I overfertilized.

I just got a Pilea peperomioides as a gift a day ago and it has mineral deposit circles all over the under sides of the leaves. Should I flush this plant straight away once dry?

My monstera plant’s leaves are wilting/drooping. I think it’s from over-fertilization! Should I flush it with water now? Or wait until it’s dry? I’m worried that if I flush it now, it will be over watered because the soil is currently still wet from my latest watering/fertilizing. How can I revive my plant? :(
@MyWastelessLife
@MyWastelessLife 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah wait for the soil to dry before you do anything to it. Monstera deliciosas are very resilient. Do check for pests just to be sure it’s not because of that. Over fertilizing usually shows up as brown tips in leaves and build up in soil, not necessarily wilting (tho it can happen).

Hi I try to add cc as much as I can but since I transcribe my videos myself I can't get them up for all my videos on time. I'm so sorry there's isn't one for this yet, I do try to make my content as accessible to everyone as possible. But I do have an accompanying blog post to this video however, link is in the description. Hope that helps!
