After tireless research and talking to every expert I know who has his own boat!! Here it is the healthiest and cheapest way to FLUSH your outboard motor after running it in the saltwater. Anyone who wants their boat to last knows that outboard maintenance is paramount. In this video I show you the way that I think is the healthiest and most cost effective way out there. This project will take you a total of thirty minutes including the time it takes you to order the parts an amazon. The health of an engine is regulated upon maintenance and flushing the engine is a huge part of that IMO. When you return from a long day on the water you want things to be as easy as possible and here’s how. Enjoy the video if you have any questions please feel free to ask.

Not only does this flush your engine better, if you are tuning up your engine on mouse ears, you might find out that when you take your boat to the ramp and fire it up in the water, it won't run the same. You need to run your engine lower unit under water to get that back pressure on the thru hub exhaust.

I ended up buying Rydlyme descaler and a small pump to flush out my old Yamaha 60hp 2 stroke outboard. I dropped the lower unit of the engine, and hooked the output of the pump to the water intake tube of the engine. I also had to take the thermostate out, but it needed replaced anyway. You mix the Rydlyme in a 5 gal bucket with 1 gallon of water, and put the pump in the bucket. The water comes out of the pee valve into the bucket, and is then run back through the system by the pump. I ran it this was for a few hours. There was at least 1/2" of sludge on the bottom of the bucket when I was done. I could not believe how much crap came out of the engine. It is a little pricey to do it this way, but it works.

Darn good idea my friend. I may try this on my Yamaha 50 / 4 stroke. Just gonna have to measure the lower unit and bucket. Steve

Went to the second hand (recycle) yard got a used clean drum about 44Gal/170L for $10, cut the top 1/3 off with the disc grinder, there is no need to put the motor in gear so hung the garden hose over the side, run the F70 for 10 minutes. When finished take the hose off the faucet and drain (syphon) drum water into the garden or the storm water pit.

That's a PVC/plastic drum of 44Gal/170L.

One flaw is supplying the new water from the bottom. The weight of the water in the trash can is going to try to backfeed into the drinking water system. Need to supply fill water at top with air-gap between supply water and weir. A small amount of water can be drained from the bottom at the same rate as the make-up water. Also maybe remove the prop during this operation. Or cross your fingers with muffs. In any case, there's really no reason to run the motor for more than a few minutes to conduct tests or flush cooling system. Just my observation.

Great informative video...did you use any chemicals to flush the outboard motor...?

My dad and I flushed our engines with muffs and never had salt problems. The bucket will not do anything that muffs can't do as long as you're using the muffs properly.

What about a drain on the bottom instead. Then fill the can as usual ? Not sure but I've tried it with muffs and the can with no drain . Only problem is getting the motor to lift out and tipping the can over . Heavy . Do you put detergent in the can when you flush? I'm in brackish to salt water Thanks . Mercury 30hp

I’ve been looking for a large trashcan or some thing like a barrel to run my Yamaha F150 outboard and it needs about 26 inches from the front fin to the back and most of the garbage cans I find around 24 inches. Any advice appreciated. Thanks.

If the trash can won’t work I have seen other guys ,specifically guys with twin engines, use an old 500-100 gallon water box. They are used in agriculture I don’t know what they are called specifically but they are a plastic tote that has a metal cage around it.. maybe try that!!

10-20 min but that’s way overkill I just leave it running while I am cleaning the rest of the boat.

I’m picking up a used boat next week and started watching these video on flushing. I like your video but disagree with running the cool water thru the flushing process. I think the motor won’t get to temperature properly and the thermostats won’t open so water won’t properly flow thru the motor. The motor has to heat that water up so thermostats open otherwise water stuck on other side of thermostat doesn’t go anywhere, no? The bucket way is the way to go though because muffs create the same issue by constantly introducing cool water so it’s not a proper flush.
@jefmichel4027

A boat motor always runs in cool water. How do they ever warm up? It will be fine if you let it run for a few minutes (up to operating temp).

@@benjithebulldog5637 what sense does that make? The point is to flush the salt water out of the entire engine passages. The thermostat opens based on engine temp not ocean temp. Didn’t mean to offend you just asking you a question.
