I was about to take the Bushcat off my demo list. Someone else claimed it was “not as rugged” as other popular options. But this video made me out it right back on the list. It looks comfortable and fun to fly.
@bushcattom
@bushcattom Жыл бұрын
The BushCat is very very rugged. A strong sturdy frame with robust gear. It can handle off airport operations with ease. A long history in the African bush. Don’t listen to anyone who says it’s not as rugged as other options. Unless he’s including a Sherman tank in his options list. I would say yes, the BushCat is not as rugged as a tank. But tanks can’t take off or land in under 300ft. Tanks can’t climb 1000fpm. And tanks are not nearly as fun. Of course if you can shoot a tank cannon and blow something up I would grant you the tank has an edge on the BushCat on the fun meter. My suggestion is that you get a demo ride in a BushCat and put to rest all your reservations. Then take out your checkbook and do what must be done.

Remarkable plane. I particularly like the Rotax and I think you nailed it on the colors! What are your impressions after the first year? What expectations were exceeded and what fell short? Thoughts on the “fabric” covering and the sturdiness of the airframe and do you need to check the nuts and bolts occasionally to ensure airframe soundness? Are there any improvements since your purchase or upgrades you might recommend in hindsight? How many hours did you put on in your first year? It is a slow plane but do you do any x-country trips? Keep up the informative and entertaining videos and say hi to Bob. Are you planning your next plane yet?
@bushcattom
@bushcattom 2 жыл бұрын
Hi John, I love the Rotax too. Super dependable. Lots of power. With full fuel, two people, and baggage I’m still getting 600-700 rpm climb with less than 300ft takeoff roll. With single pilot and light I’ve been able to get it off the ground in 150ft with 1100 rpm climb. As for the colors I’m glad you like them. I agonized over that decision for weeks. So many options there. Fabric is extremely durable. Same stuff used for racing yacht sails. It can’t rip. Easy to fix punctures. Wears longer than most. No I don’t have to tighten bolts. A good preflight and annual is all that is needed. Very strong beefy frame. I may get custom leather seats put in someday but right now the seats are very comfy. I did have a set of extra wind vents to help with airflow when it’s really hot outside. Or I just fly with the doors off. Took possession in September 2020. The Hobbs meter is reading 260 hrs right now. Yes, my wife and I do cross country flying all the time. I don’t mind arriving 10 minutes later behind my friends. That just means more time in the air. The joy is in the journey. Thanks for watching.

That is true that unless I am doing long cross country ( which I rarely do ) I hardly ever use the autopilot in my plane - I love to fly the plane myself. Still the autopilot is an important safety device which can be life saving in case of VFR into IMC or similar accident ...so for me it was must-have, similar to BRS.
@bushcattom
@bushcattom 2 жыл бұрын
Well to each his own. I know there is one BushCat owner who is installing an autopilot and the manufacturer is keeping watch. I wonder what the price will be if Skyreach makes that an option someday. As far as safety is concerned I’m glad for the glass panel as well as my backup instrument which gives me artificial horizon among other key readings in case of inadvertent IMC.

The reason I ask is that I was a rotorwing instructor in the Army flying Apaches, and am planning to buy a bushcat/ get my FW rating and it would be really helpful if you did some flights with more MOI (Method Of Instruction) to share exactly what you're doing with your cross-check/flight controls during each phase of your manuevers. Great video, question for you, on your rear camera is appears the tail is shaking side to side, or is that just the camera doing that? I know I've seen my camera show video that looks like its wobbling if there is some vibration then clears up when the vibration goes away, could be what I am seeing in yours? thanks
@bushcattom
@bushcattom 2 жыл бұрын
Great question. What you’re seeing is a by product of my camera’ video stabilization. The rear camera gets a lot of vibration from the prop blast, the most pronounced vibration is during full power. At cruise it settles down a bit. The stabilization software creates the shaking effect on the surface mount or anything the camera is mounted to. You’ll notice the landscape is perfectly smooth. So it’s all in the camera. The BushCat Does Not shake like that. It just the camera trying to deal with that hefty prop blast vibration. Thanks for watching.

Great and informative video per sop. You have answered some questions that i had. First, the heavy control feel. Like you, i would much rather have that solid feeling. Makes for a much more professional ride. Item 2 was the heating. I hate cold! I was considering just aircraft s line up but when i saw there is no seal between inside the cockpit and the frigid outside air, this was a deal breaker. Now, granted it was cold, and i understand the need to save all the heat for the engine but, was somewhat disappointed that your breath was still visible with the cabin heat on. Is there a way to block some of the cooling air to the engine to produce more heat or is there a heater upgrade available. I am one of those lucky but rare spouses who has a wife constantly nagging, " when are you ordering your bushcat"? I would hate for her to be disappointed to be wearing a snowmobile suit to go flying. Anyway, thanks for another great video! I will be visiting the knolls presently. Btw, am I out of line to ask what is your profession? Wife and i are having bets on who gets it right! That's what life is like with 2 typa A personalities living under one roof. Thank you again

Good morning from Utah Bushcat Tom! We’re considering building a Bushcat this fall/winter. We currently own a Cessna 150, how would you compare flight handling characteristics between the 150 and the Bushcat?
@bushcattom
@bushcattom 2 жыл бұрын
Don’t “consider” building a BushCat-just pull the trigger and do it. You won’t regret that choice. The closest airplane I’ve flown in is the 172. So no experience with the 150. I know some have called the 150 a kite and it is a good stable airplane. But let me tell you about the BushCat...heavier stick makes for smooth and graceful maneuvers and the prospect of over-controlling is reduced. The BushCat can handle high winds with ease. Crosswinds are a breeze (no pun intended). The plane feels larger and heavier than it is. A real fun machine. Stalls are incredibly docile with no wing drop tendencies. Can land really slow. Take-off rolls in less than 300ft and that’s with two people and full fuel. You won’t get that STOL performance in a 150. Climbs like a rubber ball-1000 fpm easy. Very little rudder needed in turns. Trims out extremely well. Hands off flying during cross- country. Just a blast to fly. I’ve talked with several pilots who have flown all kinds of airplanes but they tell me that flying the BushCat is the most fun they’ve had.

Yes the fabric is extremely rugged and should last as much as any fabric covering. I'm told it should be fine way past a decade. Of course, provided you take care of it. Fabric planes should not be left outside. Keep it hangared, keep it clean and you'll get many many good years on it.

Gayle & I cruised a sailboat in the Caribbean for a few years. Most of the big charter cats were hoisting Trilam day in & day out. It lasted forever. Tough stuff. Plus, unlike most aircraft fabrics, Trilam is ripstop. You also have to think about the whole skin replacement & painting costs. Decades ago my daddy & I recovered our old Taylorcraft. It took months working part-time. And it was toxic. They don’t call it dope for nothing (I remember sitting in the grass with Dad after a day of doping fabric, sharing a cigar. I was 12. We were both a little out if it). There is a lot to be said for just lacing on a new color-fast skin.

“If you haven’t gotten one yet, you need to order one.” Speaking of which, our Bushcat just arrived at the Port of Baltimore Saturday. I’m so excited. We’re taking a few weeks off from Margaritaville Nord in Feb & headed down to Florida. While we’re down there I’ll fly with Aerosport South @ DeLand, to get my Bushcat checkout for insurance & pick up a fresh BFR. I’m still trying to figure out what I want to do about the Kanardia set-up. I really like your twin Nesis set-up. But since I’ve already got an Sentry ADS-B in receiver, I’m thinking I might mount a big screen iPad running ForeFlight on the right side. Then I could save a bit of cheddar by mounting the Aetos w/integrated engine unit left. That way I can plan on the iPad & keep the ForeFlight charts updated at home. Then on XCs I can just enter the next waypoint into the Aetos as each leg completes. Of course a full Trig stack with mode S & ads-b out. At MT Vernon I was so excited about the planes that I didn’t spend as much time as I now wish with the Kanardia displays. Anyway, great vid my friend. I hope you do more of the Bushcat how-tos. Best, Rick

I'm registering my BushCat as an Experimental so I can do a bit more of the maintenance & tinkering myself (there is even a 2-day class that expanded abilities and permissions in the Light Sport class). Airspace restrictions are mostly radio equipment based, not category based (which is why Tom has Mode S altitude reporting TRIG transponder, VHF transceiver, and ADS-B OUT with WAAS GPS). IFR restrictions are based on certified & tested panel equipment, not the airframe. In fact, there are quite a number of high-end experimental planes certified for hard IFR. As Tom mentioned, a sport pilot needs an instructor's endorsement (which implies the experience of flying into controlled airports with an instructor), but a private pilot has that dual pilot, controlled airspace experience built into the training. Sport pilots also have range limitations, lifted by an instructor's endorsement. A sport pilot's training is the same as a private pilot's training, just issued in stages instead all at once with a PPL.

I’ve flown in winds gusting to 40kts and had direct crosswinds of 25kts. The BushCat can handle such winds but you do need to have proper technique. Of all the types I have flown the BushCat bests them all in handling high winds.
