I honestly spent my first year flying with eachine vr d2 and I wouldn't go back and change that. I wasn't sure at the time if I was going to be getting into fpv as much as I am now. For $60 they did the job and got me addicted. Now I own HDOs. I still use the eachine box goggles to share the experience with others.

I think just about anyone getting started should begin with something like the eachine ev800 box goggles. Yea they are bulky but they are cheap and look good. Big screen and diversity for under $100. I have personally tried fat sharks and still prefer the box goggles. For me sitting in the front row gives me the best feeling of immersion. Plus i dont think recommending such expensive equipment to someone new is a good idea. If the barrier to entry is too high most ppl are just going to walk away. I think a lot of reviewers have gotten so used to the best (and often free) stuff they dont realize how much fun can be had on the cheap. My buddy got a wizard on sale, ev800 and a jumper radio. With a few batts he spent less than $300 all in and is having a blast. Will he upgrade later probably but if he was looking at spending a grand just to get started he probably wouldnt have tried.

Might I suggest a “Field Kit” episode. Having started FPV this year, I didn’t know what to bring with me at the beginning. Simple things like extra screws or a screw driver to tighten screws. I don’t know if you want to go as far as mobile chargers and portable soldering irons, but some basic things to keep you flying might be a good idea since we will probably crash a few times

I started in Feb '18 and deviated from Steele's recommendations a little bit with a 3" instead of a Whoop and with box goggles. A few months later I had HD3s and a Whoop. So yeah, the How To FPV series is wisdom that's worth following, even if you don't yet fully understand why it's wise.

I appreciate your unapologetic approach to offering advice. Sure, I may not agree with everything you've suggested, but I'm not the guy with years of applied experience and over 200,000 subscribers am I? The EV800D will always make a good companion set if you can afford it. When you start flying, your friends are going to want to see what you see, and since you can use them like goggles or a screen, it can be more entertaining for groups. That said I couldn’t agree more: if you can only afford 1 set, get a decent set. Thanks for the series Steele

My first pair of goggles was Eachine VR D2 Pro box. I always thought my camera was out of focus. Another thing I noticed is that when I was recording there was a quite noticeable lag in the video. I just got Fat Shark HDOs today based largely on your points of consideration and I'm so glad I did. I now understand that it was never my camera that was out of focus. No more lag while recording and I have much more confidence with my flying as I can see clearly. I regret wasting the $80 on the VRD2s in the first place. At least my kids can now ride along. Mr Steele has good advice if you know you're in it for the long haul. Thanks Mr Steele!

I've learned a lot with the 40$, but I've used my friends HD3'S and it made me into a better pilot. The resolution you get from fatsharks helped me see a lot i cannot see in my 40$ goggles. I learned a lot from this video. Thanks!

man, I tried skyzone and flysight goggles after having a box set that came with a crappy hubsan storm. after wasting money on the other sets, and having a hell of a time cause of latency, resolution and fov issues I found a set if hd3 with rapidfire reciever. now it's much better view, less likely to outfly the video and light weight. sure it was expensive and not the oled of the hd0 but I wanted larger fov and still high quality. it's seriously one of the most important investments for fpv

So wish I had this video when I started. When I started I bought a fly sky radio or whatever it is called. I ended up buying a new radio because it struggled to transmit far +it only had like one good compatible receiver(it was still trash). Also bought a cheap pear of Banggood goggles, they ended up being extremely hard to fly with. eventually I ended up buying a pair fat sharks. So I basically burned $200+ trying to save money. If you know you are going to love this hobby GO FOR THE BEST you will ends up loosing money trying to save it trust me.

I bought a taranis, trained over a hundred hours in the sim, bought a whoop as you suggested, and box googles (eachine ev800d) because at the end of the day I feel I'm still gonna use them because they can transform into a monitor (already modded my taranis to hold the monitor). I disagree with box goggles. I think they are a great entry point and it doesnt come with the financial burden associated with fat sharks. Sure box goggles are uglier and clunky but they offer a great started experience. Specifically the Eachine Ev800D. If you upgrade from those goggles, you now have a spare screen you can take with you to share with others. Plus their $300 less than new fatsharks. There are a lot of great ways to start fpv aside from his recommendations that are also budget friendly. Now I will admit the frsky is definitely a good way to go and well worth the price over flysky. Aside from that there are so many options with whoops and now brushless micros that will last so much longer. Overall I dont regret any of my budget purchases. I'll admit there are better quality things but if you have a hard budget there are other options

I jumped in with HD2's, partly because I'd seen you (Steele) fly with them, I figured with your flying competence you've been flying quads for a while and had tried various sets on the market, eventually settling on the HD2's. I'm still rocking mine today, 2 years on :) But now with a black HDO faceplate+strap because my fan+foam+strap all wore out.

I gotta say your right. Going the cheap way is the most expensive way in the long run. When i first started, metally i was going the cheapest way, i bought 40$ goggles.they were ok but not cutting it, i went and bought a screen that was 60$, didnt cut it, i got some cheap 100$ box goggles, they worked ok but really heavy bulky and not enjoyable. I have now spent 200 some dollars. I have now bought the skyzone sky02. Im loving it and it was 269$. I could have soent the 269 the first time instead of what i did spending 469 going the cheap way. So really its the longer expensive way that is just not worth it. Get the good stuff first, youll have a good experience.

In the beginning I knew goggles were the one piece of equipment I won't change all that often so I opted for FatSharks (the Dominator HD so you can tell it was quite some time ago). My only experience before with goggles of any kind was the VR1 (some of you might remember those 20+ years old piece :D) and I knew I wanted something at least better than those were. So I collected some money, waited for the Dominator HDs to be available and I bought them for like $900 in the days. I was pretty happy with them for quite a while. I mean I could watch real 3D videos on them, they had 60-something degrees field of view but ultimately the real disappointment came from the size of the screen. I mean c'mon: is that really what you would call "an immersive experience"??? The screen was blurry as hell on the edges (even the -2 correction lenses didn't do much to solve that), small and with a diversity receiver the battery was done in a matter of 60-70 minutes tops. Then, a few longer years after, I have discovered the EV800's. I bought them as spares for my son to follow along. Didn't use them even once! Then there was that day when I forgot the FatSharks and only had the big nasty EV800 in my car. I hated them for the size and literally didn't have then on since day one. But man.... when I put them on the screen was... O MY GOD!!! BIG ASS doesn't even begin to describe it! And sharp edge to edge!!!! Later on I found out that the best receiver I have had at that time was not even close when it came to sensitivity compared to the EV800s and so the good old FatSharks are now sitting on the shelf rusting. I personally will never buy anything else as those fit my face perfectly, give me the big-ass screen that I always wanted, sharp image top-to-bottom and left-to-right and with the 800D's DVR (which with all due respect to FatSharks does finally do a good job in recording the feed unlike the FatShark's DVR which is in my opinion a piece of crap) I finally have goggles I can rely on in my FPV adventures. To bottom line it: I have no fucking idea why people are so amazed by the fatshark goggles. In FPV you rearly (if ever) use the (amazing!!!) Trinity head tracker (awesome piece of engineering btw!!!), you get a small, blurry screen for a price that one could buy not one but at least 4 pairs of EV800Ds. Not to mention (as someone here already pointed out) that you can take them apart and you have a fully functional 5" monitor! For me, personally, the EV800D is the top of the notch product on the markey Today for more reasons that I can count.

Gonna have to disagree about the V3. If you do get the Dominator V3, get a 16:9 camera like the Eagle. You don't lose any vertical resolution and your view wont be stretched from 4:3 to 16:9 which looks weird. Plus side is your view is more in line with what your eyes would see.
@Gosuminer
@Gosuminer 5 жыл бұрын
Most discussions about aspect ratio are missing the point. What you want is a large enough vertical field of view in the goggles as well as in the camera so you can see where you going in vertical maneuvers. There are different ways to achieve that (including 16:9 cameras and goggles).

I also have dom v3's and they do not stretch the picture, and also most cameras do 16:9 and 4:3. And I never changed any camera settings and I use the runcam swift 2. So don't be worried about the dominator V3's they are pretty cheap and are as much quality as HD3's.

ummm the dominator V3 just sucks in image quality, I tried the HDO once and I couldn't go back, same goes for all the other HD goggles. All I let my V3 do now is be simulator goggles, bc the dominator HD series are just too good.

When I started fpv a big disapointment for me was that the goggles were not very immersive at all. I expected it to be like being virtual reality but in fact it is more like watching a tv from a far in the dark... Now I am used to it, but the first time I was really disapointed. Just to let you know what to expect. Great video!

The FPV hobby is AN INVESTMENT, and you need to think about it in "Cost per flight" not "cost per equipment". If you buy things that will last you forever, like a Chameleon frame with life time warranty, or the full-size Crossfire TX, or dominator HD3 goggles and the Taranis, the overall monetary cost of your setup might be higher, but the cost per flight is extremely low because the amount of flights and overtime that they can support you is super high. And they will not only outperform the Banggood bullshit, but the second you need upgrade from Banggood you essentially wasted your money on stuff that you will never touch again with the OG route leaving you in the dust in terms of cost effectiveness. Also, take into consideration that COST just means resources you spent--that includes not only your money, but also your mentality, and your time. If you invest in 5000 dollars, getting two KISS V2 Steele Aliens, HD3, X9D with crossfire, ISDT charger, a bunch of thunderpower batteries, quality workstation, with multiple gopros and SD cards--everything just works and so robust that the cost of your time and your "happiness" (I guess?) in building repairing troubleshooting is minimal, and that cost per flight will be significantly less in the long run with the quality route. Steele is not "wrong" on his way of getting into FPV--it is totally justified and will give people the best FPV experience in the long term. By the way when you say you only have whatever amount of budget--think again, is it how much "you can actually spend?" or is it how much "you are willing to spend?"--there are a lot of stuff that you spend money on that you don't need at all and you can pull those saved money into helping you get the FPV quality stuff "it is not that hard"--Chad Nowak. Get yourself to spend a little more, and get the quality stuff, period.

Listen to this guy. I have friends who got into this hobby who went for stuff like cheaper goggles. Same thing always happens, they upgraded later to the fatsharks and in the end spent more than if they just bought them in the first place. Fatsharks in particular are well worth the extra $ Same pretty much applies to the other good gear out there, taranis etc. There's a reason the pros use this stuff, it's the best out there and the difference is huge.

Dear Mr. Steel, thank you for mentioning spending a little more for goggles and I completely agree with literally everything you stated. I learned the hard way. I went cheap and listened to my UAVFuture friend and his choice of goggles and got aomway v1 commanders. Soon, I realized this was a mistake and bought a pair of fat shark hdo’s. The someways were $250 and it wasn’t worth it. I recommend spending the money on fat sharks and also I still recommend people don’t buy a Qx7.. but instead spend more and buy x9d plus from Taranis. It made my life easy when I wanted to upgrade to crossfire micro and was plug and play. I’d recommend the HDO’s for rapidfire plug and play $$$$ 💰 💴 💵 .

I have to say that the Fat Shark Transformers have been really good to me. Yes, they are box googles, not extremely bulky though. They have a fantastic screen with superior FOV, you can get either the “Full screen” or “Binocular” holders, where the former is more like a traditional boc, and the second behaves more like “real” FPV googles. They have a decent receiver built in with antenna diversity. I just recently got a pair of dominators and I still prefer some aspects of the Transformers, the major positive of the dominators are the sleekness and the receiver bay. The Transformers also works pretty ok for those who need glasses. And, at the end ofmthe day, when you get something different you still have a nice 5” monitor with built in receiver that can be really useful. I’d also say that rather than the Boscam, I’d recommend something different. There are 7” monitors with diversity receiver and DVR and even a sun screen on Banggood for under $100 which should be a great option for those who want to fly with a screen. It has to be acknowledged that dominators really are prohibitively expensive, especially when you realize that even after buying the most exoensive googles on the market you still need a receiver to make them useable

If you're a cheap and resourceful type, the fatshark 18650 battery holder runs two 18650 batteries. You can either use vape or reclaimed laptop batteries for good reliable power and 18650s run longer than lipos. BTW I got a set of Recon v2s and run them with a caddx eos2 on my 5", and its way better than I was expecting.

Max ipd and frame confort was an issue on fatshark for me, I have tried most main models to check the image size and quality. There was not too much I did not like, but my ipd is 70mm and they don't do that, so they are not useable. Also the frame is not very comfortable on my head. Aomway felt much better and have a 69mm max (real) ipd so it's not bad. I settled for the ev200d which are very comfortable on my face (everyone is different, some friends don't feel the same way) and have the proper ipd for me. Haa Also on fatshark I really find that the battery on the side is very uncomfortable compared to goggles with battery on the back
