How to Frame a Stretched Canvas in a Regular Frame - Art DIY

In this video learn how to remove a stretched canvas from its wooden support bars and then place it in a regular frame used for photos or posters.
This type of framing also works if you are painting on a canvas roll. The loose canvas can just be placed in the frame without having to go through the process of removing it from the wooden support bars.
If you are using a different type of stretched canvas that doesn't have staples on the back, you could just cut it right off the support bars using an Exacto knife or something similar and then trim accordingly after.
You will need:
-pliers
-flat screwdriver
-scissors
-painter's tape (optional)
-frame
-painting

Gotta say it looks very easy how you did it. I wanna make a canvas and none of the shops make it with black frame, just on wood frame. I also want white edges on the painting as its black and white, figured to let the edges white and then put it in a black regular frame. Dunno if I should do it or just leave it without white edges and on the wooden frame. This video makes it look so simple.

Thank you sooooooooooooooo much. I purchase a lot of canvas art and getting it framed, can be quite expensive. Just picked up some beautiful replicas on canvas of a famous painter of Japanese Samarai. The cost to get the pictures framed would exceed $1200. Now my cost is...........$50. Thanks

Hiya thanks for this useful and straightforward video. I have a question. If I remove the canvas from the frame that originally stretched it as I want to reframe it like you just showed, will the canvas “unstretch” overtime and ruin the painting eg by shrinking it? Or am I being dramatic? 🤭😅

I still have the painting that I did this to and over the past two years there hasn't been any shrinking or deforming. Maybe over more time there could be but so far it's been good!

Did the wooden part of the frame which you taped the canvas onto come with the outside frame part? also did you get this stuff from like a picture frame store or something?

Yes it was just the piece in the back of the frame. I just got the frame from my local art store. Everything else I already had on hand. Just painters tape (can be picked up at a hardware or any department store), a flathead screwdriver, and some scissors!

love the video! just a quick question tho, is it recommended to add the transparent protection layer on top of the painting that comes with the picture frame or would it be damaging the painting?

Personally, I think it is best to leave it off. You can see the texture of the painting better and there is chance of moisture getting in between and getting trapped!

Without is better unless you can have space between the art and the glass. With paintings that have the paint texture sticking off, it is better not to have it touching glass as far as I know.

What was the size of the frame and the canvas of the painting?

I'm unsure exactly what you mean. This just shows how to cut the canvas off the stretcher bars so it can be framed in a regular photo frame.

@@traceyretchford7603 You don't need glass in the frame. They don't suggest glass if your painting is very textured, otherwise the ridges and brush strokes can be deformed by glass pressing against it. If it is a flat painting, then glass isn't a big issue.
