Thanks for the tip on using 3-in-one oil. Just brought back an old Miller indicator with a lot less trouble than I expected.

It’s what I use on most my instruments and seems to work well

The two products I swear by to free things up are Kroil and Break Free CLP. Followed by Starrett instrument oil for lubrication.

I dont understand why you didnt take the back off to get at the shaft more. My shaft had a touch of rust on it and it required me to actually use some very fine sandpaper to the shaft to get it freed up.

Very good point and it’s a thing to check for sure. I made a video at the same time where I did a disassemble and clean so I wanted to put that footage into that but ended up losing that video. I plan on making one again where I completely tear on down like a watch just haven’t come across anyone’s that need it yet

@@smalltownmachineshop6860 thanks ! Yea, we all need help ! Anyway, it's now going together with me using lps2 for lube. Applied with a needle.

I appreciate your video! I had a stuck and I mean "won't budge" stuck spindle in an outside micrometer. I tried everything except penetrating oil. Bam! Loose...

3 in 1 will get gummy over time. Too heavy actually. That is not so evident when you apply it either.

I find this, too. It has a solvent that evaporates, plus the oil probably isn't high quality. Clock oil is better, a small bottle isn't dear, and will last you a lifetime. I was taught never to lubricate indicators. A small drop on micrometer threads is sufficient.

I was intrigued until I saw him rapidly bouncing the indicator stem in and out. That is a real good way to knock the pointer loose or damage the inner workings. Ignorance I suppose.
